INTRODUCTION

Society is increasingly developing and progressing, in addition to essential

needs such as eating well and dressing well, people's need for entertainment is
also increasing. To meet the growing need for entertainment, the birth of the social
network Facebook is one of the factors contributing to meeting that need.
Facebook social network brings many benefits to users so it has attracted a large
number of users. Besides bringing positive values, Facebook also brings many
challenges. Therefore, our group chose the research topic "Positive and negative
sides of Facebook", thereby offering solutions to promote the values and limit the
harm that Facebook brings.

BODY
I. INTRODUCING FACEBOOK
Facebook is a large and widely popular online social network worldwide. It
was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz,
and Chris Hughes, all of whom were students at Harvard University 1. The social
network was originally known as "Facebook" but its name was changed to
"Facebook" in August 2005. With almost 3 billion users as of 2021, Facebook has
grown to become the largest social network in the world. Roughly half of these
users regularly use Facebook.
The main objectives of Facebook are to establish communities and link
individuals within those communities. Users can register for a free account to use
Facebook. Furthermore, the platform offers many features and applications.
Specifically, Facebook helps users easily connect with friends and family by
sharing emotions, information, images, joining groups, and more. Additionally,
users can express their opinions by updating their status, commenting, or
messaging. Currently, Facebook has expanded its features, especially allowing
users to participate in business activities. As a result, it serves as a crucial platform

for communication, marketing, and business. Facebook can be used by both
businesses and individuals to develop their brands, engage with customers, and
advertise their goods and services.
In Vietnam, Facebook has also seen significant growth. According to
statistics as of June 2021 from Napoleon Cat (a social network measurement tool),
the total number of Facebook users in Vietnam is nearly 76 million, accounting
for over 70% of the country's population. This is an increase of 31 million users
compared to 2019, and Facebook still tops the list of popular social networks in
Vietnam.2 Facebook users in Vietnam span many different ages, from young to
middle-aged, of which a significant number are teenagers. The frequency of
Facebook use varies from person to person, including several times a week,
several times a day, or even several times an hour. It seems that Facebook has
become an indispensable part of Vietnamese society.
II. ADVANTAGES OF FACEBOOK

From a simple digital communication tool, Facebook has become the most
used social network worldwide. Although many new social networks and
entertainment platforms have appeared, Facebook is still used by many users for
many reasons.
1. Easily connect and interact with friends, relatives at home and abroad
Although Facebook was not the first social network to bring people closer
together, it is by far the most successful platform.
Firstly, Facebook helps many people stay connected with relatives, friends,
colleagues... because Facebook has extremely convenient functions such as:
texting, listening - video calling, sharing emotions and commenting comfortably
on other people's writing. You will not have to wait for handwritten letters to
arrive for weeks or months without seeing them or you don’t need to spend money
calling friends for hours because Facebook has a free calling function, creating

convenient conditions. I thought it would bring people closer together. Facebook
also helps us interact with people around us through sharing memories, posting
photos and videos, and tagging people. Most typically, during COVID19,
everyone is studying and working at home. Thanks to Facebook, people can still
interact with each other so work is not delayed.
Second, in addition to bringing people closer together, Facebook also
allows us to connect with relatives and friends from the past (lost contact) through
posting information or seeking information. People will not hesitate to share
article widely so that anyone with any information can inform the searcher.
Third, Facebook allows sending 250 friend requests a day 3 so that it can
help us make new friends with common interests, ideals, passions, friends not
only in the country but also abroad through groups, common pages or when we
meet when sharing the same story, certain issues.
Therefore, it can be said that social networks are a bridge that connects,
strengthens existing relationships and creates opportunities to establish new
relationships.
2. Update information quickly and easily
Facebook almost brings the whole world to one platform. Not only can
users update their friends' situations, they can also know global content and what's
happening in real time.
Updating information quickly is considered an "attractive" feature for
Facebook users. No need to buy newspapers or waste time watching news
programs, you just need to take out your phone and open Facebook to be able to
update hot news, the latest events at home and abroad.... With Facebook, you can
capture social information extremely quickly, and follow social development
trends because Facebook is a popular social networking site for every country in

the world with a population of up to 2,989 billion people monthly activities. 4
Therefore, all the hottest information is widely shared by everyone and we can
see it right on the news feed with just a quick glance.
Thus, Facebook is a convenient and useful means to update information
without any cost, so it is the top choice for users.
3. Facebook is a useful entertainment tool after stressful and tiring times
Not only is it a place to connect with friends and update information,
Facebook is also a useful entertainment channel after every stressful and tiring
working hours. Specifically, Facebook has hundreds of funny videos from
countries around the world, thousands of funny and creative photos of young
people and thousands of clips cut from classic cinema works... has a high
entertainment effect. This application is also a huge store of attractive games that
are updated regularly, you can freely choose and play as much as you like without
getting bored. In fact, 90% of people joining Social Community5 belong to the
entertainment field. This shows the usefulness of Facebook to users.
The great benefit of social networks is that they help users have moments
of entertainment and relaxation with integrated utilities such as games, music, and
movies. Even viewing newsfeeds and reading positive posts will help you feel
less tired and stressed after a hard day of work and study.
4. Facebook is an ideal place to do business and purchase
Firstly, Social Networks create conditions for many people to sell, trade
multi-category items or advertise their brands to reach more customers. Doing
business and making money online on social networks is increasingly popular and
brings a significant source of income for individuals and businesses. You can sell
through your personal page or create a separate business page to do business and
promote products. Many social networking platforms provide features and tools

