Continental Cup over the past decade prior

to mid-September.

This strange streak ended when
Almaz Ayana won the 5000m at the IAAF
Continental Cup in Marrakech, Morocco.

In the probable absence of her
two illustrious compatriots Tirunesh Dibaba and Meseret Defar, Ayana is now being
touted as a potential medal contender at
the IAAF World Championships in Beijing
next summer.

Being called the successor to
Tirunesh and Meseret does not frighten
me, said the 23-year-old Ayana.

I grew up listening about
Tirunesh and Meseret on the radio. I am
proud that people are comparing me with
them. My plan is to achieve more than they
did and to do so with Gods help.

Her victory in Marrakech was

one of two major titles in the Moroccan

city this year. The other came just over a
month earlier when she beat another team
mate, world indoor 3000m champion Genzebe Dibaba, in a pulsating race to win the
African 5000m title.
Understandably, Ayana has fond memories of the picturesque holiday destination,
not for its tourist getaways but the serious
business of athletics.

I would be happy if championships are held there all the time, she says
of Marrakech with a big smile, It is the
city where I have a lot of good memories.
The stadium and its track were comfortable
for me.

Sir John A. Macdonald Should Be Celebrated

Not Ridiculed
son of prominent Chinese immigrants,
proposed to name Union Station after
Canada's great first prime minister.
I hope these proposals become successful
in a timely manner.
In endorsing the naming of Union
Station, Councillor Minnan-Wong said
how "Union Station is a great monument
to Sir John A. because he is known for his
National Policy, for building a railway
from coast to coast" and that it would be
a "better place in terms of recognition of
Sir John A. than Union Station, probably
the most important railway station in the
country."

Sir John A. Macdonald

By Samuel Getachew
I would like to add my name to a long
list of Canadians who are determined to
celebrate Canada's greatest citizen, Sir
John A. Macdonald this year.
His celebration is even more urgent as
we are less than a year away from what
would have been his 200th birthday in
January. Is there really a fitting tribute to
give to such a magnificent and important

Canadian citizen -- our very own George

Washington?
Earlier this week, Scarborough City
Councillor, Paul Ainslie, tabled a motion
to honor the great one by ordering City
staff to look at a prominent Toronto
street to be named after him. The city's
executive committee agreed to study the
proposal. Just last month, downtown
councillor, Denzil Minnan-Wong, a

There are many critics opposed to Sir John

A. Macdonald for his well-documented
racist views such as being passionately
opposed to Asian immigration to
Canada. According to the National
Post, a University of Ottawa professor,
Timothy Stanley, found records showing
the late Prime Minister said in 1885 "if
we allowed Chinese into Canada...the
Aryan character of the future British
America should be destroyed."
And that "if the Chinese were allowed
to vote, 'they might control the vote
of that whole province' and their
'Chinese representatives' would foist
'Asiatic principles,' 'immoralities,' and
'eccentricities' on the House, 'which are
abhorent to the Aryan race and Aryand
principles.'"
While these views are wrong by
today's standard, I wonder if they were
mainstream views more than a century
ago. These were the old eras when
Canadian women were seen as properties
and when a slew of American heroes,
including George Washington, were

once proud owners of slaves.

While I acknowledge the former Prime

Minister held some wrong-headed views,
I believe his critics are being too harsh on
him while ignoring his important role in
confederation and Canadian federalism.
Let us compare one of Canada's beloved
NDP leaders of past years, Tommy
Douglas. Douglas was a Canadian hero
himself who was born almost a century
after the birth of the former Prime
Minister.
Long before Douglas became a noted
Saskatchewan Premier and father of
Canada's sacred Medicare, he held an
extremist view of human production.
In his graduate thesis, according to the
National Post, he argued how poverty is
linked to "subnormal families, ones that
are mentally inadequate -- 'anywhere
from high-grade moron to mentally
defective' -- of low moral character and/
or a burden on the public purse."
The Post wrote that he continued to
advocate for "sterilization of those
deemed mentally defective or incurably
diseased, arguing it is 'consummate folly'
to let subnormal families 'bring in to the
world large numbers of individuals to fill
our jails and mental institutions and to live
upon charity.'" Failing that, he advocated
for "segregation of sub-normal families,
and medical certification to ensure
someone is mentally and physically fit
before getting married."
In 2004, CBC named Tommy Douglas
'The Greatest Canadian of All Time."
Why is there a double standard when
it comes to Canada's very first and
accomplished Prime Minister?

