Well Testing: Tutorial 3

Q1: Analysis of a well test conducted in an appraisal well in an

undersaturated oil reservoir gave the following results:
Effective permeability = 155 mD
Skin Factor = 5
From the well test results and additional information given below determine
the percentage increase in the well PI (Productivity Index) if the skin factor
was reduced to zero.

Additional Information
Oil flow rate, qo = 3450 stb/d
Initial Reservoir Pressure, Pi = 8500 psia
Final Flowing Pressure (stable), pwf = 7665 psia
Wellbore radius, rw = 0.33 ft
Formation thickness, h = 87 ft
Oil viscosity, µ = 0.87 cp
Oil Formation Volume Factor, Bo = 1.18 rb/stb

Answer:

Q2: The data summarized below were recorded during a pressure drawdown
test from an oil well. Estimate the effective permeability to oil and the skin
factor using the graphical analysis technique for a constant-rate flow test.

Q = 250 STB/D pi = 4,412 psia

h = 46 ft = 12%
rw = 0.365 ft B = 1.136 RB/STB
ct = 17 x 10-6 psi-1 m = 0.8 cp

Answer:

1. First, we plot flowing bottomhole pressure, pwf, as a function of time on semilog

paper.

Insert best fit straight line

The slope, m, of the resulting straight line is the difference between values of pwf one log
cycle apart, or

3
Effective permeability to oil is estimated using the absolute value of the slope,
m, of the line,

Noting that P1hr = 3,540 psi, we calculate the skin factor

As we shall discuss later, a positive value of skin factor indicates a flow

restriction (i.e., damage) around the wellbore.

Q3: An oil well was tested at a constant production rate of 600 stb/d for 600
hours. From the pressure and reservoir data given below calculate the
effective permeability, skin factor and percentage increase in well PI if the
skin factor is reduced to zero (assume a stabilised bottom hole flowing
pressure was reached at t = 600 hours)

Reservoir Data

Oil flow rate, qo = 600 stb/d

Initial Reservoir Pressure, Pi = 6500 psia
Wellbore radius, rw = 0.316 ft
Formation thickness, h = 280 ft
Porosity, Ø = 28 %
Oil viscosity, µ = 1.25 cp
Bo = 1.23 rb/stb
