INTRODUCTION
Everyone has their preference and opinion on whether women should wear
makeup. But the question remains, is wearing makeup a bad thing? Some people
believe that wearing makeup is a good thing. They think that makeup can empower
women and help them feel confident like they can take on anything in the world.
They say that it does not matter if it is natural or not because there are so many
different types of makeup to choose from these days, you can find one that
matches any type of look you want to go for! Others disagree with this idea and
say that wearing makeup is not empowering at all because it is all about covering
up something instead of portraying your true self. So, do women have to wear
makeup? To clarify this issue, we would like to choose question 4 as our group
exercise: “Should women wear makeup?”.

CONTENT
1. Overview:
What is makeup? Marc Jacobs once said: “Makeup is the finishing touch, the
final accessory”. And according to the Cambridge dictionary, makeup (nouns)
means colored substances used on your face to improve or change your
appearance. Makeup is divided into two main categories, which are personal
makeup and professional makeup.
Personal makeup is usually quite simple, to use it in everyday life such as
going to school, going to work, small events, meetings, going out, etc. Most of this
make-up is usually gentle, with little emphasis. So, anyone can do it.
As for Professional makeup, this is a more complex type of makeup,
requiring a highly skilled Makeup Artist with a lot of experience to create complex
makeup styles with clear highlights in each different style. This type of makeup is
often suitable for important events such as weddings, engagements, parties,
festivals, or stage performances, etc. In addition to the two popular types of
makeup above, in the makeup industry, there are also advanced makeup, bridal
makeup, bridal hair… and other types of makeup.

The makeup process includes steps: primer, color correcting, concealer,
foundation, blush, contour, bronzer, highlighter, eyebrows, eyeshadow and
eyeliner, mascara, lips, and then setting spray or powder. However, each face has
its characteristics, has its advantages, and disadvantages, or it may depend on each
person’s preferences or a few other reasons, each person chooses for themselves
the
appropriate makeup steps, not necessarily doing all the steps.
Makeup plays an increasingly important role in our lives. Imagine you walk
out into the street with unsatisfactory beauty, you will surely be very self-
deprecating, which will affect your relationships and work. Currently, there are
many different makeup styles such as Thai style, Chinese style, American style,
etc. Each person will have different preferences, views, and approaches. So, keep
up to date with seasonal makeup trends, current makeup trends, and choose a
makeup style that suits you and your personality to make you more confident and
beautiful. People often say: “There are no ugly women, only women who don’t
know how to be beautiful”.

2. Current status and history begin:

The percentage of women wearing
makeup is increasing day by day. So how
does that specific situation happen?
First, according to a survey, up to
48% of women make up more than once a
week. 50% took less than 10 minutes, 86%

4
2
took less than 20 minutes to put on makeup. The percentage of people who like
makeup is quite high, with 64% saying “very much” or “like”. Teenagers often
refer

5
3
to information on YouTube the most, while friends are the most important source
of information for people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s.
A recent survey of 500 women
aged 16-39 in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh,
and other provinces found that
Vietnamese women use and spend
more on make-up products, on average.
On average they pay 300,000VND per
month for makeup. Skincare makes up a high percentage of the beauty product
category, with two-thirds of respondents saying they use it at least once a week.
Lipstick is not inferior, up to 88% of people surveyed, and most of them said they
use lipstick whenever they leave the house.
Looking back in the past, makeup appeared very early. 3000-1000 years BC
In Asia, the Chinese and Japanese have known to use rice flour for whitening.
Shave your eyebrows, paint your teeth yellow or black, use henna hair dye. Henna
is also a material used by Indians to decorate the body and to dye hair. In the 100s
of AD, in Europe, people made acne cream by applying barley flour and butter.
Mud baths to beautify the skin also began to be popular at this stage. The 19th
century was the period when beauty salons began to appear. At the end of this
century, eyeshadows and eyeliners began to become popular.
Back to the present but ignore the numbers, based on reality. So, when you
are walking down the street, is it hard to see a woman using cosmetics? Whether it
is simply lipstick, sunscreen, or even some blush. Or a simpler question, are there
many modern women around us who go out all day with a completely natural face
without any cosmetics? For us, the answer is no, it is very little.
So why do so many women wear makeup? The first thing, makeup, and
dressing contribute to the appearance of a modern woman. Secondly, many people
look to makeup as a way to protect their skin when going out, for example,
sunscreen can brighten their skin tone but also protects their skin from the harmful

6
3
effects of sunlight, it can even be the light emitted from electronic devices such as
phones or

7
4
laptops… Thirdly, makeup will help women cover up their flaws, build
confidence, and make a good impression with the people woman come into contact
with at first sight. Therefore, today’s women have enough knowledge to do things
that both help them feel confident and protect them from the harmful effects of the
environment.

