When you look at a picture that your friend shows you on his or her phone, do you notice who is in the
picture first or where the picture was taken first?
친구가 휴대 전화로 보여 주는 사진을 볼 때 당신은 사진 속에 누가 있는지를 먼저 보는가 아니면 사진이 찍힌 장소를 먼저 보는가?

Whichever you look at first, that perspective may reflect your cultural values without you being consciously
aware of it.
어느 쪽을 먼저 보든 , 그 시각은 당신이 의식적으로 인지하지 않는 문화적 가치관을 반영한다고 볼 수 있다.

These different points of view exist as personal and individual differences, but groups of people in a particular
neighborhood, city, or country may also have striking similarities.
이러한 다양한 관점은 개인적이고 개별적인 차이로 존재하지만 , 특정 동네나 도시 또는 국가에 있는 사람들의 집단 또한 현저한 유사성을 지닐

수 있다.

In her book titled East Meets West, author Yang Liu, who was born in China and moved to Germany when she
was 14, attempts to illustrate perspectives from her eastern and western heritages in several different contexts
through eye-catching illustrations.
중국에서 태어나서 14세에 독일로 이주한 작가 Yang Liu는 East Meets West라는 제목의 그녀의 책에서 시선을 사로잡는 삽화를 통해 여러 다른
맥락에서 그녀의 동양과 서양의 유산에 대한 시각을 설명하려고 시도한다.

They seem to open up a friendly discussion on the essence of differences not only between individuals but
also between groups or communities.
그것들은 개인 간의 차이뿐만 아니라 집단이나 공동체 간의 차이의 본질에 관해 마음을 열고 우호적인 토론을 하는 것처럼 보인다.

How Do You Solve Problems?

The picture above is an illustration of two different approaches to solving problems.

The picture on the left shows a straight line while the one on the right seems to follow a more meandering
path; however, they both end up reaching the destination.
왼쪽 그림이 직선을 보여 주는 반면에 오른쪽 그림은 좀 더 구불구불한 길을 따라가는 것처럼 보이지만, 둘 다 결국 목적지에 도착하게 된다.

In simple terms, the process of reaching a goal has a beginning and an end.
간단히 말하자면, 목표에 도달하는 과정에는 시작과 끝이 있다.

On the left, the most direct path can achieve a goal with the expenditure of as little energy as possible.
왼쪽의 그림에서는, 가장 직행으로 가는 길이 가능한 적은 에너지를 써서 목표를 성취할 수 있다 .

On the right, several other factors seem to require attention before the same goal is reached, which is why the
path is less direct.
오른쪽 그림에서는, 같은 목표에 도달하기 전에, 몇몇 다른 요소가 주의를 요하는 것처럼 보이고, 이는 그 길이 덜 직선인 이유이다.

Is the emphasis on the end result or on the process?

Putting it in other words, do you value efficiency or thoroughness?

다른 말로 하면 효율성에 가치를 두는가 , 철저함에 가치를 두는가?

The answer to these questions depends on the characteristics of the individuals and communities involved.
이 질문들에 대한 답은 관련된 개인과 공동체의 성격에 달려 있다.

How Do You Express Your Feelings?

당신은 자신의 감정을 어떻게 표현하는가?

Does the expression on your face always mirror how you actually feel as in the picture on the left?
당신의 얼굴 표정은 왼쪽의 그림처럼 당신이 실제로 어떻게 느끼는지를 항상 반영하는가?

Or do you often hide your true feelings in order not to hurt others around you?
아니면 당신은 주변에 있는 사람들에게 상처를 주지 않기 위하여 진심을 종종 숨기는가?

Do people express their feelings in different ways depending on the context?

맥락에 따라 사람들은 자신의 감정을 다른 방식으로 표현하는가?

In social situations, some people consider carefully how their displays of emotion might be interpreted by
others.
사회적인 상황에서, 어떤 사람들은 자신의 감정 표현이 다른 사람들에 의해 어떻게 해석되는지를 주의 깊게 고려한다.

Students have likely experienced similar situations after a big test.

학생들은 큰 시험을 치른 후에 아마 비슷한 상황을 경험했을 것이다.

If Nika remained calm after she got a perfect score on her exam while Manfred got 70% and cried in
disappointment, would the expression on each of their faces reflect how they feel?
만약 Manfred가 시험에서 70점을 받고 실망감에 울고 있는 반면 Nika가 만점을 받은 후 덤덤하게 있다면 , 그들의 얼굴에서 드러나는 표정이 그

Nika may not want to make Manfred feel bad, so she might try to hide the elation she feels by being cool
about it.

