2. English Version
Hello everyone, I’m Hoang Tuyet Nga from Vietnam. I am currently studying at the
Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, and until now, I have been studying Korean for 5
years. At first, I started learning Korean just because of my Kpop idols, but then the
more I learned and was exposed to Korean culture, the more I became to enjoy and
love this country. But also because I was given the opportunity to learn a lot about
Korea, I realized that Korean society is not as beautiful as in the movies. That's why I
came to today's speaking contest organized by Seoul Southern University to express
my opinion on one of the topics I care deeply about Gender equality in Korea.
In recent years, feminist movements have almost exploded in Korea. Before the
Covid 19 pandemic hit, we could see a lot of Women's protests in South Korea
demanding laws to protect women from gender inequality and requesting that the
government increase penalties for those who look down on women. So why do such
events appear in a country with a very developed economy, always in the top 10 in
the world? I personally think that Gender inequality in Korea stems mainly from
Confucianism. According to Confucianism, the world is arranged in an order where
the man will be the breadwinner, while the woman will stay at home to take care of
her husband's family and raise the children. However, in today's modern world,
when both women and men have to work hard to earn a living, I think Confucian
concepts are no longer correct. In Korea, problems such as an aging population and
low birth rates are actually rooted in gender inequality. Employers restrict the
recruitment of women and avoid promoting them for promotion because they are
afraid that these female employees will quit after giving birth to focus on family
more than work. As a result, the number of single women is increasing, and with the
pressure of work in an industrial society, giving birth and raising a child also becomes
a terrible burden for women. Looking at issues like these, it is clear that the spread of
feminism is a good sign and should be welcomed. However, some Korean men
strongly oppose the activities of the feminist movement, because they think that this
movement will lose the role of men in society. I think, these people have not been
properly educated about "Feminism", because it does not mean that women will
have more rights than men, but it means that every human being deserves equal
rights and opportunities. Those men don't know that they themselves are victims of
gender discrimination when it is said that men are supposed to always be strong,
have no makeup, no emotions, etc. So if the government can implement effective
communication plans and education measures, then the advantages of gender
equality are not only for women but also for men.
Recently I was also very pleased to see that Korean society is making positive
changes. I hope this country that I love so much will get better and better and that
my speech can spread positive energy and the right knowledge to everyone. This is
the end of my speaking test. Thank you everyone for listening.
