NARRATIVE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTREPORT ON NATIONAL READING MONTH

AND BOOK WEEK CELEBRATION 2023

In celebration of the book week with the theme, "“Read, Reread, Relive!” and
National Reading Month 2023, Apalit High School, headed by the English Department,
conducted a series of activities which started with the Kick-off Program on November 6 and
ended with the Culminating Activity on November 29, 2023.
During the Kick-off Program which was held after the Flag Raising Ceremony (both in
the morning and afternoon shifts), the English teachers, headed by Mrs. Soledad E. Lacson
(Master Teacher I in English) Mrs. Rassel M. Pineda (Head Teacher -English) and Mrs. Rea C.
Reyes (English leader) with their supportive principal, Sir Arnel Pablo L. Agustin, discussed the
Reading Month theme, importance of Reading and the program matrix.
Sir Agustin in his opening message, emphasized the value of reading, encouraged
students to love reading and asked the teachers' support in all the activities prepared by the
English Department. One of these was the "Share-a-Book" Project on which all students,
teachers, non-teaching personnel and stakeholders were encouraged to share or donate a book for
Art's Book Pantry.
To avoid disruption of classes as indicated in the DepEd Order (DO) No. 9 S. 2005, all
the activities done were mostly classroom-based and contests for the morning session (Grades 7,
9 and 11) were held in the afternoon while the contests for the afternoon session (Grades 8, 10
and 12) were held in the morning.
The first of these activities was the project "D.E.A.R." or Drop Everything and Read,
held on November 24, on which all students, teaching and non-teaching personnel had
simultaneous reading of their chosen reading material (9:00 a.m. for the morning shift and 1:00
p.m. in the afternoon).
To enhance the reading, writing, speaking, drawing and artistic skills of the students, the
English Department conducted the following activities:
a. Big Book and Read-a-thon for Grade 7, held on November 27 . The Big Book making is
a group activity on which all Grade 7 sections participated but only the Best Big Book
per section was chosen by their English teacher to represent their class. Grade 7-Apollo
7-Aphrodite and 7-Hera got the first, second and third place respectively.Haiku writing
making Contest for Grade 8 held on November 25, at 9:00 a.m. on which the participants
write a haiku connected to the book week celebration. The 3rd place won by a students
from 8-Genesis while the 2nd and 1st place were bagged by the representatives from 8-
Exodus..
b. Reader’s Theater with the piece "Just One Question”(Group) for Grade 9, held on
November 27 at 1:30 p.m. Fifteen students represented each section and the sections who
got the first, second and third place, respectively, were the, 9-Wisdom, 9- and 9-
Sincerity.
c. Essay writing for Grade 10 which was held on November 23 at 10 a.m. There were two
representatives per section and the topic they wrote about was "The Read, Reread, Relive
the love of Reading in the Country's Better Future". The winners in this contest were
Salwa Hadjisamim (10-Augustus), Hanna Kate Carlos (Constantine) and Aslima
Abdul(10-Caesar) who got the first, second and third place respectively.
d. Spoken Word Poetry for Grade 11-12, in writing their own piece with the theme, "II
read, I spoke, I conquered", and was held on November 12 at 10:00 a.m in AHS
Computer Laboratory Winners are:1st- Aguilar, Rinoa Julia (11-Pelican)2nd-
Serano, Kelcriza (12-Philippians) and 3rd- Pangan, Cy-Reign (11-Raven.
e. For the another contest in grade 10 (group), Video Advocacy Making, with a
themer “Making Reading A Habit”, the winners are 10-Caesar, 10-Augustus and
10-Constantine who got the first, second and third place, respectively, were the, 9-
Wisdom, 9- and 9-Sincerity.

Aside from these activities, all Grade levels from Grade 7 to Grade 12 had their musical
variety shoe in their respective classes on which they presented their movies adapted from book
stories. The select grade 7 students presented an enchanting performance of “The Little
Mermaid”. Grade 8 select students presented a musical play Trolls, Enchanto for Grade 9
students, “Wednesday” for grade 10, Frozen for grade 11 and “Mulan” for grade 12.
The Culminating Activity for the Reading Month was held on November 29, on which all the
winners in all the activities were awarded with certificate. The program was held at 1:30 p.m.
Those who won first place in the Reader’s Theater and poken Word Poetry had their repeat
performance but the most awaited moment was the presentation of the Musical Play/Variety
Show participants from each grade level . Programs started with an opening prayer led by Mrs.
Nora Pangan and ended with closing remarks by Mrs. Rassel M. Pineda (Head Teacher -
English), good messages from the Master Teacher in English, Mrs. Soledad E. Lacson .Miss
Cherrie Joy Reyes (Grade 12 English Teacher) emceed the program.
Indeed, the National Reading Month celebration was a huge success as the English language
teachers were not only able to instill in the minds of the students the value of reading but were
also able to discover, and enhance and showcase the talents, skills and abilities of the students.
The joint efforts, unity, cooperation and coordination among all English language teachers both
in the Junior and Senior High School, and all the other subject teachers and advisers, with the
full support of their principal, Sir Arnel Pablo L. Agustin made the month-long celebration
successful and well-organized.
