General Requirements For Welded Fabrication.

1. SCOPE
This Standard lists specifications, codes, and standards for materials, welding and
NDE requirements applicable to the fabrication of pressure or process containing
equipment including pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pressurised tanks,
fabricated casings for pumps and compressors and other equipment when specified
in the relevant requisition.
It is applicable to all welds, including repair welds, in or onto containment parts and
support skirts.

2. APPLICABLE CODES AND STANDARDS

The requirements of this standard are in addition to the codes listed below.
This standard shall not be used to supersede, delete or lower applicable code
requirements. Conflicting specification shall be brought to the attention of the
PROJECT ENGINEER, in general the most stringent specification shall apply,

The latest issue or revision of the relevant codes and standards shall apply as listed
below:

3. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
3.1 CONTRACTORS SPECIFICATION
The MAIN CONTRACTOR shall prepare an equipment fabrication specification
incorporating the requirements of DEP and other applicable specifications
referenced in Paragraph 2. Additional requirements specified herein shall also be
incorporated.

3.2 MATERIALS
For ferritic steels over 50mm thick at pressure welds, SUPPLIER shall specify
additional material requirements for avoidance of cracking, brittle fracture, lamellar
tearing and material defects. These shall include ultrasonic examination of plates
and forgings to ASTM A435 (on 100mm parallel paths), wet magnetic particle
examination of forgings to ASTM A508, and/or other proposals included in
SUPPLIER's bid and subject to agreement with BUYER.

3.3 CUTTING AND WELD PREPARATION

For copper/nickel and nickel based alloys, the joint area shall be scratch-brushed,
using a stainless steel wire brush reserved for such materials, followed by thorough
solvent cleaning. Both operations shall be performed immediately prior to the start
of welding. Solvent shall be free of chloride content.

3.4 ROLLING, FORMING AND BENDING

Processes for rolling, forming and bending of containment parts shall be stated in
the SUPPLIER' s drawings

The knuckle of cold formed heads shall be 100% MPI crack-detected.

Cold formed components with greater than 5% extreme fibre strain, including all
cold formed heads and heat exchanger U-tube bends, shall be solution heat treated.

3.5 WELDING PROCEDURE SPECIFICATION (WPS)

Specific joint designs shall be indicated on SUPPLIER drawings or on the WPS. As
a minimum, WPS shall indicate typical joint designs and typical weld deposition
sequences applicable.

The methods of applying, checking and controlling preheat and interpass

temperatures shall be indicated in the WPS.

3.6 POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT (PWHT)

WPS shall indicate all heat treatments to which the weld will be specifically or
incidentally subjected.

General Requirements For Welded Fabrication.

WPS shall state or refer to applicable PWHT procedures covering:

 Temperature range(s) and hold time(s)

 Methods and rates of heating and cooling. During field erection heating
shall be applied by electrical methods such as induction heating, resistance
heating.
 Location and number of thermocouples for control and recording.
 Extent of heating and insulation, if local or partial PWHT.
 Any precautions taken to avoid damage or distortion.

When stainless steels and non-ferrous metals are to be heat treated, steps shall be
taken to ensure that all surfaces are free from low melting point contaminants which
could cause embrittlement.

3.7 NON-DESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION (NDE) AND TESTING

Where the governing code is ASME VIII, or an API machinery code which
references ASME VIII, NDE shall follow DEP 31.22.20.31-Gen.

Where the governing code is ASME B31.3, or piping fabrication code, NDE shall
follow TOSS 38-002 & TOSS 38-002A

Alloy and non-ferrous welds shall be subject to chemical analysis representing each
WPS used on each item. The analysis shall comform to limits specified for the weld
deposit. Alternatively, for critical duties, the BUYER may specify more extensive in-
situ alloy checking of materials and welds.

Austentitic stainless steel welds, shall be subjected to a minimum of 3 ferrite checks

per weld, with a minimum of one check per weld, with a minimum of one check per
200mm length of manual welds. Checking shall be by "Ferritescope" or
"Permascope" and shall be performed before PWHT (if any). Ferrite levels shall be
in the range 3% to 8 %.
