Reverse Power Protection Function (32R)

Protection Function Address 0131

Purpose

This function protects against a reverse power flow where

the grid powers the generator like a motor. This can overload the network
or cause mechanical damage to the prime mover.
Also, operation of torque overload devices needs to be determined hence
reverse power is therefore limited.

Note :

The maximum reverse power rating of the generator is approximately 30%, however
the relay should be set so as to trip in the event of shear pin failure. In which case
the generator would only draw approximately 1.2 % of it's power rating as no-load
losses.
This is then referred to the secondary side of the VTs and CTs using the formula:
PNo−load _ Loss U Machine I
Setting = * * Machine
PMachine U VT _ Pr imary I CT _ Ratio
Power Setting P> REVERSE Trip

The setting should be 50% of the machine motoring energy.

Siemens recommendation is that a 60/1 A core balance CT is used for this application.
Regardless of core balance CT used, ensure a sensitive input to address 5003 as
recommended above. Site commissioning will determine whether this is overly sensitive.

Generator Differential Protection Function (87G)

Protection Function Address 0120

Purpose

This function uses differential Current Transformers (CTs)

to protect the equipment between them in the case of a fault
within the zone of the CTs.

I-DIFF> Trip
A setting between 10-20% of Idiff / In is
recommended for generators.
I-DIFF> 0.1

Graph settings X 'd

The setting for Slope 1 depends on whether

the differential CTs are matched or not.

Unmatched CTs 0.25 Slope 1 0.25

Matched CTs 0.15

The Basepoints refer to the X-axis intercepts.

Base point 1 0 These values have been proven

Slope 2 0.5 and are recommended for use.
Base point 2 2.5

Stabilization

An external fault can cause short circuit currents which

saturate the CTs differently and simulate a differential curent.

This effect can be detected and is countered by adding in a

stabilising current. It is recommended not to alter these settings.

The Stability Time is the maximum lock-on period of the stabilising

current once conditions have moved from the Stabilisation Zone.

Stability Current 4 x I / In I-ADD ON STAB.

Stability Time 15 Cycles of period T I-ADD ON STAB.
