THIS year, World Immunisation Week (April 24-30)
celebrates 50 years of the Expanded Programme on
Immunisation (EPI), recognising collective efforts to
improve countless lives by protecting them from
vaccine-preventable diseases. Indeed, the world has
come a long way from the time when the death of a
child seemed inevitable. But we have not reached the
finish line yet. More work needs to be done to protect
every child from disease and disability.

The EPI’s 50th anniversary presents us with an
opportunity to celebrate the achievement as the world
stands at the threshold of eradicating a human
pathogen globally. However, while the number of
children affected by polio since 1988 has now been
reduced by 99 per cent in Pakistan, the latter is still one
of the two countries where polio is endemic.

Clayborne’s book contains nuggets of inspiration.

Dr King, in one of his early addresses, justified his

demand for racial equivalence, saying: “We are not
wrong in what we are doing. If we are wrong, the
supreme court is wrong. If we are wrong, the ‫ڈاکتر کیگ نے ا ٹیے ایک اٹیدائی حظاب میں یسلی مساوات کے ا ٹیے مظا لیے کو درست فرار‬

Pakistanis are not wrong in loving their country, even
though they often despise its various governments. Nor

which has been earned, it would seem, by any means
necessary. But the question to now ask is how durable it
is, because despite all the strengths it enjoys, the set-up
‫ کسی تھی طرح‬،‫ ایسا لگیا ہے‬،‫ جو کمائی گتی ہے‬،‫یہ ٹیے یانے خانے والے اشنحکام کی نییادئں ہیں‬
increasingly seems inadequate to the task before it.

There is a calm in economic numbers, but below the
surface trouble is brewing. The industrial base of the
country is shutting down. The foreign exchange market
is seeing the most directed period of its history in recent
times, with repatriation of profits practically halted for
foreign investors, opening and settlement of LCs for
trade purposes heavily regulated, and the State Bank
buying massive quantities of dollars from the market at
prices it dictates itself.

The MNAs and MPAs will tell him they did not contest
the elections to be abused and humiliated in their

What can help is the activation of external inflows. Very
little is known about what may be coming from abroad.

Absent this, a tough test is now looming for the new
‘same-page’ dispensation.

Responding to climate-triggered disasters in countries

like Pakistan, the initiative has encouraged the inclusion
of a clause that would stipulate a temporary suspension
of interest payments on debt. The additional financial
resources for rebuilding, it is argued, should be in the
form of grants, instead of loans.
