At the beginning of the tenth century part of the Northern Territory of France was
raided and colonized by the Vikings.
11
In 911 the Viking chief called Rollo accepted the ‘kind’ offer of a large area of Northern
France from the then king of France, Charles II (‘The Simple’) as part of a peace treaty. He hoped
that by giving the Vikings part of their land in France they would stop attacking.
Rollo and his ‘Nor(th) Men’ settled in this area of northern France now known as
Normandy. Rollo became the first Duke of Normandy and over the next hundred years or so the
Normans adopted the French language and culture.
At the beginning of the year 1066, Edward the Confessor was the king of England, but he was
not most powerful ruler and was childless as well.
William Duke of Normandy was a powerful ruler and distant relative of Edward
the Confessor. The English King promised William the throne of England after his death.
There was another candidate Harold, the son of Earl Godwin of Wessex. William claimed that the
throne had been promised to him by Edward. But the Witan, or Royal Council, did not want a
foreign ruler and recognized Harold as the new king.
12
When William of Normandy heard that Harold became king after Edward, on 14 October 1066
an invading army from Normandy defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings.
Most of the best English warriors were killed, including their King Harold. On
Christmas Day 1066 Archbishop Ealdred of York crowned William I, King of England,
William took over the government and gave ownership of many places to knights who had
supported him. The Norman invasion of England brought the tendency of Western European
culture. The Norman barons formed a brand-new ruling class, which spoke French and had French
13
customs as well. French replaced English, as the main language at court and in matters of law, and
French words were absorbed into English speech.
The areas of the English lexicon in which the influence of French was to be felt reflect the
spheres of life in which the French predominated in the early Middle English period. The
following lists are intended to give a brief impression of the richness of the Romance influence on
the Germanic stock of English vocabulary.
