Santiago 교수님 추천 필독도서
1. Lessons on Architectural Design 建築意匠の講義 /
Hisao Kohyama / Tokyo University Press, Tokyo 1996 (In
Japanese) / This is the only book I recommend that is not
yet translated into English (although there is a Korean edition
by Prof. Kim Kwang-Hyun). Highly respected Architect and
Professor Hisao Kohyama edited this book just at the time of his retirement

from his Chair of Architectural Design at the University of Tokyo. It is a
compilation of the lectures he has given though the years, and reflect the
experience of long teaching years in both the USA and Japan, as well as his
intense activity on design and building. Kohyama goes deeply into the very
basic and most important issues related to the knowledge of architecture and
its basic elements. A complete bibliography is a plus of this volume, which I
always recommend as a first textbook for architectural design students.
2. “Experiencing Architecture” / Steen Eiler Rasmussen / MIT press,
Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2nd edition, 1964 / I
recommend this book with caution. I have seen it included
in the “must read” list in my Tokyo University times, and at
the same time I have seen it called “silly book” in the same
University!
Actually it is the very first Architectural book I have ever
read. I got it out of curiosity just after its Spanish translation in 1975 (I was
just 13.…). Curiously, the author in his preface stated that he wrote thinking
on making it clear to non architectural public, and easy enough for a 14 year
to read it.… well I must say he was successful at that. That is the point:
people well informed in Architecture may find it too basic and elementary.
However, beyond that simplicity lies the deep knowledge built on the
experience of many years. Besides the writing is clear, so it can be a good
choice for starting English Architectural reading.
The book goes over the exclusivist “Architecture=Space” topics, and deals
with more global themes which are essential to Architecture, yet very little
treated in contemporary books. Say volume and void, flatness, scale and
proportion, rhythm, daylight, color and even sound. All, as I said, far from
difficult metaphysic and philosophical theories, but eminently practical and
realistic, easy to experience (hence the title) in our everyday life.
3. «Vers Une Architecture» / Le Corbusier / Les Editions G. Cres et
Cie., Paris 2ème édition 1924, English Edition titled
“Towards a New Architecture”, by Dover Publications,
1985. / Sure there are also Korean translations.
Much has been already said of a book that has been the de
facto manifesto of the 20th Century Avant-Garde Architecture.
Written more than 80 years ago, the book message os still
fresh and inspiring.
Le Corbusier sensitivity towards the classical city and architecture heritage,
his fascination with the rationality and perfection of the modern machines, his
quest for an Architecture of his day, that departs from the rigid academicism
dominant at the time, and the revolutionary passionate language he uses,
makes this book a rewarding reading. Of the many great books he wrote, this
is by far the most influential and long lived. For me, it is the most important
Architectural text of the first half of the 20th Century.
In this book Le Corbusier explains his interpretation of the classical tradition
(Greece, the Renaissance, the Mediterranean towns, etc...) and his
observations of the modern world (The industrial buildings, the cars, the
boats, the air planes.…), and how he uses all that to create his architectural
proposals. This is an important point, as this is a book in which the author
teaches us how he looks at architecture, and also teaches us how he makes
it.
It is obliged reading to get a correct understanding not only of the earlier
Modern Architecture, but also its later revivals, like the 1970’s Five Architects
group (among which Richard Meyer still sticks to Le Corbusier style of the
1920’s), and many of this decade’s Super Stars.
You can be surprised to see how near are many “revolutionary” designs
produced in this decade to Le Corbusier’s early proposals.
4. «Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture» / Robert Venturi
The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1966 /
The second half of the last century is full of great texts
and Architects. There are two books that appeared in
1966, that have been essential to the change of
architectural thinking, form post-war orthodox modernism, to post-modernism
and new-rationalism. Venturi’s text is the first of them.
Venturi follows Le Corbusier tradition of explaining his interpretation of the
architectural tradition, and how he uses this background in his own works.
Beyond a mere post-modern manifesto, this book has an enormously
pedagogical value, as Venturi, being an experienced professor and architect,
clearly explains his way of analyzing and making architecture.
Translations of this book have been widely available in the early 1970’s
(Spanish translation appeared in 1975), and general vision of Architecture has
never been the same afterwards.
5. «L’Architettura della cittá» / Aldo Rossi, 1966 / English translation