3. Express point of view:

Makeup may be a divisive subject. People have strong opinions on what
makeup is “appropriate”, “too bold”, and “insufficient”. People even debate
whether wearing makeup is a good idea. According to a poll, the number of people
who support and oppose makeup is equal.
So, what is the deal with makeup? Is it good or bad? Should women wear
makeup? We are completely neutral on that.
However, there is one point on which we disagree: The requirement that
“Women must wear makeup”. We are so used to seeing women with immaculate
makeup that when one appears on the TV without any, it makes headlines. The fact
that female employees must wear makeup to work is part of their dress code, and
the corporation has a similar policy in many departments. In today’s culture,
however, the assumption that “women have to wear makeup” has caused many
women to feel self-conscious about not wearing makeup. Sure, makeup makes us
appear better than we do without it, but we never want to wear it all the time.
Makeup, like everything else, has benefits and drawbacks. We have probably
heard about the dangers of makeup, such as the fact that in the 400 lipsticks
examined, the average lead concentration was 1.11ppm, with findings ranging
from a detection limit of 0.026ppm to 7.19ppm1, or the fact that mascara tubes
should be thrown away after three months because harmful bacteria such as
Streptococcus and other fungi have been found in them… Nevertheless, our team
believes that makeup has more advantages than downsides.

First, makeup makes women more feminine. Dr. Richard Russell2 conducted
research that revealed that contrast is most essential on a woman’s face. He
assembled a collage comprising parts
of a man’s and a woman’s faces,
then boosted the contrast on one of
them. Consequently, most of the
participants thought the face with
less contrast was male and the one
with more contrast was female even though they had the same eyes, nose, and
mouth.
Second, just because a woman wears makeup, does not mean she is ugly.
Women put on makeup in the morning and take it off at night for the simple reason
that it makes them feel better. Makeup is used to enhance their natural beauty
rather than hide imperfections. It can improve a woman’s confidence, allowing her
to express herself in public without fear. The issue is not that women use “too
much” cosmetics, it is that they still believe makeup is about covering up flaws.
Third, makeup can help women concentrate and be more creative. What is it
like to apply eyeliner? It involves a lot of patience and perseverance. They must
not give up until they reach the goal, and they must not give up if they accidentally
draw a bad eyeliner. Simultaneously, makeup can boost women’s artistic cells,
allowing them to see more art in their daily lives. It is difficult for them not to have
artistic creativity on their faces every day. Women can create a variety of looks.
Fourth, makeup helps women look younger and fuller with a bright and
babyface. There is no doubt that glossy makeup, exfoliating dead skin before
putting on lipstick, using blush cream… are all methods to make women’s faces
look younger. According to Gina Brooke, the makeup artist for “Pop Queen”
Madonna, women’s skin becomes drier as they age. As a result, a primer is a useful

Dr. Richard Russell is an associate professor of psychology at Gettysburg University. Accordingly, “Women tend
to be naturally darker around their eyes and mouths than men of the same skin tone. When women use cosmetics to
darken the eyes and lips, they are exaggerating this sex difference to make the face appear more feminine,” explains
Dr. Richard Russell.

the brows, on the tops of the cheekbones, and the chin following Korean face
makeup can provide the illusion of tighter, younger skin.

4. Rating:
Finally, wearing makeup offers both benefits and drawbacks, with the
benefits outweighing the drawbacks. We are all girls, so we are still advocating
for women to feel comfortable wearing makeup. There are still certain
misunderstandings nowadays, such as women using makeup only to attract men,
but as people can see nowadays, makeup allows women to stand out, shine, and be
confident. It is not simply for the benefit of others to see. People must consider
their face shape when applying makeup to select a suitable makeup style.
However, do not forget to select the appropriate foundation; do not select a
foundation that is too high for your skin tone; then, it will appear unnatural. After
that, add powder to ensure that the foundation lasts longer and that sweat does not
wash it away. For longer-lasting makeup and healthy shine, use the extra mineral
spray after applying it. Also, use lip balm before applying lipstick because it not
only softens the lips but also makes them look shiny.
Even though makeup is extremely nice, some girls overuse it nowadays. They
put too much makeup, and when they take it off, the people around them have no
idea who they are. Or some people know cosmetics but do not take excellent care
of their skin, causing it to deteriorate, forcing them to spend money to return their
skin to its natural state. Some people, for example, do not clean their makeup
brushes, use expired makeup without realizing it, or leave makeup on overnight, all
of which are harmful to the skin. However, some females have not thoroughly
examined their skin, believe in advertising, and consequently, purchase low-quality
cosmetics and lose money. After each layer of makeup, the skin must be
meticulously cared after.
Everyone should first wash their hands and avoid touching their faces with
dirty hands. They should next use makeup remover or makeup remover, followed

11
6
by cleanser and toner. To maintain attractive skin, exfoliate once a week and apply
masks, lotions, and other products.

12
7
As a result, before applying makeup, it is vital to learn as much as possible
about one’s skin and to purchase well-known cosmetic products with skin-friendly
elements. Similarly, women should also avoid overusing cosmetics and only use
them when essential, such as while out with friends, boyfriends, or attending a
party. Wearing too much makeup might lead to other skin problems such as acne.
So, girls need to know when to apply cosmetics, when not to, and how to make
themselves seem attractive in a fair way!

CONCLUSION
To summarize, this essay is not intended to answer a specific question
“Whether women should wear makeup or not?”, or “How much makeup they
should wear?”. Every female has the right to do whatever she wants as long as she
wears appropriate makeup. Every woman has the right to improve her appearance
and doing so encourages them to love themselves more every day. However, it is
necessary to pay attention to cosmetics, such as how to choose makeup and how to
apply makeup to suit your style and personality, so as not to be bound by a pattern.

Thank you for reading!
