Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

PowerPoint allows students to grasp information and lessons about vowels more efficiently through slides
with audio, pictures, videos, engaging transitions and more rather than just printed text. PowerPoint supports
engagement in the learning environment for the classroom because you can’t just sit in front of the classroom
full of students repeating vowels over and over and expect them to understand, the use of technology in this
case makes the learning much more enjoyable and the students can go through the slides at their own speed
and practice allowed in private if desirable. The audio goes a long with the text while aids students who still
need practice with reading.

Lesson idea implementation:

For this lesson, I could either rent iPads and headphones for the class the day of lesson, let them go off and
work independently, saying the vowels and words aloud. After this, I will ask students to give me examples of
words with the long E and vowels with the short e. I could also set it as an online assignment for them to
complete at home, give me two examples of each and bring them to class written down the next day, or even
make their own PowerPoint to turn in if not too advanced for this age. For review, I could play the PowerPoint
movie presentation and have the class say them together. This lesson can be made into several different
lessons and approaches, but PowerPoint makes making the final project fun and easy for students and
teachers.

Reflective Practice: Not only can this be done in the classroom, this very well could be an assignment I post
online for the students to review at home. This is also very useful if a student is out of school or we have a
government lockdown. This PowerPoint can also be made available all year long for the students to
occasionally refer back to. Vowels are a very important strategy to learn in order to excel in reading higher
levels.