Political activist Samuel Getachew, who

ideal of citizenship.

An ordained Anglican priest, Heap was born

in Manitoba and made his mark in Toronto.
He attended the prestigious Upper Canada
College on a scholarship and continued
with Queen's University, the University of
Chicago and McGill University, where he
studied divinity. He embraced socialism
and the student Christian movement to
advocate for social justice dreams. He
became a passionate union activist with the
(now) Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada and he fought for
worker's rights and for their social safety
nets.

He attempted electoral politics in earnest

in 1968 as the NDP candidate in Spadina
in the midst of the Trudeaumania wave.
He was defeated, coming in second to the
Liberals' triumph. He tried again, this time
in provincial politics, running for Stephen
Lewis's Ontario NDP but was once again
defeated. In 1972, he was finally elected as a
Toronto city councillor in Ward 6. By 1981,
his one-time riding (by then called TrinitySpadina) where he had been a candidate
more than a decade earlier had become a
"safe Liberal riding," when he once again
agreed to run for Ed Broadbent's NDP. The

Elizabeth Greaves, once told the Toronto

to allow the group to own the house for less
instead of making a fortune on the open
market.

With his beloved wife, Alice Heap, they

used their immaculate and spacious house
in Kensington Market as hub for activism

As a citizen and an elected official, Heap

used his wisdom to mentor young leaders
such as Jack Layton and Olivia Chow, and
continued to oppose war and advocate for
peace. He co-founded the now defunct

Toronto Disaster Relief Committee and

spoke for the homeless via his association
with the Church of the Holy Trinity. He was
troubled by then-apartheid South Africa
and East Timor and wanted Canada to be
a welcoming home to the world's destitute
refugees.
By the time he died at the age of 88 last
week, almost two years after Alice, the
courageous and daring Heap had left Canada
much better than he found it. He believed
in our consciousness, our generosity and
believed in the power of government to
make us an inclusive society.

In the last couple of years of his life, he

and his late wife struggled for proper
housing and long term care in their old
age. Their experience is a reminder we
still reside in an unjust, imperfect country
that is more perfect than most yet still with
an unfulfilled promise of a more perfect
citizenship for all. To those who may want
to emulate the beautiful lives of Dan and
Alice Heap, theirs is a reminder that we
still have much work to do to make our
citizenship more perfect and, as Canadians,
we are profoundly powerful to make it a
reality.

2012, bound for Turkey.
The RCMP told media in August, 2014,
that Maguire had purchased a one-way
ticket to Syria, presumably to join the
ranks of Islamic State fighters.

BY AEDAN HELMER, OTTAWA

SUN
Ottawa man in Syria killed: Reports
John Maguire's mother says she knew
this day would come since the day he
left, bound for Syria on a one-way ticket
to the ranks of terrorists.
"I've been preparing for this moment
since the day he left," said Maguire's
mother Patricia Earl. "Because I'm
thinking, you are not going into a good
situation."
Sitting in her kitchen, Patricia Earl
and husband Bill spent several hours
Thursday recalling the radical change
they witnessed in John since his days
as a "sharp" and "mischievous" kid
who grew up playing hockey and punk
rock in Kemptville, to the one they
saw spewing extremist hatred in front
of a bombed-out backdrop in an ISIL
propaganda video.
When Earl stepped into the corner gas
station that morning in early December
to see her son's face staring back at her
from the front page of the newspaper,
she shouted "Jesus Christ!" and
stumbled out of the store, forgetting to
pay.
"I can't explain it," she said. "The kid
that was in that video, that wasn't John.
It wasn't the boy that I raised."
In the video, he does not appear to be
under duress, but there is no way to
know if he made the statement of his
own free will.
Earl said she has received no official
confirmation of her son's reported death.
A family member who works with
the federal government saw the initial
report on an ISIL-linked Twitter account
-- proclaiming Maguire's "martyrdom"
and claiming he'd killed in battle while
fighting for the Islamic State -- and
called her just before the report hit the
news.

