LESSON NOTE
PROPERTIES OF WAVE
What is a wave?
Wave can be define as a disturbance which travels through a medium and transfers energy from
one point to another without causing any permanent displacement of the medium itself. Though
wave propagate in a medium but it is not always necessary that all waves will require a medium
for propagation, light waves can travel in a vacuum. Based on the way in which these waves
travel in a medium, they can be classified into two types of waves – Longitudinal and
Transverse waves.

Properties of Wave
Wave possesses some characteristics which before a substance can be classify as a wave, it
must have all the properties. Such properties are:
a. Wavelength
b. Amplitude
c. Period
d. Velocity
e. Frequency.

Let us now consider these properties one after the other.

i. Wavelength: this is the first properties of a wave which is defined as the minimum distance
covered by the Wave before it starts repeating itself. The wavelength is actually a length
parameter, hence, the SI unit of wavelength is meters. The sound wave is longitude in nature,
and the combination of the distance of one complete rarefaction and compression gives
wavelength. The symbol for the wavelength used is λ.
ii. Time Period: The Time period of a sound wave is defined as the time required for one
complete cycle. One cycle of the wave is defined by one complete rarefaction and compression
in the vibration. The time period is measured in seconds. The time period is also used to find
out the frequency of the wave, the reciprocal of the time period gives the frequency of the
wave.
