C. THE TEST
READING SKILL
TIME: 60 MINUTES
The test consists of 5 parts with 35 questions. You have 60 minutes to finish. Read the instructions carefully and
complete the tasks.
Lima, Peru
As large numbers of European tourists begin to tire of the delights of inexpensive sun and sand on the coasts
of their own continent, travel agents are putting together trips to more and more exotic destinations which don’t
normally come up in the post-Christmas ‘where are we going this year?’ discussion. One city which is beginning
to appear in more and more brochures is Lima, the capital of Peru. From surfing on the Pacific beaches of Punta
Hermosa to exploring history in the National Museum, Lima has something to appeal to everyone.
The climate makes it an attractive place to visit at any time of the year. Visitors should bear in mind that it is
south of the equator, so the seasons are reversed compared to Europe. The geography of the area, including hills,
valleys and coastal areas, means that conditions can vary considerably from one district to the next. The morning

fog that hangs over the coast of the Surco area in winter, for example, could appear on the same day the next
district, La Molina, enjoys warm sunny weather. Unusually for such a large city, there is almost no rainfall,
although summer showers occasionally come down from the mountains in the evening.
One of the things that strikes any visitors is the cuisine. The mixed population means that many influences are
combined, from native and Spanish dishes to more recent tastes, such as Chinese and other Asian food. Lima’s
seafood restaurants are quickly gaining an international reputation and provide the perfect spot from which to
watch the Lima nightlife pass by.
Getting around Lima can present challenges, even to experienced travelers, but a little patience (and a little
Spanish) goes a long way. Buses and taxis are generally cheap. The rail service, the Lima Metro, provides a
limited service, since the planned system is still in the process of being completed.

4. What does the writer suggest might help in traveling around Lima?
Last year, my family decided to do something different for our holiday. In the past, we had always gone to
the beach, and spent our time sunbathing and relaxing. But this time, we chose a walking vacation around the
Grand Canyon. I’d never done anything like it before, so I felt very nervous before we left.
25
SINH VIÊN

We started in Las Vegas, and a truck left us at the starting point for our first day of hiking. That first day
was terrible! I was so tired, but there weren’t nearly enough rest breaks. My bag was too heavy, and by lunch I was
beginning to think that I never wanted to go hiking again. The first night was awful, too. I didn’t sleep, and I was
so cold. And in the morning we had to wash in cold water, and eat cold food. I got very bored with sandwiches.
We walked about 15 kilometers a day. That seemed like a lot at the beginning, because I’d never done any
walking before, but I slowly got fitter and found it easier. The landscape was amazing - the desert was huge and
the sky was so blue. The best day of all was when we took a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon! I took a lot
of pictures while we were flying because the views were incredible. Our very knowledgeable tour guide told us
some cool facts, too. Did you know the Grand Canyon is 2,377 m deep and 446 km long? That is so huge. But
apparently the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in the Himalayas is even deeper and longer.
Did I enjoy the trip? By the end, yes! It’s a great way to get out and get healthy, and to see the Grand
Canyon without renting a car. But I missed comfort. My second favorite day was probably our last day back in Las
Vegas, when we went sightseeing and shopping, and - best of all - ate out. My hot burger tasted great!

Hi Nick,
Sorry I haven’t emailed you for ages but I’ve been away. Do you remember that at the beginning of the
summer holiday I was really 15 ?
Well, everything changed when I saw my old friend Nam in town about a month ago. He had just come back
from a 16 trip in Cat Tien National Park. Chatting to him made me realize that I should
be more adventurous and optimistic about
17
in general.
I talked to my older 18 Tam and we decided to travel by coach to that national park and 19
20
for three days. We walked through the forest, including the Swamp, an interesting place in the
middle of the national park. I’ll show you my photos of it. I don’t 21 traveling at all. If I
hadn’t done that trip, I wouldn’t have 22 so many wonderful places.

I can’t remember how many times our bread maker has been used since Mum got it at Christmas, but it’s a lot. I
was a bit worried because I read in a magazine that bread makers are one of those gadgets that people are often
given as presents, but then they never use them. I don’t know why that is because it looks really easy to use. You
just put all the ingredients in, press a button, and a couple of hours later you have a fresh loaf of bread. It beeps
once when it’s ready! I love waking up to the smell of fresh bread each morning and Mum says she’ll never buy a
loaf of bread again, so I think it was a really successful present.

I’m a bit frightened of spiders. I don’t mind the little ones, but I don’t like the huge ones that are as big as your
hand. I don’t like killing them though, so when my friend bought me a spider catcher, I was delighted. It’s a long
stick with a kind of brush at the end that picks up the spider without hurting it. Then you can put the spider out the
window. I don’t know who invented it, but I think it’s a great idea.
People say I’m a bit forgetful and they’re probably right. I often lose my keys, so when I was given a key alarm
for my birthday, I was really pleased. It’s a gadget that you attach to your keys. Then, if you don’t know where
they are, you can whistle or clap your hands and you’ll hear the alarm. It’s very loud, and it only stops when you
find your keys and press a button. It does save a lot of time when I’m leaving the house. Before I had the alarm, it
took me five to ten minutes to find my keys. These days all I have to do is whistle and I’m ready to go. The only
bad thing about it is that the batteries run out quite quickly, so I’m trying to be a bit more careful with my keys in
case the alarm’s not working
I was surprised when Mum bought me an ice lolly maker for my birthday. It seemed like a present for a young
child. But then I used it and realized that it was great. You put the ice lolly maker in the freezer. Then, when you
want to make a lolly, you just pour fruit juice into the maker. It freezes in about ten minutes, so you don’t have to
wait very long to eat the lolly. And you can be really creative. I’ve used different fruit juices and put nuts and
yogurt in, too. It’s perfect for a hot day – really quick and healthy, and great fun however old you are!

TEST 3
A. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1. Test type
This test is determined as a final achievement test that lasts 150 minutes due to its administration takes place in
the context of highschool’s final examination.
2. Test purpose
The purpose of this test is to establish how successful the test takers have been in achieving the objectives of
the course. The test is designated to measure the set of oral abilities, including ones related to discourse
management, expressed via lexical items and grammatical forms.
3. Details and accuracy
The test’s contents will align with the teaching material used for the course in terms of its visual images,
language use and teaching points (grammatical forms, lexical items). Hence, the test should guarantee to measure
what students have been taught throughout the semester.
4. Backwash
This test should be designed to generate a significant backwash toward how students will be taught to manage
their English language to achieve particular purposes in real-life contexts. In addition, we hope this test will
provoke the teacher's intention to provide students with more practical usage of grammatical forms and vocabulary
in their lessons. Also, students' production skills should be highly concentrated throughout the process.
5. The constraints of the test.
Timing during the administration of the test might be problematic as timing might be interfered with by either
testers’ setting up procedures or testees’ hesitation mid-conversation. As we want the test to be well-timed as much
as possible, therefore, solutions for these can be proposed in the section afterward.