Maguire maintained contact with his

mother through e-mail, the odd phone
call and via Skype chat sessions. At
one point, he asked his mother to
book a flight to join him in Syria for
his wedding to a 19-year-old girl he'd
been introduced to through his Islamic
"brothers" who felt "it was about time
he got married."
Maguire told his mother he could get
her into the country the same way he'd
gotten in: "By bribing the security
guards."
She'll never forget the last time they
spoke, in the late summer of 2014.
It was the only Skype chat that didn't
end with John saying, "I love you."
"Our last Skype call was not real great,
because he yelled at me when I said 'I
don't understand your whole Islamic
State thing to be honest with you, John.
I mean, how many people do you have
to kill?'
"I don't even know what he said, but he
yelled at me and he hung up the Skype
(chat). Previous to that call he always
told me he loved me. And I always
ended every call with my children with
I love you."
Rifling through photos of a babyfaced
John playing hockey in a junior Sens
jersey, showing off his silver medal
in figure skating, riding his motocross
bike, or decked out in black eyeliner in
his "punk phase," Earl acknowledged
her son's upbringing was at times a
turbulent one.
Earl has remarried after her divorce from
John's father Peter in 2007, following a
lengthy separation, and she described a
household where the kids, John and his
elder sister, bore witness to intensifying
episodes of domestic discord.
Patricia said John's father -- Peter
Maguire, a former Kemptville-area
auto mechanic -- hasn't been heard from
since he moved to Russia in May 2009.
Maguire attended North Grenville
District High School, and later moved
into Ottawa to live with his paternal

grandparents, finishing high school at

Hillcrest. He had little contact with his
mother for about six years during his
adolescence.
He then enrolled in Los Angeles City
College in East Hollywood, with Earl
paying for a portion of the tuition from
money she had managed to put away.
Earl said her son's interest in the Muslim
faith began around that time, but she
still has no idea how his ideology so
quickly escalated to extremism.
"When John first started to get interested
in the Muslim faith, I didn't have any
problem with the faith, never dreaming
in a million years that this was going to
be the result of it," she said.
Earl and her husband Bill recounted

long chats they'd have with John after

he came back into their lives, and were
alarmed by the radical change.
She believes Maguire's path to jihad
began after he befriended radical
Islamists some time after returning
to Ottawa, where he attended the
University of Ottawa, and worked at
Walmart and an Independent Grocer on
Bank St.
"Because he'd say things to me like,
if he ever got shot and killed or if
somebody ever pointed a gun at his
head it wouldn't bother him. It would
sure as hell bother me.
"And that if he ever died would I bury
him as a Muslim."

A misspent year
Dear editor,

LETTERS

Restoring the long-form

census will save money,
boost the economy and
improve our quality of life

Looking back on the year, it is

increasingly clear that Prime Minister
Stephen Harpers priorities are no longer
the priorities of Canadians.

Dear editor,

His Conservative government has

focused economic attention solely on
its promise to introduce an expensive
income splitting scheme.

Eliminating the long form census

was a costly mistake and its high
time Parliament fix it and restore it
by passing Bill C-626.

Paying for it has trumped every other

need. Over a billion dollars for veterans
services have gone unspent while the
government closed nine local offices
making it even harder to access a
support system the Auditor General
called complex and time-consuming.
Veterans who needed mental health
services have been left waiting months,
even years, to get help.

