TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
CONTACTS
1.0GENERAL: ........................................................................................................... 145
1.0 GENERAL:
The batteries, chargers and d.c. Control and distribution equipment shall conform to
the requirements of this section and, where appropriate, to the other sections of this
specification with regard to fuses, MCBs small wiring, instruments, earthing, cubicles,
isolating switches, etc.
2.0 STANDARDS:
Unless another standard is specifically mentioned in this specifications all materials
and equipment supplied and all design calculations and tests shall be in accordance
with International Standard Organisations (ISO) for mechanical equipment and
International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) recommendations for electrical
equipment.
b Ambient temperature: 50 C °
e Isokeraunic level: 10 – 18
4.1 B ATTERIES:
Batteries shall be of the nickel cadmium (NI-Cd) station type and shall be
rated to give the required capacity under the site environmental
conditions. In Accordance of Latest Issue of IEC & B.S Standards.
Cell boxes shall be manufactured from high impact polystyrene
translucent plastic of ample strength. Sufficient space shall be provided
beneath the plates to accommodate any deposit, which may accumulate at
the bottom of the cell without short-circuiting the plates. The life of the
cell shall not be limited by the accumulation of deposit.
Separators shall be provided between plates to prevent metallic
conduction whilst permitting electrolyte conduction. Separators shall be
suitable for continuous immersion in the electrolyte without distortion.
The Cell box shall be Marker clearly with max/min electrolyte level where
the batteries are to be installed in a separate battery room, the cells are to
be mounted on insulators carried on wooden stands and shall be arranged
in single rows of single or double tiers. Stands shall be treated with two
coats of acid resisting enamel of approved colour and arranged so that the
bottom of the battery shall not be less than 300 mm above the floor.
The copper connections between rows of cells and from the battery to the
through wall bushings shall be supplied and be of annealed copper rod of
adequate cross-section and supported on insulators of an approved type.
This copper rod shall be insulated by PVC or other approved taping or
sleeving. The arrangement of the copper work and connections shall be
subject to the Engineer’s approval. All necessary-fixing arrangements
shall be provided.
Where the batteries are to be installed in a separate battery room, each
battery shall be supplied with a set of through wall bushings in the wall.
The battery copper connections shall be connected to this set, together
with a wall mounted double-pole fuse box complete with high breaking
capacity fuses suitable for connection to the above mentioned battery
copper connections on the one side and to the cable to the battery
charger/A.C. supply.
Distribution board on the other. The rating of the above fuses shall be
such that they will discriminate clearly with the largest d.c. fuse or
miniature circuit-breaker used on the distribution cubicles.
Each battery shall be provided with the following accessories:-
a) cell testing voltmeter, with prods.
b) syringe hydrometers.
c) plastic filter bottle for distilled water.
d) cell bridging connector with plastic cap
e) instruction card.
f) battery record book.
The batteries shall be shipped dry and assembled on Site, filled with
electrolyte and the initial charge made.
Each charger shall have also a taper characteristic boost charging facility,
which shall be selectable by
Float/Boost/Auto Selector Switch, Isolation between AC & DC Circuits
should be provided & main protection for each circuit must be Installed
links situated in an accessible position. The transformers shall be capable
of carrying the specified continuous output on all tapings.
a) Charger indicating lamps, red for boost and white for float
charger in service. & No indication for Auto.
b) Voltmeter – input voltage 0 - 400 V AC
c) Voltmeter – DC battery voltage.0- 150 V AC
d) Ammeter – AC charger input current. 0-150A/AC
e) Ammeter – DC battery charge current. 0-150A/DC
f) Ammeter – Dc battery discharge current. 0-200 A/DC
g) Battery over-voltage alarm.
h) Battery under – voltage alarm.
i) Charger fail alarm to give remote alarm and local indication.
j) Battery system earth leakage alarm.
The minimum requirement for the charger fail device shall be the
detection of a.c. supply voltage failure. The voltage failure detecting shall
not operate on switching surges or transient loss of voltage due to faults
on the power system.
All fuses and links, circuit – breakers, switches and lamps shall be front –
of – panel mounted.
The larger compartment shall have 2 steel doors, and house the battery in
such a manner to avoid overheating during operation. The battery cells
may be located on shelves, and shall be clearly visible, and so positioned
to allow easy access during topping up. Provision shall be made to
minimise dust entering the compartment but shall allow for the free
discharge of gases during normal cycling of the battery. The battery leads
shall be capable of withstanding the continuous and short – circuit loads.