I guess there are also Korean Translations of the text.
This is the second book I was talking about in the last
reference.
Aldo Rossi has been compared to Le Corbusier, being himself
painter, architect and influential writer. His first book is also his
most influential and widely read and translated. Actually, Rossi’ s importance
stems more from his writing than from his works, although his work is an
example of consistency between theory and practice. I am no the only to
think that Rossi’ s architectural design quality was not first class in the
beginning. But certainly it improved over years of serious and continuous
work. Unfortunately his early death suddenly cut this process. Any case, while
I often consult Le Corbusier’ s and other masters’ work as a reference for
mine, I seldom do the same with Rossi’ s. It is different with his writings, that
will always stand among the capital texts of the 20th Century.
This is one of the most complex and difficult to read among the books in
this list. However, its reading is a must. It is the origin of today’s thinking of
the City. The City is well beyond a purely mechanical-economical problem, as
it was considered by post-war urban planning. It is a living reality across
history and generations, that must be understood, to keep it alive in the
future. His effort to understand formal typologies present in our cities, goes
beyond the mere functionalism usual on those years. Architecture used to be
designed as isolated objects, regardless of their context. Now, architects
become conscious of the importance of considering the City’s memory and
presence when designing a building. The book’s influence may have been
faster and deeper in Europe than in other cultural areas, but its message is
now widely accepted as common knowledge. This is why its reading is
strongly recommended.
5. «Saper vedere l’architettura» / Bruno Zevi, Einaudi, Torino 1948
English translation “Architecture as Space: How to look
at Architecture”, Horizon Press, New York 1957. /
Korean Translation (I found it easily): 최종현,정영수역,
공간으로서의 건축, 세진사(1983).
Zevi has been one of the most influential 20th Century
architectural writers, his work spanning its whole 2nd half, his first writing
appearing in 1945 (“Towards an Organic Architecture”) and his last writings
appearing in 2001, shortly after his death in 2000. Trained as an Architect in
the States under Walter Gropius, Zevi has always been clearly in favor of a
Modern architecture. Regardless of that, he criticized as what he saw wrong
on academicist moderns, as well as he did on at a time fashionable
post-moderns. His writings are clear and easy to understand, and his interests
range from Wright in the 1940’s, all the way to Libeskind in the late 1980’s
and the 1990’s.
Differently from Rasmunsen, Corbusier, Venturi and Rossi, Zevi’s work is
almost exclusively centered on modern historiography of Architecture (that is:
Architecture of the whole History, seen with a modern vision), theory and
criticism. This book, then, as its title states, gives us a way of looking at
architecture, but not a way of making it.
I have chosen his “Architecture as Space” over other of his also influential
books as can be “Language of Modern Architecture” or “Towards an Organic
Architecture”, because I think his influence has gone from the purely
architectural world to the general thinking. I remember my professors of Art
History (in Architectural School) trying to explain and analyze the spacial
qualities of historical buildings. Zevi defends that the quality inherent of
Architecture is space, and organizes a general view of history from the spatial
perspective. In my opinion it is too radical, as Architecture is far more
complex than it. Space is ONE of the qualities and elements of architecture,
but there are much more things in it, as you may find in the texts
commented above. Regardless of that, Zevi’s writings are necessary reference
to understand most of the architectural discussion of the last 60 years.
6. “Louis Kahn: Essential Texts” / W. W. Norton & Co. (2003)
I already recommended during the lessons the reading of
Kahn’s essay “Form and Design”. Kahn was a good writer.
Although there are not general and long theories coming from
his pen, his essays are so clearly written, and go so deep into
the important points of architectural design, that I think they
should be read by anybody dealing with architecture. Kahn’s
work is a good example of consequent practical application of what he
explains in his writings.
It seems it was not easy to find the essay I recommended. I found in
Amazon this recent compilation of his essays, so I recommend everybody to
get or borrow a copy before it becomes sold out, and read it.

