The Viking Age lasted roughly from the middle of the eighth century to the beginning of
the eleventh. The Vikings were the Germanic tribes of the Scandinavian Peninsula and Denmark.
They were invaders and travelled by boat as far as North America in the west and Central Asia in the
east from about 700 AD to 1100.
The word “Viking” meant “pirate raid” in the Old Norse language that was spoken in
Scandinavia around the same period. And the Vikings are certainly most famous for their
plundering.
The British territory experienced another wave of North Germanic invasions in the 8th
century. The Vikings came from the Scandinavian Peninsula looking for land to settle and also for
the purpose of plunder.
In the 9th century they conquered and settled the the north and west of
Scotland, and some coastal regions of Ireland.
In June 793 AD, on the coast of Northumberland located on the Little Island
Lindisfarne, also known as the Holly-Island, ruthless look armed warriors with swords
and shields from ships attacked the population and started massacres of the native people.
The attackers seized gold, silver, precious stones and other treasures from the monastery.
After many battles against English Kings, Vikings from Denmark occupied York
in 867. Both Nottingham and York became part of the Viking domination. York became
the capital of a Viking kingdom that lasted almost without interruption up to 954. At the
end of the century, Alfred the Great King of Wessex agreed with the Scandinavians after
a hard struggle that the southwestern part of which remained in the territory of Wessex,
and the north-east England was handed over to Danis, known as Danelaw.
The Scandinavians were the next people to influence the English language, which
is also visible from the large number of place names where they settled. The area in
which they settled was called the Danelaw. The Danelaw, in the Anglo-Saxon
Chronicle also known as the Danelagh (Old English: Dena lagu; Danish: Danelagen). The
term Dena lage is first recorded in the early 11th century.
The following list serves only illustrative purposes and is not in any way
exhaustive, as there are around 900 Scandinavian words in Modern English.

Russia-Sweden relations
Russia-Sweden relations date back to the 10th century; when Swedish
Vikings called Varangians founded new states that later evolved
into Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
Historically the two countries have been connected since ancient days,
when Swedish Vikings traded on the big Russian rivers and started settlements
that later became large cities such as Novgorod and Kyiv. These settlements
gave rise to mutual bonds that were also dynastical, as a Swedish king (Rurik)
started a dynasty that came to rule uninterruptedly from the 8th to 16th
century as depicted in the Nestors chronicle. Even the name Russia is said to
emanate from Sweden as the old name for Swedish Vikings from the east were
Ros.
