Q. How the project started?
The Bird People was created between by a group of friends interested

in making Films. We all studied the art of filmmaking at college and we
all had big ambitions to make stories out of what only exists in our minds.
This was the dream, and this is why we begun producing films. Our first
feature length film was Amar a Morir (2009), the biggest Mexican blockbuster of 2009, and receiver of various international awards such as Best
Latin Film at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and Best New
Director at Guadalajara Film Festival.
Following this big success, we ventured further into the Business of
making movies, and that is why in 2012 we produced the first edition of
the Riviera Maya Film Festival in Cancun. We were interested in connecting more with the industry to understand how the business worked in order
to be able to continue making movies.
We quickly realized we needed to diversify and that is why on mid 2012
we opened The Bird People Rentals, a specialized equipment rental house
and the anchor to making all our projects a reality. The first one would be
a location scouting in the hidden ex-kingdom of Bhutan in the Himalayan
region. A place I could only visit with my good friend, and who would later
take me to the beautiful paradise of Myanmar, Juan.
On this trip to the snowy mountains, Juan and I began discussing possible projects, and it was there that the possibility opened up for us to work
together. The sad thing was that back home, things were unsettling so I had
to put on hold all these ideas and return to continue setting the building
blocks of The Bird People.
At this time I met Andres Palma, my now very important partner, and
we discussed the idea to open a post-production company dedicated to
the creation of 2D and 3D animation, and vfx. He is a man of action so
within months we opened Poliedro VFX, a small animation studio based
in Mexico City. As things turned out, within a few weeks of opening our
little studio we were contacted from L.A. by MPC/Technicolor who where
looking to open a creative hub in Mexico City and where considering us
as their strategic partner. We were speechless at the sight of an opportunity to work with two of the most important worldwide enterprises in our
business so we took the trip to L.A., and gave it a go. As it turns out, we
where a perfect match, and in a matter of months, we were setting up shop
in Mexico City.
Parallel to this huge ordeal, we also began producing films again. We
began filming a three movie slate alongside Cacao Films, resulting in
LUTO (2013) and Me Quedo Contigo (2014), both which have generated incredible interest from film critics and international festival, specially
because they are some of the best examples of extremely well made films
with a very small budget. We also began pre-production of our two flagship
projects Garra de Jaguar and Las Tinieblas. Garra had the great success of being crowd funded and generally very well accepted by investors,
sponsors and production funds, as is Las Tinieblas, which is one of the
2014 Cannes Film Festival worldwide films to expect.
All of this where a huge step for us, it meant we were now in the big
leagues. It also meant that it was time to create, and as always, when the
circumstances generate, possibilities appear. To me, they appeared in the
form of an e-mail from Juan inviting me to document a small ceremony
in the Irrawaddy Delta region of Myanmar. Like everything in life, when
these opportunities arrive, you will either take them or let them pass, for
me, I took it without hesitation, and began to prepare for what would be an
esoteric, wonderful and inspiring

experience.
Q. How are you interested in

Burma?
There were mainly two reasons

that drew me to Myanmar;
The first was my recollection of
being there as a kid. My mother
and father took me there in the
middle of the 90s when I was like
7 or 8. I didnt remember much, but
every time I recollected those little
fragments of that experience I had
a beautiful sensation. Not all places
give me this type of feeling, Burma
does.
Secondly, the opportunity arose,
and it wasnt just any trip to Burma; I was invited by my dear friend
Juan. I dont know if I should share
his story for it is not really mine to
share, but it is a very beautiful tale.
He is a travel agent and Dhamma
practitioner of many years, one
of the main reasons he organizes
tours to Buddhist countries. He was
in Yangon when Cyclone Nargis
occurred and as a result, he ended
up traveling to the Irrawaddy Delta
region, to places where the international relief did not arrive, thus,
places that where heavily destroyed
and had no outside help. One of
these places was the small town
where most of the film was shot
(unfortunately I cannot disclose
the name of the town). Juan says
that something happened during
that visit that changed his life, he
told us that as he arrived to this
little town, a midst all the destruction, between fallen houses and
trees, he saw a little school. A tiny
3 walls classroom with no celling,
no windows and no doors that was
barely standing. And inside this
classroom he saw 30 or so kids of
all ages attending class, all of them
putting extreme attention and devoting themselves entirely to their
studies. This amazed Juan because
he felt that no matter what had
happened, no matter that most of
this kids lost their homes and their
loved ones, some of them los their
entire families!! But no matter, they
were focused on transcending that
situation and on rebuilding their
lives, they where focused on their
future. This is why, after seeing
this, Juan returned home and with
a lot of hardship gathered money
and donated a new school to this
community. The people where
so grateful and hardworking that
once the school was finished Juan
gathered more money and donated
the new monastery, then a clinic,
and finally the statue of the Buddha
for the new monastery. This is what
I went to document, the arrival of
The Buddha to this small town, and
the chain of events that took place
surrounding his arrival.
Q. How many times have