7. “Über das Geistige in der Kunst” / Wassily Kandinsky, R. Piper and
Co. Munich (1912) English newest reprint: “The Art of
Spiritual Harmony”, Stokowski Press (2008)
translated as “Concerning the Spiritual Art”, Dover
Publications, 1977, Sure there are also
Translations.
This is the only non architectural book I include in this basic
list. Together with “Point and Line to Plane” (1925), it may be among the
most widely diffused, quoted and influential books on Modern Art written on
the 20th Century. Kandinsky figure is special, as it became a link of the also
highly influential Russian Avant-Gardes (he was actively teaching in Moscow)
and the West European School, with his collaboration at the Bauhaus. After
the closure of the Bauhaus, he settled in Paris, where he had the opportunity
to be part of the great artistic activity taking part in this city, until his death
in 1942.
The interest of this book goes well beyond its historical significance. It is one
of the basic references in all theoretical developments on Abstract Art. And it
has special transcendence on the recent developments of the so-called
deconstructionist Architecture, which have a direct link with the historical
Avant-Gardes and their theories. It is also interesting to note that it went fast
sold out in 1912, and did not reappear till 1952, the time where orthodox
Architectural thinking started to become questioned (see Zevi’s reference
above), and critics started to look in a new and critical way to the sources of
Modern Art.
It is a very short and well written book, so its reading is easy and very
recommended. Being written between 1904 and 1919, some of its statements
may sound a bit old. But must of the book ideas keep fresh and inspiring, as
they deal with universal aspects of Art, that are independent of any given era.
8. Delirious New York / Rem Koolhaas / First Published in 1978
Latest reprint: Monacelli 1997
Koolhaas needs no presentation. Delirious New York
appeared in 1978, and was an immediate success
among architects desperate to run away from the
boredom installed in the orthodox architectural world of
the late 70’s.
The first edition was a very expensive, large format one, and for years I have
known about it just by references and by the reproductions of the highly
suggesting and expressive illustrations of Koolhaas utopian and
proposals. The reprint in a more widely available format, allowed me to read
it thorough, and I recommend it. You may or may not like OMA’s works, but
this text is a brilliant and heterodox analysis of Manhattan. As all Europeans,
he is fascinated with New York, but not because of its romantic view as the
city of skyscrapers, rather for the energy it emanates, and the radical
consequences he derives from its congested and dynamic reality and the
ideas that have nurtured its shape. He gives special attention to the influence
of utopian but unrealized ideas, and ends by adding his own ones, from a
retrospective perspective.
9. Thinking Architecture / Peter Zumthor / First Published in 1998
2nd edition 2006, Birkhauser, Swiss.
Zumthor is a man that creates architecture through a deep
understanding of the place, the material and the significance of
a given need. His pursuit is free from the need to demonstrate
any aesthetic filiation or to be recognized as a top star.
However, his sincere and committed dedication, thinking and working the
problem until he finds the result approaches the real possibilities of the
project, and then giving it shape patiently till the building is finally completed,
has produced just a series of masterpieces that will last over time. His way is
very personal and unique, but it is a figure that deserves all respect and
attention, as each of his works is a lesson on what architecture really is. He is
comfortable just making architecture, not by writing. This gives more value to
his texts, as he expresses in short and easy words the very basic and
important concepts and ideas that are define his way of working. You can

However, I recommend in this text the reading of Koolhaas first major book,
which in my opinion is the best he has written yet, and has been already an
inspiration to two generations of architects.
During my first teaching semester at SKKU (2008-Fall), I found out that the
architectural basic knowledge varied greatly among students. This is especially