In 2011, Stephen Harper replaced

the traditional long form census with a voluntary survey that
cost taxpayers more$22 million
moreand produced inferior data.
Its numbers were unusable for 25%
of our towns and werent comparable to past surveys.

Spending on infrastructure projects

through the Building Canada Fund has
been cut by 90%. Employment Insurance
payroll taxes have been frozen at
artificially high levels. Other taxes, such
as tariffs on imports, have gone up. Public
safety has been shortchanged, from
search and rescue to food inspection and
rail safety to environmental protection.

Worse still, groups like rural residents, the poor and youth were undercounted because of low response
rates. That bias not only compromised the census, but it damaged
other surveys which rely on census
data to correct their sampling.

These errors make it harder for

Single mothers and fathers, those who
have the least and couples with similar
incomes will get nothing. Among the
few who will benefit, the largest benefit
will go to those who need it the least.

outlook. Economic growth continues
to be low, the jobs market sluggish
and household debt high. Federal
mismanagement has left big projects like
the Keystone XL pipeline struggling to
get going. Exports are only returning to
their pre-recession peak.

Groups like the Canadian Chamber

of Commerce, Canadian Federation
of Independent Business and the
Canadian Medical Association have
been calling for a fix.

Thats why I proposed C-626 to restore the long form census. It would
save money and produce better data
for everyone. This bill also ensures

Many people will not try acupuncture because

they are afraid that the needles will hurt or that
the experience will be unpleasant. This is really a tragedy, as acupuncture has the capacity
to effectively treat a variety of chronic health
conditions that typically do not respond to other
forms of intervention.

There are times where you can feel an insertion

prick with the needles that lasts for a couple of
seconds. You can also feel a nervy sensation that
radiates through the area being worked on for a
brief period of time. Other sensations include
a dull achiness or pressure around the needles.

Cheers

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

In my practice, I have used acupuncture to treat

both children and adults. In fact, I have done
full acupuncture treatments on kids as young as
4, including needling points on the face, scalp,
hands, and feet. Even patients this age typically
do not experience any discomfort that lasts for
more than a second or two.
The truth of the matter is that nobody really
likes needles. We are generally conditioned to
have an aversion to them because of the trauma
involved in getting shots and other procedures
using hypodermic needles. It is always funny
when a new patient comes in and confesses
in a voice that suggest their situation is utterly
unique, 'I don't like needles.' Most new patients
make this confession-- and most are very surprised by how pleasant the treatment actually is,
even though it involves needles.

Many traditional Chinese doctors use a more

aggressive style of needling that involves strong
stimulation and thick needles. I have found this
to be a turnoff for many Westerners, as excellent results can be achieved without having to
induce strong sensations around the needles.
If you are interested in acupuncture but are reluctant to try it because of the potential pain involved in treatment, I encourage you to move
through that fear, as you will likely find acupuncture to be a pleasant, gentle, and very effective form of treatment for your health care
needs.
I hope this helps you overcome any apprehension so you can get proactive about your health

Free speech alive in France; dying in Ethiopia

Thank God, free speech, the basis for

all other freedoms, is alive in France
The French Revolution (1789
1799) was preceded by the Age of
Enlightenment in Western Europe
in which intellectual giants and
philosophers like Francis Bacon,
Rene Descartes, John Locke, Baruch
Spinoza, Pierre Bayle, Voltaire, Francis
Hutcheson, David Hume, Cesare
Beccaria, Immanuel Kant, and Isaac
Newton influenced society by publishing
widely read works. Coinciding with the
Age of Enlightenment was the Scientific
Revolution, spearheaded by Englands
Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727). Their
noble works fostered the principle
of tolerance to diverse ideas and
acceptance of multiple religious beliefs
to take center-stage in the development
of society with which some rulers
went along. Voltaire was among these
intellectuals of the Enlightenment who
gave the world this immortal quote: I
do not agree with what you have to say,
but Ill defend to the death your right
to say it; the quote is attributed to
the French philosopher Voltaire (1694
1778) who died 11 years before the
outbreak of the Revolution.
French citizens regardless of their
ethnic background, religious creed,
social status, political affiliation or
ideology came out in demonstration
of epic proportion estimated at over
3.7 million participants across France
a number reportedly unprecedented
in modern history of France. In Paris
alone 1.6 million demonstrators showed
up at Republic Square including world
leaders representing more than 40
countries. The peaceful demonstration
had one and only one singular objective,
which is defending freedom of speech
guaranteed by the French Constitution
in which the values of Liberty, Equality,
and Fraternity are enshrined. Indeed,
as emphatically and unanimously
confirmed by the demonstrators,
freedom of speech is an indispensable
prerequisite for all other freedoms!
The quote by the renowned philosopher
Voltaire came to light on 07 January 2015
during the mammoth demonstration
underlining the invaluable legacy of free
speech remarkably upheld by the French
people to this date as witnessed by the