you ever been in Burma?
This past November I completed

my third visit to Burma (I just realized I sometimes call it Myanmar
and sometimes Burma sorry for
this, its a habit I developed while I
was there).
Q. How long have you been
in Motion Pictures?
I started in 2006 when the pre-production of Amar a Morir began, so 8

years.

Q. How do you think about Burmese culture?
I love Burmese culture. Actually, the film centers around some of the
particularities of your beautiful and centuries long culture and traditions.
While I was there for the first shooting, my immediate instinct was to
focus the storyline in the countrys political situation. This I think will be
the focus of most films to come about Burma. But when I began connecting with our hosts, I began realizing that the political situation was the
very gross exterior of an otherwise incredibly deep and unique cultural
personality. And so I began searching deeper and deeper for all the things
that constructed these incredibly gentile and loving people. Of course I
quickly realized the center of everything was the teachings of The Buddha,
the Dhamma. For those who wonder, Burma is said to be the place where
the traditionally purest source of Buddhism exist, and this is something
embedded in the society, a thing that nowadays is very rare. Most Buddhist
cultures have been eradicated; Indian Buddhism was destroyed many times
until barely none exists; Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism where annihilated
during the cultural revolution; Theravada Buddhism in southeast Asia was
either destroyed or has become very superficial and theistic-like. But in
Burma, a very strange thing happened which didnt destroy the tradition,
but instead preserved it in a truly majestically way.
Q. Have you ever experience Burmese Art? What kind of

Burmese art you recognize well?
I am not very learned in Burmese art, although I love sand painting, I

have a couple of very beautiful Buddha sand paintings at home. I also love
the Burmese iconography, like the Nat cards, the posters of the Buddha,
and all of those handcrafts of the Mahamuni, Shweddagon, Kyaikhityo,
etc all very colorful!
I also found extremely gifted woodworkers, I actually saw some of the
most beautiful wooden statues of Buddha that I have ever seen.
And of course I love the Burmese Theravada style of painting, sculpture
and architecture, both classic and modern. Bagan itself is an astonishing
piece of art, all of it as is the Sitagu International Buddhist Academy.
Q. What are the things that inspired you to create " The Bird People"?
The Story of the Bird People I think I covered in the first lines, but Ill
tell you what inspired me to create this documentary.
For me, making films was always about crafting something that only
existed in my mind, and making it solid for everyone to see. Creating a
universe. This is why I love Science Fiction, because you are experiencing
a world that does not physically exists, yet, by some visual miracle you are
actually watching it and emotionally engaging in it. In a sense, this is also
why I love the Dhamma, because our life is the same as that movie, it is an
experience that although not actually real, we physically and emotionally
engage in it as if it where true and permanent.
It is strange and yet very logical.
In the case of Myanmar, at the beginning my whole purpose was to
make a film where people could actually experience a little grasp of the
incredible beauty I was seeing and feeling. And as it evolved, it grew from
physical beauty to cultural beauty, to loving persons, to esoteric wonders
and it ended up being a poem about Burma. I guess that is my ultimate
aspiration, to show Burma through my eyes in a way that the documentary
pays homage to your homeland.
Q. Your greetings to Burmese people living in US and those