for sales such as livestreams, opening online shops, posting products, automated
consulting, etc.
Second, it will also be very convenient for buyers to just sit at home, choose
an item on Facebook and wait for it to be delivered, without having to waste time
choosing at distant stores.
It can be said that Facebook is a "fertile land" for people who like to do
business and helps people buy products anywhere they want without having to go
too far to search.
5. Facebook is a means of education and spiritual nourishment
Facebook is also a place to nurture people's souls and emotional lives. This
is a gathering place for touching films full of human values, touching stories about
human love and images evoking the best emotions of love, love versus hate,
hatred. anger at evil and tyranny... all have a great effect in forming personality
and cultivating human morality.
Through social networks, you can express your personal opinion as well as
share your feelings and opinions about a certain issue. Sometimes your happiness
will be multiplied when there are many friends sharing the joy or your sadness
will decrease when there are people sharing and sympathizing with you.
Not only that, Facebook will bring you a lot of good and useful knowledge
in studying because Facebook has a sharing function so you can receive good
learning materials from people around and video lectures from teachers,...
In short, Facebook has a lot of positive effects. It is not only a tool for
entertainment and connecting with friends, but it also has the function of buying,
selling, educating and nurturing the human soul.
III. DISADVANTAGES OF FACEBOOK
There is no denying the fact that today's social network Facebook plays an
important role in the lives of young people. However, the abuse of Facebook is
increasingly showing its consequences. In addition to being addictive and time-
consuming, this social network can make you vulnerable.
1. Facebook reduces human interaction
8
Firstly, the explosion of social networks in general and Facebook in
particular has reduced human interaction and communication. When Facebook
provides users with many new, modern features such as messaging, video calls,
and comments, this has reduced face-to-face meetings and people are "lazy" to
interact directly with each other. For example, when you need to find a person to
communicate or chat, through Facebook, just a message or a status line on your
personal page can convey what you want to say about that person. Not only that,
when people spend too much time on Facebook, they have no time or concern for
the people present in their real life. Imagine how your friends and relatives will
feel while you keep your eyes glued to Facebook through your smartphone screen
when meeting them. Social networks not only makes you spend less time with
real people around you, but also makes people around you sad when you value
"virtual" friends more than the “real” people in front of you. If you keep doing
that, gradually relationships will break down and no one will want to see you
anymore.
Second, Facebook is a pastime that can quickly affect productivity and
waste our time. Spending too much time on Facebook causes people to ignore
precious time with loved ones, for useful hobbies such as reading, exercising, and
also affects work productivity by always procrastinating. Instead of focusing on
finding a future job by learning the necessary skills, young people only care about
"drama", just want to quickly learn about instant information, videos or statuses.
This is really unnecessary because it only makes us more angry, jealous and self-
conscious.
2. Facebook causes many serious diseases for users
First, if users depend too much on Facebook, it can result in an addiction to
social media. Facebook is like an addictive cocaine. Picking up the phone and
checking social networks is no longer something to think about because it is
deeply imprinted in our mind. Over time, the prospect of being "addicted" to the
point of picking up the phone every few minutes to check for updated information
even while driving and missing out on sleep at night is not far-fetched. In fact,
9
Vietnamese people spend about 6.2 hours/day using smartphones. On average, in
a week, each Vietnamese person uses 20.5 applications, of which Facebook is one
of the six applications most used by Vietnamese people. 6These are all numbers
that show the great dependence of users on social networking applications.
Second, constantly accessing Facebook can lead to stress, anxiety and
negative feelings. Facebook creates a false picture of reality, with users influenced
by photos and updates that give them the impression that people are living a much
better life than they are. Therefore, Facebook makes users tend to compare their
lives with others, thereby leading to stress, depression and negative emotions. In
addition, nowadays young people, also known as GenZ, have the phenomenon of
sleeping during the day and waking up at night. The light emitted from the screens
of phones will fool your brain, disrupting your circadian rhythm. This leads to
lack of sleep, seriously affecting health and spirit. It is also one of the causes of
negative emotions and stress for users.
3. Facebook's lack of control creates an unhealthy environment on social
networks
First, users may have large amounts of data stolen and there are many
scams, fake news happening on Facebook. When participating in social
networking sites, most users must provide necessary information to create a
personal account such as phone number and email. Along with the lax policy of
managing users' personal information, it is entirely possible for users' personal
information to be leaked, and users may not even know their information has been
stolen. In addition to facing the risk of information being leaked, scams and fake
information on Facebook confuses users. Taking advantage of the fact that
Facebook is just a virtual space and the censorship is not yet strict, there are many
subjects scamming for many purposes such as: violating the law, defaming the
Vietnamese state, etc... Specifically, in 2022, more than 12,935 cases of online

