1. Purpose : The purpose of this procedure is to provide guidance for carrying out concrete core
drilling work safely, prevent injury to person involved in the operation
2. Scope : This procedure is applicable to all project sites. Where work is carried out at main
contractor/ client’s premises/ site and the main contractor/ client has a SWP, the
main contractor/ client’s SWP shall be followed.
3. Reference : Nil
4. Definition : Concrete core drilling, or ring sawing, involves cutting circular holes and removing
concrete cores to allow for services such as electrical, plumbing and sprinkler
installations.
5. Responsibility :
5.1.1 The following arrangements are planned before work commences on site:
a) Effect of drilling on adjacent wall considered
b) Always use two people, one person as the “operator” of the machine on one side, and one person
as the “spotter” on the opposite side.
c) Maintenance of servicing of the machine
d) Noise control measures and hearing protection for operatives
e) Protection of public or other effected
f) Protective clothing and equipment
g) Training for supervisory staff and operatives
5.1.2 Ensures that no person is allowed to operate the equipment unless authorised.

5.2 The Supervisor / Foreman is responsible for continual observational safety checks of their work operations and
to enforce the procedure, any unsafe acts or conditions identified shall rectified immediately.
6.0 Procedure
6.1 The procedure involves bolting a drilling mast to the concrete surface to be core-drilled. During drilling with a
circular drill bit, water from a hose connected to a tap is flushed down the hole to capture dust, remove slurry
and keep the drill bit cool.
6.1.1 Preparation:
6.1.2 Operation:
REV. : 0
• drilling of all holes should start in low gear; stopping the motor before changing to a higher gear;
• feed tap pressure water into the hole to bring up slurry and keep the drill bit cool;
• fit safety covers over drilled core holes, with warning signs fixed according to the WSH Regulations;
• Once breakthrough location has been determined, the spotter will place a container over the spot
where the coring is to occur to contain the concrete plug and water used during coring. If any
water or concrete is not contained, immediate cleanup is required.
• Ensure cleanliness of area during and after procedure. Ensure that slurry is cleaned off walls after
coring of exposed concrete walls to prevent slip and trip hazards.
• Core Drills should never be used without proper knowledge of the equipment and all attachments
• Verify that the core drill, and all accessories are in working condition prior to using the equipment
• Double check all power chords for cuts or frays. Do not operate any core drill with defective
chords.
• Be sure the drill is in the OFF position prior to plugging in the power chord.
• Be sure to have all proper PPE on prior to operating the core drill, safety glasses, hard hat, steel
toe boots, gloves, and ear protection.
• Be sure all sleeves are tightly locked around your arm; loose clothing could get caught in the drill.
6.3.1 Safety Personnel shall keep all the records as per requirements such as
a) Employees training records
b) Examination / test certificate of the equipment
c) Equipment inspection & maintenance records
6.3 Non-conformity
6.4.1 In case of any non-conformity such as expired certificates, damage / non-availability of proper safety
device etc. the PIC shall inform the PIC to stop the operation immediately.
6.4.2 The PIC shall take actions against the responsible parties and shall ensure that the rectification work
