➢She returned to Calcutta
➢Travelled to Holy Family Hospital, Patna to receive
basic medical training and ventured into the slums
➢Changed her traditional Loreto habit with a simple,
white cotton sari with a blue border
➢1948 : Teresa adopted Indian citizenship
➢Founded a school in Motijhil, Kolkata under a tree
➢1949 : A group of young women joined her

➢With no income, she begged for food and supplies
➢Tempted to return to the comfort of convent life
➢7 October 1950, Teresa received Vatican permission
for her diocesan congregation “Missionaries of
Charity”
यह "भखे, नंगे, बेघर, अपंग, अंधे, कुष्िरोगों, उन सभी लोगों की परवाह करे गा जो
समाज में सभी लोगों के सलए अवांतित, अप्रभाप्रवत, बबना सोचे-समझे, ऐसे लोग हैं
जो समाज के सलए बोझ बन गए हैं और इससे स्तब्ध हैं हर कोई" 16

➢1952 : opened her first hospice with help from
Calcutta officials. She converted an
abandoned, dilapidated, Hindu temple into
the ”Kalighat Home for the Dying”, free for the poor,
and renamed it Kalighat Home of the Pure Heart
(Kalighat Nirmal Hriday)
➢Faced stiff opposition from some locals.

➢She opened a hospice for those with leprosy, calling
it Shanti Nagar (City of Peace)
➢1955 : Teresa opened “Nirmala Shishu Bhavan”,
the Children's Home of the Immaculate Heart, as a
haven for orphans and homeless youth
➢All this was done by seeking donations and help Spit
➢1960 : Opened hospices, orphanages and leper
houses throughout India

started for Men
➢1965 : Expanded Overseas. Started First house
house in Venezuela with five sisters
➢1968 : Houses in Italy (Rome), Tanzania and Austria
➢1970 : Congregation opened houses and
foundations in the United States and dozens of
countries in Asia, Africa and Europe

➢1976 : Started the “Lay Missionaries of Charity”
➢1981 : Founded the Corpus Christi Movement for Priests
➢1983 : Suffered a heart attack in Rome in 1983 while she was
visiting Pope John Paul II
➢1984 : Founded “Missionaries of Charity Fathers”
➢1989 : Second aHeart ttack and received an artificial pacemaker
➢1991 : After a bout of pneumonia in Mexico, additional heart problems
➢1997 : MOC grown to have 4000 sisters (from a humble beginning of just
13 sisters)

➢August 1997 : She had malaria and heart failure
➢13 March 1997 : Mother Teresa resigned as head of the Missionaries of

➢At the time of her death, the Missionaries of Charity had over
➢4,000 sisters and
➢an associated brotherhood of 300 members
➢operating 610 missions
➢in 123 countries
