Joint Variation
Lesson 3
Illustrate Situations, Translate Statements and Solve Problems Involving
Joint Variations
Joint Variation
Joint Variation
- Is a variation where a quantity varies
directly as the product of two or more other
quantities.
- The statement “z” varies jointly as “x” and
“y” is represented by the equation:
z = kxy
where:
k = constant of variation

Joint Variation
Situations illustrating Joint Variation:
1. Formula of the Area of a rectangle.
(Arectangle = lw)
2. Formula of the volume of a rectangular prism.
(Vrectangular prism = lwh)
3. Formula of the area of a triangle.
(Atriangle = ½bh)
4. Formula of the volume of a Pyramyd
(Vpyramid = 1/3lwh)

Activity 1: Translate the following statements into a Joint Variation
equation

1.The force (F) applied to an

object varies jointly as the mass
(m) and the acceleration (a).

F = kma
Activity 1: Translate the following statements into a Joint Variation
equation

2.The volume (V) of a pyramid

varies jointly as the area of the
base (b) and the altitude (h).

V = kbh
Activity 1: Translate the following statements into a Joint Variation
equation

3. The area (A) of a triangle varies

jointly as the base (b) and the
altitude (h).

A = kbh
Activity 1: Translate the following statements into a Joint Variation
equation

4. The appropriate length (l) of a

rectangular beam varies jointly as
the square of its width (w) and its
depth (d).

l = kw d 2
Activity 1: Translate the following statements into a Joint Variation
equation

5. The electrical voltage (V) varies

jointly as the current (I) and the
square of the resistance (R).

V = kIR 2

Solving Problems involving Joint Variation
Ex. 1: z varies jointly as x and y and z = 60 when x = 5
and y = 6. Find z, when x = 7 and y = 6

S.Y. 2020 - 2021
Solving Problems involving Joint Variation
Ex. 2: z varies jointly as the square root of the product of
x and y. If z =3 when x = 3 and y = 12, find x when z = 6
and y = 64.

Solving Problems involving Joint Variation
Ex. 3: The weight W of a cylindrical metal varies jointly as its
length l and the square of the diameter d of its base. If W = 6kg
when l = 6cm and d = 13cm, find l when W = 10kg and d = 2cm.

Solving Problems involving Joint Variation
Ex. 4: The area A of a triangle varies jointly as the base b and
the altitude h of the triangle. If A = 65cm2 when b = 10cm and h
= 13cm, find the area of a triangle whose base is 8cm and whose
altitude is 11cm.

Solving Problems involving Joint Variation
Ex. 5: The amount of gasoline used by a car varies jointly as the
distance travelled and the square root of the speed. Supposed a
car used 25 liters on a 100 km trip at 100km/hr. About how
many liters will it use on a 192 km trip at 64km/hr?