true for students transferring from other specialities. Obviously everybody is
aware of the latest, which is everywhere in magazines and internet blogs (But
please, note that “being aware of” does not necessarily mean “to know or
Also understand well”). I will insist here on some XX Century texts, from very basic
introductory material, to already classical books, necessary to understand
today’s design.
Korean
I talk about classics, for two reasons. First, because these are books which
have proven its importance over the years; we have not that perspective with
current literature, and it is not always easy to decide which of today’s books
are bound to last over time, and which are just ephemeral products of the
moment’s hype. Secondly, because current literature by the Koolhaas and the
likes, as I said, is well known and widely available and commented. The
choice on current writings may be based on personal tastes and preferences,
but the classics have been already chosen by history.….
We are talking now about the very basics. We may go later into discussing
which are the most important texts of the last 10 or 20 years. Also, we can
complete the list with other books of all times we may find helpful in
understanding Architecture’s nature, and developing our own design skills.
I will concentrate mostly on Architectural texts, independently of the fact that
I strongly recommend the reading of books on other disciplines, as panting,
philosophy, history, literature, etc.…
As a last recommendation, I encourage you to read in their language if you
can, especially books originally written in English (or French, Japanese, Italian,
etc. for those of you that feel comfortable in these language).
Santiago 교수님 추천 MUST SEE PLACES IN KOREA
1.- Pukhansan-Pegundae.- Seoul. / Reason: I was surprised to hear that
many SKKu students have never climbed the peaks of Pukansan National
Park... It not only offers a unique perception of Seoul structure and image
from the heights, it is also a part of the city!
2.- Remaining traditional villages, as Hahoi Maul, and Yangdon Maul.
/ Reason: Even if little by little they are becoming kind of touristic Theme
parks, they still are an excellent example of Korean ways of living, and of
integration of the city and its architecture with the environment. It offers also
a perfect counterpoint to the more monumental buildings and complexes as
the already recommended Jongmyo.
3.- Seolleung tombs, Seoul. / Reason: Just love it... even if it is very
renovated. Especially the contrast with over-active Gangnam town.
4.- Pohang city. / Reason: It is a unique city, annexed to a gigantic factory.
ironic Technology, 24 hours activity, history, traditional waterfront and touristic
beaches, busy harbor and markets, along with wild nature are an excellent
field for architectural and urban research. I find also excellent the struggle
from the city and its universities to renovate and improve the urban fabric
and urban life.
5.- DMZ. / Reason: Even we cannot go inside, it is one of the strongest
boundaries in the world.
6.- Paju Book City and Hyeri Art Valley. / Reason: Not only the
experiment of an alternative urbanism is worth a visit, but also the results and
the surprising success of those mono-thematic cities are worth a deep
thought. These cities act also as a natural scale architectural exhibition, where
students can see the results of many experiments by both Korean and
international architects.
7.- Daehag-ro and other urban scenes. Seoul. / Reason: Universities,
commercial and cultural activity and small scale urban spaces, along with and
excellent repertoire of Modern architecture of various qualities and traditional
villages, up the old city wall and Hyehwa-gate, makes this one of my favorite
spots in Seoul.
8 and 9: Buyeo-Gun and Kyeongju-shi: / Reason: these are two excellent
architectural, urban and historical examples from two of the original poles of
Korean Culture. A lot to learn by comparing and relating both areas, not only
by the abstractions of history books.
10.- Bukchon, Seoul. / Reason: Not only one of the few remaining of
traditional towns in Seoul, but a strong challenge of preservation and
enlivening with and authenticity and adecuacy to contemporary life.

Seoul...)
1.- Jongmyo, Seoul. / Reason: Not jut the buildings, but the whole
complex. Unique traditional Korean building, one of the most magnificent
examples in the country. Expressiveness of void space, mastery and simplicity
of material use, construction and detail, sophisticated use of proportions,
creation of a separated world within the city...
2.- Bukguksa Temple, Kyeongju. / Reason: Even when heavily renovated, I