I went on to say It is bizarre indeed

that Ambassador Mazimhaka sided
with the brutal TPLF party in the face
of condemnation of the state-sponsored
atrocities by esteemed international
institutions such as the Congress of the
United States and prominent leaders in
the United Kingdom including Prime
Minister Tony Blair. His bias in favor
of the ruling clique, even before the
start of an independent investigation

promised by Meles to the international

community, is confounding and
disappointing.
In the subsequent Ethiopian election of
2010 the ruling party claimed 99.6%
win of the 547 parliamentary seats.
The European Observer Mission
decried the election process as neither
free nor fair; the White House endorsed
the ruling of the Mission. But the AU
Observer Team once again declared the
election free and fair!!
As if the above gross abuse to
democratic principles and values is not
enough, the EPRDF regime has already
started rigging in advance the May 2015
election with the aim to scoring 100%
of all seats by disqualifying strong
rival parties under legally and morally
inadmissible pretense.
It is a shame that the TPLF is celebrating
its so-called 40th anniversary at this
time when political prisoners and
prisoners of conscience in Ethiopia
including: Andualem Aragie, Eskinder
Nega, Andargachew Tsige, Abraha

Haptamu Ayalew, Daniel Shibeshi,

3 Journalists, Temesgen Desalegn and
tens of thousands others are languishing
in filthy jails in Ethiopia. It is a shame
to celebrate the anniversary when basic
freedoms of expression are blocked and
journalism is considered a crime by the
repressive regime.
Freedoms of expression have been
muzzled by the TPLF/EPRDF regime
for the last 23+ years in colonized
Ethiopia. All pillars of democracy are
under the tight control of the merciless
and lawless repressive regime. Political
leaders and renowned journalists
are either in prison or in exile. In a
nutshell, a totalitarian regime scoffing
Western democratic values is misruling
Ethiopia. One would hope that Western
powers, the U.K. and U.S.A. in
particular, would rethink their policy
of providing political and financial
support to regime at the expense of
their taxpaying citizens. They have to
do so considering the strategic location
of Ethiopia bordering the Red Sea in
the Horn of Africa that separates her by
a short distance from the Middle East
in political turmoil of epic proportion
probably leading to disintegration of
states like Libya, Iraq, and Syria.
Finally, I would like to extend my deep
condolences to the families of martyrs
who lost their lives as well as to their
loved ones, relatives, friends and the
entire citizens of France.

British MPs to visit Ethiopia in bid to secure

release of Andy Tsege
By Jonathan Owen, Independent

prieve, who will accompany the MPs to

Ethiopia, said: I think Mr Cameron doesnt
understand how serious this is. I think that
Andy is going to be seen, as the years go by,
as Ethiopias Nelson Mandela.
Campaigners fear that Mr Tsege is being tortured and concern is mounting for his wellbeing. His sister Bezuaybhu said: Hes in his
cell for 24 hours a day, with an electric light,
hes having no exercise, hes not having contact with anybody so if this is not torture
what is it? Her brother has been kidnapped,
detained illegally and should be brought
back to Britain, she added.

