Subject: Expression of interest for the Amazon’s Pathways Manager role
Dear Sir/Madam,
It gives me immense pleasure to express my interest in Amazon’s Pathways Manager program. As Amazon has established
itself as the leader in India’s budding e-commerce market, through its concentrated focus on customer and process excellence,
I believe Amazon will provide me with the right environment to reach the pinnacle of my all-round development. Amazon’s
Pathways Manager role has especially caught my attention as it would provide me with the opportunity to lead a team of
high-performing individuals while solving challenging problems related to mitigating supply chain risks. My versatile
experiences in Operations management, Supply chain management and Customer engagements at BPCL have made me a
fitting leader for the Pathways Manager role. In this letter, I would like to highlight a few instances highlighting my key
strengths relevant to this role.

Ownership mindset
When my dad once told me that taking ownership is all that matters, I took those words to be sacred. These words shaped
my attitude and drove my efforts when a labour strike was stopping me from delivering my objective. Although finding a
solution to the problem was my manager’s responsibility, I nevertheless took the initiative. I went beyond my scope to
convince my team, including my seniors to continue operations despite the strike. I took the lead, laid down the action plan
& guided my colleagues to complete each step of the process which was supposed to be done by the labourers. Under my
leadership, we completed the task at hand within the stipulated time frame. This successful move of mine sent a strong signal
to the union that they were not indispensable, and we used it to our advantage while negotiating the call off the strike.

Customer centricity
My experience in retail sales developed an instinct in me to always keep the customers first. As the logistics planning officer
for Kerala, I had to make several decisions for my customers while taking operation compliance roadblocks in my stride.
During one instance an outlet in Kochi was rendered non-operational due to a sudden breakdown of a dispensing unit. If an
additional truckload reached the outlet, the sales could be restarted, but as there were no planned shipments, any new
shipments would be delayed by the city traffic for at least 3 hours. For me personally, not being able to service my customers
for even 5 minutes hurt. Eager to find a quick resolution, I quickly pulled the latest dispatch data and with the help of the
tracking system, located the nearest loaded truck. I diverted the truck to the outlet and took post-facto approvals to save
time, and was subsequently appreciated for my proactive efforts by my seniors.

Talent Identification and Development

When I joined as the Area sales manager, I was handed over a tough sales area that had been unsupervised for the previous
3 months, and my first assignment was to revive a defunct outlet. I understood that a major part of the Herculean task could
be solved if I could find and mentor the right person to manage it. I quickly formulized key metrics to identify & develop a
capable ad hoc dealer. The diligent transformation of the outlet through dealer handholding gained me ₹36.42cr business,
yearly. This growth helped me mop-up a major volume and become the market leader in my sales area.

Innovation & Simplification

Asking the right questions has always helped me, and a decisive question I always ask myself is, “What are the advantages
and disadvantages of this process?”. This question always leads me to find bottlenecks, develop new paths, and consequently
simplify processes. As the logistics officer for Kerala, my main objective was to ensure smooth & consistent supplies to the
outlets across the state. When I took charge of the role, the situation was poor due to the deteriorating relationship between
BPCL and the drivers’ unions. After a few weeks in the role, I realized that the root cause of this deterioration was the unequal
monthly load distribution to the trucks. There was no concrete system to carry out this allocation. Hence, I developed a
performance-based automatic truckload allocation to outlets. Firstly, the model ranked the outlets in the order of priority
based on daily sales & stock availability. Then the trucks were selected based on the driver’s & truck’s track record which
includes conduct & distance run, & the outlet’s round-trip distance. The eventual equal distribution helped assuage the driver
unions, develop good relationships, reduce complaints and cut down strikes to “zero”.

With a strong operational background, ISB has been an inflexion point in my learning curve. Courses such as Logistics and
Supply Chain Management, Operations Management & Business analytics using Data mining have broadened my
understanding of the operations domain.

Amazon stands out for me with its customer centricity, fast-paced execution and collaborative culture. I believe that my
professional experiences in working across various verticals and geographies, and leading people from different economic,
cultural and social strata of the society, makes me a highly eligible candidate for the senior role of Pathways Manager. As
clearly demonstrated through my track record, Amazon’s leadership principles resonate with my work culture, and as a
result, drive my resolve to be part of Amazon.

I look forward to discussing my candidature and potential contributions to the firm in person. I am attaching my resume for
your kind perusal.
Yours Sincerely,
-S-