find it not only impressive, but a great example of the uniqueness of Korean
classical design sensitivity towards the expressive use of place and materials.
3.- Kyundong Church, Tongdaemun, Seoul (Kim SwooGeun) / Reason: It
is one of the most fascinating works by the modernistic master, with a
perfect adequacy of image, material, proportion, design, interior space.
4.- Olympic Stadium, Seoul (Kim Swoo Geun). / Reason: With a clear
reference to Tange’s earlier Tokyo’s Olympic buildings of 1964, the stadium
remains an icon of the city, with a clear modernistic image and at the same
time a Korean flavour, far form the uniformness of the usual modernistic
approach, especially from corporate Korea at the period. Compared to today’s
buildings, were sophisticated materials and luxury seem necessary, it is
refreshing to see masterpieces built on a budget, with simple means and not
more pretensions than that of its own nature. Remarkable is also the care
taken with the surrounding exterior spaces. Pity maintenance looks too basic.
5.- Seonyudo Park, Seoul (Joh Sung-Yong). / Reason: It is an exemplary
renovation work to reclaim an industrial facility into an urban park. Most
remarkable is the mastery in the usage of the old buildings into exciting
spaces for exhibition or just walking around. It shows well that unpretentious
work can be extremely successful and expressive.
6.- Seoul Country House, Seoul (Ra Sang-jin, renovation Joh
Sung-Yong). / Reason: It is a surprising example of a totally abandoned
building and forgotten architect, that nonetheless can be considered one of
the best architectural examples of the Korean 1960s. The original building
shows a great intuition and mastery in the structural use of materials and
technologies, to give shape to simple yet extremely impressive spaces. The
renovation work is always sensitive and a great gift to the city architectural
culture.
Santiago 교수님 추천 MUST SEE PLACES IN SPAIN
1.- Historical cities. (i.e. Toledo, Segovia, Avila, Caceres). / Reason: All
those cities have a very distinct personality, with a very compact and well
preserved medieval center. They are excellent examples of organic natural
urbanism with architectures expanding from Roman age to the present times.
2.- Monserrat mountains and Monastery, Barcelona. / Reason: Unique
place, where the strength of the mountain landscape blended with the
simplicity of architecture becomes one of the most impressive places that con
be experienced.
3.- Barcelona: Medieval city, and Eixample. / Reason: Barcelona is one of
the great European Metropolis, with a fine and well preserved medieval
center, and a fantastic XIX century extension (Eixample), where Gaudi’s works
stand along with other excellent average level designs from his time up to
today. BArcelon’a extension is one of the most thoroughly and scientifically
planned in the whole Europe, and a great influence on other cities (among
them Madrid). Also newest developments are worth a visit.
4.- Madrid: central area and XIX and XX century extensions. / Reason:
Madrid has never been a magnificent and rich city as Barcelona, but its
personality is more relaxed and welcoming. From Neolithic settelements to
most recent developments, all settlers were attracted by its rich forests and
hunting (no hunting any more), its moderate climate due to the protection of
the North mountains, and the rich valleys and towns of the south. Even at
present is the european city with more trees per capita.…
A late XIX century extension, Ciudad Lineal (linear city), anticipated Miljutin’s
uban theories of the Russian avant-gardes, and today is maybe the only living
example of a development of that type (and also the place of most of my
built work in Madrid city ^^)
Among new developments, Sanchinarro, Bulevar de Vallecas and Esanche de
Carabanchel , among others, have become showrooms of bold and innovative
housing and urban proposals by the youngest generation of architects.
5.- University Towns: Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Granada,
Alcala de Henares. / Reason: These cities hold some of the oldest
universities in Europe, with their faculties, research centers, dormitories etc,
scattered through town. Unique ambience and excellent architecture and
urban planning and design from late Gothic to the present.
6.- Royal palace towns: Aranjuez (Madrid), San Ildefonso (Segovia). /
Reason: Excellent examples of XVIII century ideal urbanism and landscape, in
towns that have their own modern life.
7.- Guadix (Granada) / Reason: Unique town where even today a large part
of the population lives in sophisticated yet primitive caves. Along with them,
the cathedral and public spaces (just buildings, not caves) are great examples
of late renaissance and baroque architecture.

