that a train derailed near Havre, I
thought- yeah that news happened
over the weekend. Oh no, this is
ANOTHER train derailment near
Havre.
Over the weekend, national
news outlets picked up the story
about a freight train that derailed
near Havre.

shortly after 3 p.m. with this:

Team Lindsay Breaks Through in Sidney
It was another great day on the
Yellowstone River for the Annual
Monster Cat Roundup! This year
provided more unique challenges
for the 37 teams in attendance. It
happened to be the 3rd highest river
levels in the 15-year history of the
event as the streamflow hovered at
30,000 cubic feet per second. Only
the inaugural year and the flood
year of 2011, provided higher water.
Our recent cooler summer temps
also kept the water temperature
nearly 8 degrees cooler than the
tournament average. Despite
those obvious differences, fishing
still proved to be quite difficult for
much of the field.
One team stood above all
others, however, as the father-
son duo of Todd Lindsay, Laurel,
MT., and JJ Lindsay, Billings, MT.,

Reds season comes to an end

The 2023 American Legion baseball season
has come to an end for the Glasgow Reds. The
Reds dropped two straight games at the Eastern A
Divisional Tournament at Denton Field in Miles
City.
Glasgow (11-24) lost both games by identical
scores of 11-1 to Miles City on Thursday and Laurel
on Saturday.
In the loss to Miles City, the Reds scored the
lone run in the third inning when JT Sprague
doubled to right-center field to score Juliun
Benson, who reached when he was hit by a pitch.
Miles City scored six runs in the second inning
and added one in the third and fourth and three in
the bottom of the fifth inning. Logan Muri’s walk
off single scored two runs to end the game on the
10-run mercy rule. CJ Lang led off with a hit and
scored on a passed ball.
Mavericks pitcher Garrett Waterman allowed
only two hits in the contest. He put down eight
Reds on strike outs.
Sprague had the only hits for the Reds, going 2
for 3 with the double.
Mason Hunter went one and a third inning on
the mound in taking the loss. Cash Stulc finished
the game on the hill. The two gave up 11 hits.
With the Reds having the day off on Friday,
Saturday Laurel — upset in their second game on
Friday —jumped on the Reds early, scoring a run in
the first inning, six in the second.three in the third
and one in the fourth. Glasgow scored its only run
in the top of the fifth on Sprague’s sacrifice fly to

Rance Rhoads had a good outing on the hill, but
his defense didn’t back him up. Laurel had five
infield hits that scored runs. Offensively, the Reds
had three hits with Jordan Plummer, Beau Malnaa,
and Benson each getting a hit.
Laurel’s defense was on as the Dodgers
outfielders robbed Sprague of a home run in the
third inning. Sprague’s hit was clearly sailing over
the fence, but the outfielder climbed the ladder to
make the catch. Tatum Hansen was also robbed of
a hit in the game.
The teams had to brave the heat as at game time it
was 83 degrees. The temperature soared over 100
over the weekend.
Laurel (36-18) went on the win the
championship, Defeating the Billings Blue Jays 9-4
on Sunday. The Dodgers had to win four straight
games after losing in an upset to the Billings
Cardinals 8-7 Friday. The Dodgers knocked off
Glasgow, Glendive 7-3 Saturday and the Cardinals
8-6 on Sunday.
The Glacier Twins won the west title with an
11-10 win over Mission Valley. Belgrade Bandits
came back to win the south with a 5-4 win over
Butte. Havre won the north with an 8-2 win over
Lethbridge.
The Dodgers are the host team of the state
tournament that starts Wednesday. Glacier (27-9)
takes on Butte (31-16) at 10 a.m., Belgrade (27-9)
plays Mission Valley (24-15) at 1 p.m., Havre (43-
16-1) plays Billings Blue Jays (46-9 ) at 4 p.m/ and
Laurel tackles Lethbridge (39-10) at 7 p.m.

work’. By now it was too late to head for the hills so I
went home to contemplate my impending fortunes.
Next morning Cole came by and off we went, he
in his GMC, me in my Dodge Ram Tough. He with his
Husquevarna, me with my Mac 10-10.
With the temperature hovering at about 15 degrees
below ugly we drove up Badger Creek and arrived at
the wood cutting place about day light. (I knew it was
very cold ‘cause before I left the house I had put a pot of
boiling water on the back porch and when it froze the
ice was still warm).