A delegation of British MPs will visit Ethiopia next month in a bid to secure the release
of Andargachew Andy Tsege, a British father of three who is under a death sentence.
Mr Tsege, 59, a leading critic of the Ethiopian government who came to Britain as a
political refugee more than 30 years ago, has
been held in solitary confinement for the past
six months.
He vanished during a stopover in Yemen last
June, during a trip from Dubai to Eritrea, in
what campaigners say was a politically motivated kidnapping. Weeks later it emerged he
had been imprisoned in Ethiopia.
His precise whereabouts remain unknown.
The Briton, who is the secretary-general of
a banned Ethiopian opposition movement,
is facing a death sentence imposed at a trial
held in his absence in 2009.
The announcement of the visit by British
Parliamentarians, yesterday, is in stark contrast to the efforts of Prime Minister David
Cameron, whose response to desperate pleas
for help from Mr Tseges family last year was
to write a letter to Ethiopias Prime Minister.
Jeremy Corbyn, vice-chair, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Human Rights, and Mr
Tseges constituency MP, will lead the delegation. He is a British citizen so there is no
reason on earth why the British government
should not take a very robust view on this,
he said. His constituent is a British national
in prison with no understandable, comprehensible or acceptable legal process thats
put him there.
And Clive Stafford-Smith, director, Re-

In a statement a Foreign Office spokesperson

said: The Ethiopians have not allowed us
further access than the two consular visits on
11 August and 19 December, though we continue in our efforts to secure this. The British government is deeply concerned about
his detention and is pressing the Ethiopian
authorities not to carry out the death penalty,
they added.
Six months after his capture, Mr Tseges family is finding it increasingly hard to cope. His
partner Yemi Hailemariam, mother of their
three children, said: We are very ordinary
family caught up in this very extraordinary
problem and we just dont know how to get
ourselves out of it. She added: It just breaks
my heart to think he will be celebrating his
60th birthday in three weeks time in prison.
The only contact she has had in six months
was a short telephone call Mr Tsege made
last month. He primarily focused on the
kids saying that I should not give them false
hope. I told him to keep well and strong. He
said he is fine. I asked him where he was, he
said he was still there [Ethiopia], she told
The Independent.
It is very, very, difficult to keep things going; I do have my low points. I try just to
block a lot of things out and just keep ploughing away - thats how Im trying to cope with
it, said Ms Hailemariam.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Ethiopian Embassy, London, claimed that Mr
Tsege belongs to a terrorist organization
seeking to overthrow the legitimate government of Ethiopia. He is being well treated
and torture is inhumane and has no place in
modern Ethiopia, they added.
Yet a recent report by Amnesty International revealed how political activists have been
tortured and killed by the Ethiopian security
forces in recent years.

Ethiopian Opposition Faces Difficulty in

Entering Upcoming Elections
By Martha van der Wolf, VOA

ADDIS ABABA -- Ethiopian opposition

parties say they are facing roadblocks
in their efforts to register for the May
elections. The parties say the National
Election Board is complicating procedures
for no good reason, and raising doubt that
the elections will be free or fair.
The Unity for Democracy and Justice
party has the only opposition member
in Ethiopia's 547-seat parliament. But it
is unclear if the party will be allowed to
participate in the May elections, as the
National Election Board has rejected UDJ
logos.
Wondimu Golla of the National Election
Board said it was not about the logos, but
about procedural rules.
According to their bylaws it says, the
president of the party shall be nominated or
elected by the general assembly. But they
nominate by some few persons, the high
officials there. So we oppose this. They
have to strictly follow the bylaws, their
own bylaws, said Golla.
The National Election Board has given
UDJ two weeks to organize a general
assembly, and if its conduct is approved the
party will be allowed to participate in the
May elections. But the UDJ has decided to
not hold another general assembly.
UDJ vice chairman Girma Seifu -- the only
member of parliament not affiliated with
Ethiopia's ruling party -- said the election
board's actions were not justified.
They do not have any legal ground or