10
fraud were recorded, with 2 main types of fraud: fraud to steal personal
information and financial fraud im Vietnam. 7
Second, bullying and violence on social networks are a current serious
problem in society. 'Keyboard warriors' feel comfortable online because they
often say things that they would not dare to say or express opinions in real life.
They often speak rudely and humiliate others on social networks and make fun of
it because they think no one will know them through Facebook's anonymous
function. Evidence for that is that Vietnam is in the top 5 countries with the lowest
civilized index in cyberspace according to a Microsoft survey 8. Cyber violence
can happen to anyone from children, adults, companies,... Cyber violence is a
never-ending problem and leaves extremely serious consequences so the
government needs to increase legal deterrence.
IV. SOLUTION
1. Managing Time and Enhancing Direct Communication
Managing the time spent on Facebook plays a crucial role in reducing
dependence on this platform. First and foremost, setting time limits is essential to
control Facebook usage. Determine a specific time frame each day for Facebook
and strictly adhere to this schedule. Additionally, you can use time-limiting apps
to help restrict excessive usage and receive reminders to exit the application after
exceeding the designated time. However, to make this effective, users' self-
discipline is considered the key to this approach.
Furthermore, Establishing a schedule for activities away from social media,
particularly direct communication with friends and family, is crucial for limiting
Facebook usage. Enhance plans for in-person meetings and direct conversations.
Meeting and conversing with loved ones in person fosters genuine communication
and lessens reliance on online communities like Facebook.

2. Taking Care of Physical and Mental Health
Taking care of both physical and mental health plays a crucial role in
maintaining a balanced and positive life while using Facebook. Firstly, allocating
dedicated time for self-care is essential. Set aside at least a small portion of the
day to focus on improving physical health, including exercise, eating healthily,
and getting sufficient sleep. This not only improves physical health but also
lessens excessive Facebook use.
A positive outlook is also necessary for users to live healthy lives and avoid
being easily drawn into the negative aspects of social media, in addition to
physical health. Cultivating this mental well-being can stem from developing
stress and pressure management skills. Practicing emotional control, setting goals,
time management, and problem-solving can help maintain a positive mindset and
optimism. This allows users to approach the online environment thoughtfully and
take advantage of its benefits without unnecessary stress or pressure. Users can
use Facebook more intelligently and lead happier, healthier lives by taking good
care of their physical and mental health.
3. Improving Facebook Security
The negative effects of using Facebook stem not only from how users
engage with the platform and their thought processes but also from Facebook's
security. This needs to be addressed by both users and Facebook's software
development team. Users should regularly review and modify the privacy settings
on their Facebook accounts. This ensures that their personal information is
protected and only shared with those they intend. Additionally, users should limit
the sharing of excessive personal information on social media and control what is
publicly displayed. This helps secure privacy and prevent the exposure of
sensitive information. For the development team, regularly checking and
upgrading software vulnerabilities is crucial. Ensuring that the application is
constantly updated helps rectify security weaknesses and ensure user safety.
The issue of fake news and scams also needs to be addressed. Users should
review and revoke unnecessary application and game permissions on Facebook.
12
They should also verify the authenticity of news and information before sharing
to avoid deception or spreading false information. For developers, setting up
automatic content moderation features is extremely important. An automatic
content moderation system helps ensure that posts are reviewed before being
shared, preventing harmful content and reducing negative impacts on the online
community.
Particularly, the issue of online violence brought on by Facebook needs to
be denounced and addressed. This arises from various factors, either intentionally
or unintentionally. Facebook users must therefore be aware of how they use the
site and pay attention to how they do so in a way that is respectful of other people
and consistent with Facebook policies. This includes the way they speak on social
media, leave comments, or even while messaging with friends. Even the smallest
actions on Facebook can have significant consequences for individuals facing
online violence. Victims of this issue should be brave and unafraid and report to
the authorities when necessary. It's not just the responsibility of users; even
government agencies must enforce penalties and sanctions against individuals
engaging in online violence. This serves as a deterrent, ensuring that no one makes
these mistakes.
Addressing these negative impacts on Facebook requires the participation
of not only users but also the Facebook team and government agencies. As
university students, it is our responsibility to educate ourselves on how to use
social media effectively and civilly and to vehemently condemn inappropriate
behavior on these platforms.

CONCLUSION

The social network Facebook is basically a part of today's society. It has

been, is and will be bringing to human life more and more interesting, highly
interactive utilities as well as maximizing functions. However, Facebook is also
a place where negative aspects arise that make many people worried. Therefore,
we need to understand clearly the measures from ourselves and the community to
13
participate in social networks in the most positive way. To avoid being affected
by negative activities on Facebook, each of us must become a wise user. This will
help each individual use Facebook more effectively and bring more value to the
community.