But I digress.
Cole got started cutting and I fired up my saw to let
it warm up a tad bit as I headed off in search of the prefect
firewood. I found a good tree and began cutting but in
about five minutes the saw lost all power and wouldn’t
cut hot butter. It just sat there putt putting away at an idle.
No amount of coaxing would bring “her” back to life.
I helped Cole finish loading his wood, clambered
into my pickup with my broke chain saw and eleven
sticks of firewood and headed to town for a meeting with
Fox.
I entered his shop, put the offending chain saw on
his counter and said to him, “Mr. Fox, there is something
wrong with this saw”. He said, “There’s nothing wrong
with that saw sonny”. He took it into the work room again,
adjusted the carb and other stuff again, went outside
again, cut the rotten cottonwood again and pronounced
“her” ready to work. (Again)
If you are wondering what all this has to do with
arrowheads stay tuned. You’re about to learn something.
Next morning at about o’dark-thirty we headed back
out to make our fortunes. Cole had a good start on his
but mine was lagging a bit.
But...it was deje vous all over again. After cutting
a few minutes the saw lost power. Putt...puttputt...putt..
pu....p....
I yelled over to Cole “It’s every man for himself. I’m
going to see Fox...Now” and I slammed the saw down
into the pickup bed, slammed the tranny in ‘go forward’
and steamed off to town.
I headed straight to Mr. Fox’s shop, walked in, put
the saw on the counter and said “Fox, there is something
wrong with this saw”.
He took the saw to the back room where he fumbled
with the frieterzam, tweaked the tumplegig and aggretated
the agonizer. He made the trek to the cottonwood stump,
cut the rotten log and said “See there? ‘She’ works just
fine”.
Next day, same tune different chorus. When the saw
went kaput I threw it against a big rock. The handle sort’a
came loose but the saw kept running. Puttputt...putt....
puttputt...pu....putt.
(I’m getting to the arrowhead part. Stay calm. I’m
old...and fat.)
Now, I’m sure this demonic piece of...machinery is
simply taunting me with its putt putt. So very calmly I
picked it up and smashed it into the rock again. Still it
kept up with the putt...putt. By now the chain had come
off and was just hanging there so I grabbed the saw by the
blade and smashed it against a tree several or more times
causing considerable damage to both saw and tree.
Still with the putt...puttt.
I picked it up and this time I threw it about fifty yards
or so where it slammed into a boulder and bounced off a
tree. It quit running. See, the gas tank was laying about 30
yards from the saw so that explained the sudden silence.
(Here it comes now. Wait for it. Wait for it).
I went to retrieve what remained of the Mac 10-10
and as I stooped down to pick it up there was this ‘thing’
lying right under the broken saw.
I had found my very first arrowhead and it was
beautiful.
Upon returning to town I stopped by the chain saw
shop taking my saw inside with me. Fox came out from
the back room just as I set the pieces of the saw on his
counter. I didn’t hem nor haw and without hesitation
I said, simply “Fox, I believe there is something wrong
with this saw”.
He answered, just as simply, “I do believe you’re
right”.
The Mac 10-10 people finally figured it was a
slightly oversized piston that when it got hot it swelled up
causing the loss of power. They offered a full cash rebate
or another saw, my choice. I suppose you can guess what
option I opted for.
But I had found my arrowhead and I was happy. I
dread telling this tale though as I have nightmares about
waking up at the crack of noon someday only to find the
DEA, FBI, BIA, FWP, BLM, and the National Society
to Preserve Arrowheads at my teepee flap demanding
my immediate arrest and incarceration for the wanton
thievery and destruction of arrowheads.
Boys, I didn’t destroy the arrowhead. I destroyed the
saw.
