QUESTION 1

A medium-cost condominium is proposed to be developed at Permatang Pauh in


Central Seberang Perai. The proposed condominium will have a 24-storey
condominium, featuring 395 residential units with a standard built-up size of 925 ft2.
Figure 1 shows the proposed condominium location which nearby the shop lots, the
commercial centre and the existing Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). As shown in
Figure 1, the proposed condominium that mark as yellow is located along Jalan
Permatang Pauh, right opposite UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang, Permatang Pauh
Campus.

Currently, the existing STP as illustrated in Figure 1 as red, was designed at 500PE.
It receives and treats sewage from the nearby two-storey shop lots (10 units on each
floor) (blue) and Pusat Komersil Permatang Pauh (green).

As the engineer, you need to;

a) Analyse the problems that may arise with the existing STP system when the
new condominium takes place later in the future. Propose possible solutions
to overcome the problems with justifications. (CO2-PO2) (10 marks)
b) Assess the current STP operating, whether it would be working efficiently when
the new condominium takes place. The justification should include the
Population Equivalent (PE), design sewage flow and existing sewer capacity.

c) Based on the design requirement for each stage of the sewage treatment
process, propose any replacement or upgrading of the existing each of the
treatment unit to cater for the new estimated amount of sewage from the
existing and future development. Justify your proposal related to treatment
efficiency, specifically on organic and nutrient removal, size of land available,
maintenance, operational cost and any other argument with proper citation and
references. (CO3-PO3) (10 marks)
d) Based on the proposal in b and c), design each stage of STP by considering
the standards and codes of practice in professional engineering. (CO3-PO3)