moral ground or administrative guideline

to do these things. Because this is just
an interference just to put a block on our
active participation in the election, said
Seifu.
Voter registration in Ethiopia began last
week and up to 60 parties may run for seats
in the upcoming elections.
The Blue Party, formed in 2012, will be
contesting elections for the first time. Blue
Party chairman Yilkal Getnet said he was
pessimistic about the elections as the party
has repeatedly and unsuccessfully tried to
work with the election board on certain
issues.
"They are reluctant, and they did not give
us any positive report or signs to improve
these things. We did not get any signs that
improve the political climate. Now for the
coming elections to be free and fair we
need to discuss about the political climate,
to have a free media, to have international
observers to observe the election, and
including the budget sharing systems, and
so on, said Getnet.
During the 2005 elections opposition
parties won about a third of the seats,
but accusations of vote rigging led to
mass demonstrations in which at least
200 protesters died and thousands were
arrested.
The
ruling
Ethiopias
Peoples
Revolutionary Democratic Front has
been in power since the overthrow of the
military junta in 1991.

Ethiopia Sentences Three Britons to

Jail on Terrorism Charges
By William Davison

Bloomberg
An Ethiopian court sentenced three British
citizens to prison after finding them guilty of
trying to establish Islamic rule in the country
through acts of terrorism, according to a
Justice Ministry official.
Ali Adorus was sentenced to 4 1/2 years
in Ethiopian prison, while Somalia-born
Mohammed Ahmed and Ahmed Elmi were
each given jail terms of four years and eight
months, Fekadu Tsega, coordinator of the
federal center of prosecution, said by phone
yesterday from the capital, Addis Ababa.
They were accused of trying to
unconstitutionally change the government and
introduce Islamic government in Ethiopia by
terrorism, he said.
Ethiopia, where Christianity dates to about
the fourth century and is followed by about
60 percent of the countrys 94 million people,
sent troops three years ago into Somalia to help
African Union peacekeepers battle al-Qaedalinked al-Shabaab. The group has since 2006
been trying to overthrow the government in
Somalia and impose Shariah, or Islamic law,
there.

The militants have threatened to attack

Ethiopia in revenge for its military presence
in Somalia, as theyve done in other troopcontributing nations, including Kenya and
Uganda. Al-Shabaab carried out twin bombings
in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, in 2010 that
left more than 70 people dead and raided a
shopping mall in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi
in 2013, killing at least 67 civilians and security
personnel.
Terrorism Charges
The three British men were charged with
contravening the countrys 2009 anti-terrorism
law, Fekadu said. The prosecution and defense
have the right to appeal against the sentences.
Donors such as the U.S. and the United Nations

have said that Ethiopias 2009 anti-terrorism

law is used to silence legitimate dissent from
journalists, opposition politicians and other
critics of the state.
The men formed a militia in 2006 and first
entered Ethiopia in 2011, Fekadu said. The
court found they had links with a Yemen-based
section of the Oromo Liberation Front, a group
banned in Ethiopia thats fighting for more
autonomy for the Oromo, Ethiopias largest
ethnic group.
Adorus, who was arrested in January 2013
in Ethiopia, signed a false confession under
torture, according to Cage, a London-based
justice group,
Ali Adorus was brutally beaten, handcuffed
behind his back for extended period of time,
beaten on his hands with heavy wires, hooded,
electrocuted and denied toilet access, Cage
said in a statement on its website, citing a
UN petition. Without legal assistance, the
Londoner eventually signed a false confession
in Amharic, a language he does not even
speak.
The U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office
has provided consular assistance to Adorus, a
spokeswoman, who declined to be identified
in line with policy, said by phone from
London yesterday, without providing further
information.
The mobile phone of Communications Minister
Redwan Hussien didnt connect today when
Bloomberg News called him for comment,
while Shimeles Kemal, state minister for
communications, didnt answer a call to his
mobile phone.