However, Manfred may simply display what he feels at the moment.

A "blue" person may be critical of Nika and understanding of Manfred because Nika is not being honest while
Manfred is being genuine.

The opposite may be true from the "red" perspective: Nika is respecting others' moods while Manfred is
making classmates feel uncomfortable.
‘빨간’ 사람 관점에서는 반대일 수 있는데, Manfred는 반 친구들을 불편하게 만드는 반면 Nika는 다른 사람들의 기분을 존중하고 있다.

A simple way to look at the distinction is to ask if it's more important to honestly let feelings show or if it's
more important to consider the feelings of others.
그 차이를 보는 단순한 방법은 솔직하게 감정을 보여주는 것이 더 중요한지 아니면 다른 사람들의 감정을 고려하는 것이 더 중요한지 물어보는

것이다.

These perspectives on social manners, when repeated, may become a normal cultural practice.
사회적인 예의에 대한 이러한 관점은 그것들이 반복될 때 일반적인 문화적 관습이 될 수 있다.

Which Is More Important, the Individual or the Group?

개인과 단체 중 어느 것이 더 중요한가?

The picture below shows the different perspectives of the role of a person in society.
아래 그림은 사회에서 개인의 역할에 대한 다른 시각을 보여 준다.

Is the individual more important as the picture on the left shows, or is the group more important as shown on
the right?
왼쪽에 있는 그림이 보여 주듯이 개인이 더 중요한가 , 아니면 오른쪽에 표시된 것처럼 집단이 더 중요한가 ?

Some people see themselves in the context of a group.

일부 사람들은 그들 스스로를 집단이라는 맥락 안에서 본다.

They think themselves to be part of a larger whole, placing importance on harmony and relationships with
others, possibly at the cost of their own personal recognition.
그들은 아마도 자신의 개인적 인정을 희생하면서 스스로를 다른 사람들과의 조화와 관계를 중요시하는 더 큰 전체의 일부라고 생각할 것이다.

Other people may emphasize individual talent and personal abilities that stand out beyond the group.

If a group member has a good idea, should she suggest the idea to the group?

A "blue" person may be praised for having the creativity to make a goal easier to reach.
‘파란’ 사람은 목표를 더 쉽게 달성할 수 있게 하는 창의력을 발휘하여 칭찬받을 수 있다.

On the other hand, a "red" person might consider how the new idea affects the group dynamics and take into
account the possibility of friction between members during a change.
한편 , ‘빨간 ’ 사람은 새로운 아이디어가 집단 원동력에 어떻게 영향을 주는지, 그리고 변화가 일어나는 동안 구성원 간의 마찰 가능성을 고려할

것이다.

Generally speaking, even though differences are what makes each culture unique, they may also be barriers to
understanding.
일반적으로 말해서, 차이점이 각 문화를 특별하게 만드는 것이라고 해도 이해하기에는 어려운 장벽이 될 수도 있다.

Yang Liu's book isn't about ranking cultural differences in terms of which is better.
Yang Liu의 책은 문화적 차이를 어떤 것이 더 좋은지를 기준으로 순위를 매기는 것이 아니다 .

The book is designed to show that there may be other ways to look at the world.
그 책은 세상을 보는 다른 방법이 있다는 것을 보여 주기 위해 쓰였다.

Maybe it's easier to think of culture like taking photographs.

어쩌면 사진 촬영처럼 문화를 생각하는 것이 더 쉬울 수도 있다.

The individual photographer uses a variety of different methods to capture what she feels is the most
important aspect of a scene.
개개인의 사진사는 한 장면에서 가장 중요한 부분이라고 느끼는 것을 포착하기 위해 다양한 방법을 사용한다.

Is it the lighting or the angle?

그것이 조명인가, 아니면 각도인가?

Should there be people in it or not?

거기에 사람이 있어야 할까 , 없어야 할까?

Is a close-up or a wide shot better?

Likewise, cultural understanding comes from being open to the idea that differences may come from putting
value on different aspects of life.
마찬가지로 문화적 이해는 삶의 다양한 측면에 가치를 부여함으로써 차이가 생길 수 있다는 생각에 마음을 여는 것에서부터 시작된다.
