International parity conditions are the economic theories that link exchange rates, price
levels, and interest rates together.
purchasing power parity
I. Purchasing Power Parity (Ngang giá sức mua PPP)
1. The law of one price (Quy luật một giá LOOP) LOOP -> hoạtcác động arbitrage khiến giá hàng hóa tại
Identical products or services can be produced and sold in two different markets.
No restrictions exist on the sale (trade barriers) or transportation costs of moving the
products between markets. thị trg hàng hóa lưu chuyển tự do, k có phí ship -> tiện hơn
Competitive markets to establish this condition.
- States that: Consider the price of a good at a specific time in the domestic country P and
foreign country P*, S is the exchange rate between the two countries’ currencies at that
time. The LOOP states that:
P= S .P*
The products prices should be the same in both markets when prices are expressed in
terms of the same currencies.
2. Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) by homogeneous goods (Học thuyết ngang giá sức
mua trong trường hợp hàng hóa đồng nhất)
- PPP is the application of LOOP across countries for all goods and services.
- PPP states that the exchange rate between two countries’ currencies equals the ratio of the
countries’ price levels.
a. Absolute PPP (PPP dạng tuyệt đối)
P = NER.P*
1
- All goods not identical in both countries.
- In fact, restrictions exist on transaction costs and trade barriers.
- Statistical problems.
b. Relative PPP (PPP dạng tương đối)
- RPPP holds that the relative change in prices between two countries over a period of time
determines the change in the exchange rate over that period.
𝑁𝐸𝑅(𝑡 + 1) 1+𝜋
=
NER(t) 1+𝜋∗
π: inflation rate in the domestic country.
π*: inflation rate in the foreign country.
- The relative form: ∆𝑁𝐸𝑅(%) = 𝜋 – 𝜋*
Exercise 1:
US (CPI) = 124,5
UK (CPI) = 137,5
Tính S(PPP,t)?
Exercise 2:
Use the information in the table below to answer the following questions.
2
- The degree to which the prices of imported and exported goods change as a result of
exchange rate changes is termed pass-through.
(Hệ số chuyển giá là tỷ lệ giá hàng hóa xuất nhập khẩu thay đổi do tỷ giá thay đổi)
Example:
Only 71% of the exchange rate change was passed through to the USD price. The remaining
29% has been absorbed by BMW.
d. Shortcomings
- Do not consider interest rates, government’s intervention. statistical problem, productivity
differentials.
- Do not consider substitution effect: increase in price level of domestically-produced goods
can be substituted by other goods rather than imported goods.
- Do not consider changes in technology or natural resources.
- Works in the long run (some factors may not work in short run).
- Based only on the international exchange of goods and services and do not consider
financial flows (dòng luân chuyển vốn) and money stocks (lượng cung tiền).
3
- Arbitrage can be defined as the act of simultaneously buying and selling the same or
equivalent assets or commodities for the purpose of making certain, guaranteed profits.
- The investor buys an asset at one price and simultaneously sells at a higher price, thereby
earning a profit without investing any money or being exposed to any risk.
2. Interest rate parity
IRP is an arbitrage condition that must hold when international financial markets are in
equilibrium.

or

=
S 1+𝑖∗
i: interest rate in the domestic country.
i*: interest rate in the foreign country.
- The relative form: ∆𝑆(%) = 𝑖 – 𝑖*
3. Covered Interest Arbitrage (CIA)
Quy tắc đầu tư CIA:
- TH1: (1 + i) > F.(1/S).(1+i*) thì vay bằng ngoại tệ và đầu tư bằng nội tệ.
- TH2: (1 + i) < F.(1/S).(1+i*) thì vay bằng nội tệ và đầu tư bằng ngoại tệ.
Điểm kỳ hạn (Forward Margin)
F−𝑆
CIP: i – i* = S = p
p là tỷ lệ gia tăng của tỷ giá kỳ hạn 1 năm so với tỷ giá giao ngay.
p > 0 (F>S): điểm kỳ hạn gia tăng (premium): Đồng ngoại tệ lên giá kỳ hạn và đồng nội
tệ giảm giá kỳ hạn
p < 0 (F<S): điểm kỳ hạn khấu trừ (discount): Đồng ngoại tệ giảm giá kỳ hạn và đồng
nội tệ lên giá kỳ hạn.
1. Điểm kỳ hạn bằng vê độ lớn với chênh lệch lãi suất giữa hai nước.

Exercise 2: Suppose that the annual interest rate is 5 percent in the United States and 8 percent
in the UK, and that the spot exchange rate is $1,50/£ and the forward exchange rate, with one-
year maturity, is $1,48/£. In terms of our notation, i$ = 5%, i£ = 8%, S= $1,50; and F = $1,48.
4
Assume that the arbitrager can borrow up to $1.000.000 or £666.667, which is equivalent to
$1.000.000 at the current spot exchange rate. Check if IRP is holding under current market
conditions?
giao ngay). Xác định cơ hội kinh doanh chênh lệch lãi suất.
Exercise 4: Tính F(SF/$) kỳ hạn 90 ngày biết tỷ giá giao ngay SF= 1,4800/$, lãi suất tiền gửi SF
thời hạn 90 ngày là 4%/năm, lãi suất tiền gửi USD cùng thời hạn là 8%/ năm.