who living all over the world?
I would like to say that although I am extremely unfamiliar with everyones circumstance and experiences, I can, in a very little way imagine how
hard it must be to have to leave your own country and everyone and everything you cherish and love behind. It must be extremely difficult to try and
blend into a culture and a pace of life so different from the one you are use
to. This is a sad thing that many people from different countries experience
and have to go thru.
But it is my humble opinion that this great change Burma is going thru
will one day in the near future develop into democracy. It is my believe
that your beautiful country is advancing into its future at an accelerated
pace, and with this, change and freedom are beginning to appear. We all
know that for the time being, the political changes have been very polluted
by the interest of those still in power, but I honestly saw hope in the eyes
of those I met there, and where there is hope, there is possibility. So my
very personal message to all of you is to keep hope alive by engaging in
your culture and tradition, keep Burma alive in yourselves and be patient,
Burma and all Burmese people are in the dawn of a very beautiful and
bright feature.

uman capital is a crucial element for any nations progress and

development. Education is the primary mechanism for escalating
human resources and accumulating human capital. Therefore, a quality
public education system is one of the most important components for a
nations social and economic outcome.
Knowing how important education is to a nations growth, it is disheartening to see the current state of the Myanmar public education system.

Girls Fight for Education
To achieve education equality and quality for all, the Myanmar government is faced with three distinct but related challenges: 1) ensuring
all children are able to attend school; 2) ensuring enough qualified and
motivated teachers with proper support structures; and 3) preparing the
education system to deliver quality education, especially in rural and ethnic
areas. The Myanmar public education system needs serious funding and
investment to tackle these challenges.
After more than 50 years of neglect and lack of government investment,
institutions of education in Myanmar are in despair. Today the government
continues to underfund the education sector. The 2013-14 national budget
allocated 4.4% to education while the military budget was 20.8%. In comparison, Vietnam spends 20% of its national budget on education the
highest within the ASEAN countries. Myanmar is seriously behind. Even if
the government increases its education budget to the level of Vietnams,
it may not be enough because of the magnitude of the challenges.
This is when support of non-governmental private and international
organizations can be very helpful. It is on this premise that Suu Foundation was established to tackle these challenges.
We, at Suu Foundation, would like to invite all overseas Myanmar to
join us in this effort and to be a part of this historical journey. Education
is the fundamental instrument for developing human resources, creating equal opportunity, economic growth, and an informed citizenry. An
educated population is a capable population and, as such, they will be
able to develop novel solutions to many of the unique problems that are
plaguing Myanmar.

our combined efforts on revamping the Myanmar public education system,

Everyone has a right to have
an education and yet some still
dont have a right. Mostly girls
have not had a good education
in some countries. Some countries dont allow girls to have an
education at all. For an example,
Malala Yousafzai was a Pakistani
pupil who had gotten shot by the
Islamic Taliban Group for having
an education and yet she survived
and is now fighting for a girls
right to have an education. Malala
is truly a great inspiration to me
for standing up to the people who
threatened to kill her and for being
a brave, fearless lady and fighting
for girls rights. She is not only an
inspiration to me, but hopefully to
others too.
Education is a very powerful
thing. It has been so powerful that
recently, in Nigeria, things have
gotten worse for the girls that have
been having an education. Over
200 girls have been kidnapped
by an Islamic terrorist group that
does not believe that girls should
have an education. Boko Haram,
the Islamic terrorist group ruler
has kidnapped those girls. Some
of these girls have been sold as
slaves; some are being tortured,
etc. People are protesting for these
girls to be returned home (#BringBackOurGirls).
Education shouldnt be a privilege, but a right Shakira once
said. Education isnt a luxury, but
many people treat it like a luxury.
It is time that we fight together for
the many girls that have been kidnapped, shot, killed, etc. We need
to make a change in the world
and we can help stop this crisiss
happening each day because of
education. There are many people
out there that are trying to make
a change, but unfortunately not
enough and it is about time we
speak up for all of these girls suffering because of their need of an
education. So this is why I will say
help the world have a better and
bright future. Let there be less violence. Let there be freedom and
rights for all. We are all equals,
nothing more, nothing less. We all
have rights so lets fight for others
rights.
