A Detailed Lesson Plan in Teaching Math 3

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to;
a) Identify the parts of the bar graph
b) Construct a bar graph using the table presented
c) Appreciate the importance of bar graph in organizing the data

II. Subject Matter

Title:; Bar Graphs

III. Learning Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

 Greetings
Good afternoon Class! Good afternoon Ma'am

 Opening prayer
Before we start let’s all stand up and pray,
who can lead the opening prayer?
Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom
come, Thy Will be done, On earth as it
is in Heaven. Give us this day, our daily
bread, And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass
against us. And lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil.
 Checking attendance
Monitor/Secretary who is the absent today ?

Thank you, monitor.

None ma'am

Cleaning:
Kindly pick up the piece of paper under
you chair and throw it on the trash can.

 Classroom Management

Rules:

Okay class what are our class rules?

- Come to school on time

1. Review - Do your best
- Listen to everyone specially to
Okay class before we start, who can still the teachers
recall what is the meaning of pictograph ?

Okay what is your answer :

That's correct class, thank you

you may take your sit.

2. Motivation The pictorial representation of data

using images, icons, or symbols.
Before we start on our topic, lets play a game
first. The game called whisper challenge with a
twist.
The game only starts when both players know
the message. Then each player whispers the
message to the next player in his group
successively until the last player gets the
message. The team which can repeat the message
first and correctly receives a point.

Okay class let’s start!

3. Presentation

Lets proceed to our main topic today, Bar

Graph can anyone give me a word or a me ma'am i know the answer
sentence that comes to your mind when
you hear bar graph?
- A graphical representation of data,
Yes student quantities, or numbers using bars or strips

That’s correct! Very good student

4. Discussion Me ma'am
What is a Bar Graph? Anyone in the class who can
read the first slide A bar graph can be defined as a graphical
representation of data, quantities, or
Yes student numbers using bars or strips. They are used
to compare and contrast different types of
data, frequencies, or other measures of
distinct categories of data.

Thankyou Student!

For example:
I’ll show you the power point presentation
and tell me, what do you observe?

The above graph shows how many students like

which season. The seasons are listed as spring,
summer, fall, or winter on the bottom horizontal
axis of the graph. The number of students is
written on the vertical axis as 0, 1, 2…
Alt text: Graph to represent season’s liked by
students of a class

The seasons on the x-axis represent the

categorical data and the number of students
on the y-axis represents the numerical
possible values. And the blue bars represent
the number of students pertaining to each
category or season.

Me ma’am

Bars The rectangles drawn on the bar charts

are called “bars”. The bars display the
number of items under particular categories.

There are two elements of graph. Class who wants

to read those two elements
Axes There are two axes present on the
Yes student graph. One axis is used to represent the
numerical values whereas the other
represents the categorical data against
which the numerical data is plotted.

Properties of Bar Graph A bar graph is

the representation of numerical data by
rectangles (or bars) of equal width and
varying height. The gap between one bar
and another should be uniform throughout.
It can be either horizontal or vertical. The
height or length of each bar relates directly
to its value.
Student can you please
read it.

Me, me, me

Horizontal: Here, the bars are drawn

horizontally from left to right. The data
categories are placed on the vertical axis
and numerical values are placed on the
graph’s horizontal axis.

There are three types of Bar Graph, kindly read it

Me maam.

Vertical: Here, the bars are drawn

vertically from down to top. The data
categories are placed on the horizontal axis,
and the numerical values are placed on the
graph’s vertical axis.

Thank you student!

Who can read the next slide;

Yes ma'am

Grouped This graph represents related sets

of data. Each set of data is graphed
separately but on the same graph. The key
Thankyou student! explains which set of data is shown by the
graph. Example of Grouped Bar graph For
example, in the above graph, the blue bar
represents the number of students in Class
Anyone please read the next slide A that prefer a particular fruit, the orange
bar represents the number of students in
Class B, and the green bar represents the
number of students in Class C that prefer a
particular fruit.

Me ma’am

Bars and Axes ma’am

(raising his/her hand)

A bar graph can be defined as a graphical

representation of data, quantities, or
numbers using bars or strips.

Thankyou students, very good!

5 Generalization
( all students)
What are the 2 elements of bar graph? Horizontal, Vertical and Grouped
Yes student

Very good student!

Next, what is bar graph? (raising his/her hand)

Yes student They allow the reader to recognize

patterns or trends far more easily
than looking at a table of numerical
data.

Very good student!

Next, what are the 3 types of bar graph

class? (the students will count 1-5)

Very good students!

And lastly, what is the importance of knowing

bar graph?

Yes student (they will go to their assigned group)

(the students will assign a group leader.)

Very good class, you really listen carefully.

6 Application

To test your ability. I will divide you into 5 groups,

please count from 1-5.

All students whose number is 1, please stay at the

left side whose number 2, please stay at the right
side, number 3 stay the back of number 1, number
4 stay at the back of number 2, and the last
number here at the center.

Please assign a group leader.

I will give you 5-10 minutes to finish your work.

IV. Evaluation and Remediation (add remediation in case there are students who need to
continue to the remediation activities due to their failed assessment

a. Evaluation
Okay class this time we can apply from what we learned. Let's answers this one.
Okayy ma’am.

Display the following chart and bar graph for discussion. The chart matches the bar graph. Discuss how
the bars are easier to determine most and least number of votes. .

PETS VOTES Dogs 8 Cats 4 Fish 6 Hamster 2 What was the most voted for pet?
Which was the least voted for pet in the survey?
How many more people voted for fish than cats?

b. remediation

Mr. Diemer asked his 35 students in his class what's their favorite ice cream flavor , 17 of them choose
the chocolate flavor, 10 of them choose the Oreo flavor while 8 of them choose vanilla flavor.
Draw a vertical graph and label it also answer the following questions.
1.What was the most voted ice cream flavor?
2. What was the least voted ice cream flavor?
3.What was the second most voted ice cream flavor

V.Assignment

In worksheet on bar graph we will practice different questions on representing the

bar graph from the following data given in the questions.

1. The number of bed-sheets manufactured by a factory during five consecutive

weeks is given below.
Week First Second Third Fourth Fifth

Number of Bed-sheets 600 850 700 300 900

Draw the bar graph representing the above data.

2. The number of absentees in class VIII was recorded in a particular week.

Represent this data on the bar graph

Days Mon. Tues. Wed. Thurs. Fri. Sat.

Number of Absentees 130 120 135 130 150 80

(a) On which day the maximum and minimum students were absent?

(b) How many students were absent on Wednesday and Friday?

3. The average monthly attendance of a class is given.

Month July Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb

Attendance 42 46 30 50 38 20 36 32

Draw the bar graph of the data given.

In which month the average attendance is minimum or maximum?

In which month the average attendance was less than 40?
