B. Presenting 2. Presentation of New Lesson
examples/instances
of the new lesson a. Motivation
Before we start to our new lesson this
morning let us have first an activity. This activity is
called “EAT ME IF YOU WANT ME”. I will give
each of you an activity sheets and a piece of
bread then follow the instruction given in the
activity sheets. I will give you 2 minutes to chew
your food while answering your activity sheets and
we will do it all together. Am I understood?

Yes, ma’am!

Activity 1
“Eat me if you want Me”

Problem: What process happen when the food

is in the mouth?
What you need: Piece of bread
What you need to do:
1. Bite a piece of bread.
2. Chew the bread thoroughly. Observe
the structure or parts of the mount that
help in chewing the food.
3. Notice the changes in the taste and
texture of the bread as you chew it.
4. Record your observation
5. Swallow the bread and observed how
the bread is pushed down.
What have you found out:
Process Taste Texture
Start of chewing
the bread
After several
minutes of
chewing the bread

1. What changes occur in the bread after

several minutes of chewing?
____________________________
2. What is the role of saliva in the
changes of taste of bread?

3. How does the tongue help in
swallowing the food?

4. What process of digestion occurs in
the mouth?

5. Infer what could happen next if the
food is in the esophagus?

Time is up! Pass your Activity sheets in the center

aisle.
C. Establishing the 3. Purpose of the lesson
purpose of the
Lesson In connection with our activity, what do you
think is our lesson for today?

Yes, Allen.
Digestive System ma’am.
Well, that’s correct.

In order for us to be guided as we go along with

our discussion, we have our objectives. Everyone
read.
1. identifies the organs that make up the
digestive system;
2. trace the path of food as it is being
digested;
3. describes the coordinated function of the
organs of the digestive system;
4. illustrate how diseases of the digestive
system are detected and prevented.
D. Discussing New 4. Activity
concepts and
practicing new skills This time we will have another activity but you
need to group yourself into six.
Materials:
 Factsheets
 Scotch tape
 Cartolina
 Marker
Procedure:
1. Each group will be given factsheets.
2. Everyone must cooperate with their group
mate to determine and discuss the given
topic.
3. I will choose one representative from your
group to report your work in front.
4. Your scores will be based from our
scoring rubrics.
5. I will give you 3 minutes to discuss and
collaborate with your group and 2
minutes for placing the factsheets beside
the image.

In order for you to be guided in doing your task we

have these rubrics and this will be served as your
rubrics to the other activity.

front of the class.
(Students do the task.)

Leader of the group please paste your work in the

board and group reporter please be prepare.
(Students do the task.)
Les us start with group 1. Reporter please discuss
your work.

MOUTH
Food enters the gastrointestinal
tract trough the mouth, which is
lined with many nerve endings
that respond heat, cold, pain and
pressure.
The mouth is the beginning of
the digestive system.
The smell of food triggers the
salivary glands in your mouth to
secrete saliva, causing your mouth
to water. When you actually taste
the food, saliva increases.
The primary function of teeth is to
break the food into small pieces.
This process of chewing called
mastication, prepares the food to
That’s very good group 1. be swallowed.

Les us start with group 2. Reporter please

discuss your work.

ESOPHAGUS
Also called the throat, the pharynx is
the portion of the digestive tract that
receives the food from your mouth.
The esophagus is a muscular tube
extending from the pharynx. Food is
pushed through the esophagus and
into the stomach by means of a
That’s very good group 2. series of contractions called
peristalsis.

Les us start with group 3. Reporter please

discuss your work.

SMALL INTESTINE
The major part of digestion and
absorption occurs in the small
intestine. This is about 20 feet (6m)
in length and 1 inch (2.5cm) in
diameter.
Consists of 3 parts: duodenum,
jejunum, ileum.
Duodenum-chyme enters the
duodenum from the stomach.
Ileum- opens into the large
intestine.
Villi in the jejunum, increases the

digested food particles.

Les us start with group 4. Reporter please

discuss your work.

LARGE INTESTINE
It is about 2 ½ inches (6cm) in
diameter and 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8
m) long.
The main function of the large
intestine is the absorption of water
and the elimination of undigested
food.
The walls of the large intestine
absorb most of the water from the
undigested food and return the
water to the bloodstream. This
action is important in maintaining

Les us start with group 5. Reporter please
discuss your work.

STOMACH
Is a very muscular organ. The
outer layer is longitudinal; the
middle layer is circular; inner layer
oblique.
3 main activities that take place in
the stomach
1. Temporary holding or
storage of the food until it
is ready to enter the small
intestine.
2. Mixing of the food and
gastric juices together to
from a substance called
chime.
That’s very good group 5. 3. Control of the rate at
which food enters the

ANUS
The anus is the last part of the
digestive tract. It consists of the
muscles that line the pelvis (pelvic
floor muscles) and two other muscles
called anal sphincters (internal and
Very good group 6. external).

And now let us give a round of applause for

everyone for the job well done.
(Every student are clapping)
Now, let us go back to this giant human
statue.

system using this giant human statue?

I, ma’am.
Yes, Merry ross.

As we can see in this giant human statue

we have mouth in this organ we chew our
food we eat. Second the esophagus which
is the path of the food to the stomach. Third
was the stomach which is the storage of the
food. Next is the small intestine which is the
major part is to digest and absorb food. Next
is the large intestine the main function is to
absorb water and eliminate undigested food.
Lastly the anus it helps us waste the

Next question.
How would you describe the
coordinated function of the organs of the digestive
system?
I, ma’am
Yes,Mary joy.

The digestive organs coordinated in

digesting food for our body by following the
Very Good. step by step process.

How important each organ in the digestive

system?
Yes,Mae ann. I, ma’am

Each organ is very important by breaking

down foods for our body to get the nutrients

What if one of the organs of our digestive

system does not function well, what will be
happen?

Yes,Ann. I, ma’am

The possible result is that the digestion is

6. Application/ Valuing

G. Finding practical Now, I will show random pictures that will

application of show some diseases if we don’t take care of our
concepts and skills in Digestive system.
daily living

Diarrhea
-occur when food moves through the large
intestine too rapidly.
-cause of this includes: change in diet, food
poisoning and overeating.

Indigestion
-occurs when your body does not properly break
down foods.
-cause by stomach disorders, by eating too fast or
too much.
Haemorrhoids
-are a result of swelling of the veins in the lower
rectum and anus.
-cause by sitting a lot or people who supper from
constipation.

Heartburn
-occurs when acid content from the stomach backs
up into esophagus.
-backup can occur if the sphincter muscle between
esophagus and stomach does not close tightly.

Halitosis
-can result from disorders of the teeth or gums.
-cause is poor oral health care.

For us to be able to take care of our Digestive

System here are the tips:
Eat a variety of food.
Eat regular meals.
Make meals a relaxing time.
Eat enough but not too much.
Drink plenty of water.

7. EVALUATION
H. Evaluating Learning In ½ crosswise. How does the digestive
system break down food to nourish the body? You
will only have 3 minutes to answer.