1.- Alhambra (Granada) / Reason: Unique remaining of fortress and palace,
from late arab Nazari dinasty to early XV century Renaissance. Space
sequences, archtiectural heaviness and dematerialization, sophisticated
bio-climatic resources, strong relation to landscape and surrounding town,
delicate lansdcaping... there are endless reasons for spending a whole day
here.. if possible.
2.- El Escorial (Madrid) / Reason: One of the most magnificent creations of
European Renaissance, huge yet wisely proportioned. Monumental, yet
minimalistic. Site selection, views and landscape, complexity of functions,
mastery of stone construction... there are plenty of lessons to learn. Many
people feel ovewhelmed by the severity of the building, but it is interesting
to compare the place that was once the world’s 1st power center, to the
luxury of later examples as Versailles.
3.- Leon and Burgos Cathedrals. / Reason: Two of the best gothic
examples in Europe. Leon glass work is top, most of it still original, if you are
lucky to see it on a sunny day.
4.- Santa Maria del Naranco (Oviedo city, Asturias) and other Pre-
Romanesque buildings in Asturias and Northern Galicia.
Reason: Those small buildings are unique examples of the European
constructions right after the fall of Roman Empire. Santa Maria is actually a
small palace pavilion, and easy to visit. Other buildings are scattered though
the mountains and more difficult to find, seldom open to the public.
5.- Gaudi’s works in Barcelona: Especially Sagrada Familia, Casa Batllo, Casa
Milla and Parc Guell. Most of them have expensive entrance tickets, and long
waiting lines, so it may be wise to book in advance. It is important no to
limit oneself to the known buildings, but to see them in their excellent
context. Actually most of the architecture of the Eixample is carefully designed
and built.
6.- Madrid Modern Monuments:
-Casa de las Flores (Secundino Zuazo), 1930s. / Reason: Excellent example in
brick of a proposal of modern well light and well ventilated houses with
plenty of green and open spaces within the new extension blocks of the city.
Very careful design, proportion, detailing and constructive logic.
-Torres Blancas (Saenz de Oiza), 1960s. / Reason: Another thoughly researched
and carefully studied typology for housing tower, inspired in both wright
spatial continuity of inside and outside, and Le Corbusier cartesian logic... to
become a master piece of expresionistic raw concrete. excellent design,
construction and detailing, it is still one of the best buildings in town,
-Los Girasoles (J. Antonio Coderch), 1960s. / Reason: An experiment of the
time of Torres Blancas, with the same intention of recovering the open spaces
to the city housing, but this time within the tightness of XIX century closed
block. One of the best projects of the Catalan archtiect, still fresh. And also, a
denial of the misconceived antagonism between Madrid and Barcelona^^
-Caixa Forum Madrid (Herzog and de Meuron) , 2008. / Reason: Most visited
and popular recent building, and a very successful radical intervention on an
old building. Maybe the best building by international stars in the city.
7.- Museo del Prado, Madrid. (Juan de Villanueva, 1786, and several
extensions, last by Rafael Moneo in 2007) / Reason: El Prado is not only
one of the must see top museums in Europe, but the master work of Spain’s
most talented neo-classic architect. Moneo’s extension, even when under
heavy polemics, is a good example of his expertise on building extensions
and mastery in the handling of subtle articulations between old and new.
8.- L’illa Diagonal, Barcelona (Rafael Moneo and Ignasi Sola Morales).
1993. / Reason: This example is a good counterpoint to the “Girasoles”
buildign by Coderch in Madrid, this time a work by an architect from
Madrid’s school in Barcelona. Most interesting is the control of the design
within a huge macro-urban scale in a single building complex, and the
necessary multi-disciplinary approach. Nearby are the “Edificios Trade” complex
by Coderch (1968), worth a visit for his sensitive detailing of the connections
of the free formed buildings woth the outside and the urban fabric.

품들의 재료에 대한 놀라운 장인정신을 보여준 쿠마의 진솔한 건축 이야
기. 한 작품마다 정성을 다했기에 오늘날 50개의 프로젝트를 다룰 수 있
을 만큼 성장한 동경대 쿠마 교수님의 건축 스토리는 건축의 길을 오른
사람들에게 재미와 희망을 준다.

잠재성을 쉽게 써내려간 점이 돋보인다.
5. 칼의 노래, 남한산성, 젊은 날의 숲, 자전거 여행 시리즈 / 김훈 / 소설
가 김훈이 소설 속에서 펼치는 자연에 대한 묘사와 그의 뛰어난 문체는
건축가가 끊임없이 자연을 건축 안에서 정의하고 건축재에 대해 공예적
접근을 하려는 것과 맥을 같이한다고 생각한다. 큰 틀뿐 아니라 디테일에
강한 김훈의 작가적 장인 정신은 건축가가 지녀야하는 덕목이기기에 읽
어보길 추천한다.

디자인의 새로움은 작은 부분의 커스텀 제작을 통해 이뤄진다.
