Questions for activity one (1)- Syrup and Water

1) What happened to the water after the syrup was added?
2) What process do you think is responsible for this?
Activity two (2)
1)What is the main difference between the pea in salt water (labelled A)
versus that in dilute water (B)?
2) What do you think is reason behind your observation?
3)Do you know the name of the process that took place?

What is Diffusion?

11
Jens Martensson
DEFINITION OF DIFFUSION

Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a region of

higher concentration to a region of lower concentration
until they reach equilibrium.
In other words, diffusion is the process by which particles
spread from a region where there are many to a region
where there are few, until they are evenly distributed.

Evidence 2- Osmosis

Osmosis
Osmosis is a process by which the molecules of a solvent pass
from a solution of low concentration to a solution of high
concentration through a semi-permeable membrane. For
example, if a freshwater or saltwater fish is placed in the water
with different salt concentrations, the fish dies due to the entry or
exit of water in the cells of the fish.

DIFFUSION and Osmosis IN THE

HUMAN BODY, Let us discuss!!

18
Jens Martensson
IMPORTANCE OF DIFFUSION IN THE
BODY

• It
promotes cellular respiration – In order for cells to survive, they
need oxygen. Oxygen moves from areas of high concentration to low
concentration, allowing the cell to respirate.
• Balances the pressure inside and outside cells.

1.Scientists believe that matter is particulate in nature. State what this means and include
four components of the theory. (4 marks)
2. Anna went to visit her friend next door her home and could immediately tell what her
friends’ mother was cooking. This is likely possible because of which process? (1 mrk)
A) Define the named process above. (1 mrk)
3. Explain what happens in terms of particles when potassium permanganate (VII) crystals
are placed in water. (2 marks)
4. Define the term osmosis. (1 mrk)
5. Slugs, which are garden pests need to keep themselves moist in order to prevent
dehydration and subsequently death. Use this principle to explain why table salt (sodium
chloride), sprinkled on slugs can cause them to die. (2mrks)
