2. A rectangle has a length of 15 dm. If the area is 120 dm2, then the width is?
Solution:
length x width = Area
15 dm xwidth = 120 dm2
Width = 120 dm2
15 dm
= 8 dm

Answer: 8 dm

3. What is the area of the figure below?

20 m
Solution: 20 m
Divide the figure into 3 rectangles

35 m
Area of 1st rectangle
A = 20m x 35m
= 700 m2

Area of 2nd rectangle 75 m

A = 20m x 35m
= 700 m2

Area of 3rd rectangle

A = 75m x 20m

QUESTIONNAIRES FOR MATH COMPETITION

GRADE 7 – 10
Grade 7
EASY: Find the perimeter of a regular decagon with side 8 in.
Solution:
A decagon is a polygon with ten sides. Since the decagon is regular, P = 10s.
P = 10s
P = 10 (8)
P = 80
Thus, the perimeter is 80 inches.

AVERAGE: Approximate √40 to the tenth’s place.

Solution:
a. Find two integers between which √40
6 < √40 < 7
Because 40 is closer to 36 than to 49, we may try 6.3 as an
estimate of √40.
b. Divide 40 by the estimate 6.3, we get 6.34.
c. Get the average of the divisor 6.3 and the quotient 6.34, and we
get 6.32.
d. Use the average as the next estimate. Repeat Steps b and c until
our divisor and quotient agree in the tenth’s place. And we get the
approximate of √40 as 6.32

DIFFICULT: The units digit of a two – digit number is one more than four times the
tens digit. Find the number if the sum of the digits is 11.
Solution:
Let x = tens digit
Then, 4x + 1 = the units digit,
And 10x + 4x + 1 = the number
The sum of the digits is 11.
x + 4x + 1 = 11
5x + 1 = 11
5x = 10
x=2
4x + 1 = 9
10x + 4x + 1 = 29

QUESTIONS IN MATH PER GRADE LEVEL

EASY: How many three-digit numbers can be formed from the digits 2, 3, 5
and 7 if repetition of digits is not allowed?
Solution:
(4)(3)(2) = 24

AVERAGE: If line m passes through the origin and the point P ( 3, 8), what is the
equation of m in slope-intercept form?
Solution:
(0, 0) and (3, 8)  𝑦 – 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 – 𝑥1 )
8−0
𝑦 − 0 = 3−0 (𝑥 − 0)
𝟖
𝒚= 𝒙

DIFFICULT: The sum of two numbers is 7 and their product is 8. What is the sum
of their cubes?
Solution: (any of the following are correct)
a) 𝑥 3 + 𝑦 3 = (𝑥 + 𝑦)(𝑥 2 − 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑦 2 )
= 7(𝑥 2 − 8 + 𝑦 2 ) = 7(𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 8)
= 7(𝑥 + 𝑦)2 − 2𝑥𝑦 − 8 = 7[72 − 2(8) − 8]
= 7(49 − 16 − 8) = 7(25) = 175
b) (𝑥 + 𝑦)3 = 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 2 𝑦 + 3𝑥𝑦 2 + 𝑦 3
→ x 3 + 𝑦 3 = (𝑥 + 𝑦)3 − 3xy(x + y)
= 73 − 3(8)(7) = 343 − 168 = 175
c) a+b=7 ; ab=8
𝑎3 + 𝑏 3 = (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎2 − 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2 )
𝑎3 + 𝑏 3 = (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 − 𝑎𝑏)
Remark 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 = (𝑎 + 𝑏)2 − 2𝑎𝑏
So

𝑎3 + 𝑏 3 = (𝑎 + 𝑏)((𝑎 + 𝑏)2 − 2𝑎𝑏 − 𝑎𝑏)

𝑎3 + 𝑏 3 = (𝑎 + 𝑏)((𝑎 + 𝑏)2 − 3𝑎𝑏)
𝑎3 + 𝑏 3 = (7)(72 − 3 ⋅ 8)
𝑎3 + 𝑏 3 = 175

Grade 9
EASY: Two consecutive angles of a parallelogram have measures (x+30)˚ and
[2(x-30)]˚. What is the measure of the smaller angle?
Solution:
X + 30 + 2X – 60 = 180
3X – 30 = 180
3X = 210
X = 70
ANSWER = 80

AVERAGE: A 23-feet ladder is placed so as to form an angle of 250 with the wall of a
building. How far is the ladder from the base of the building? Sin 25 = 0.4226 Cos
25 = 0.9063 Tan 25 = 0.4663
Solution:
SIN 25 = OPP/HYP
0.4226 = OPP/23
OPP = (0.4226)(23)
OPP = 9.72 feet

DIFFICULT: Pump A can fill a tank of water in 4 hours. Pump B can fill the same tank
in 6 hours. Both pumps are started at 8:00 a.m. to fill the same empty tank. An hour
later, pump B breaks down and took one hour to repair and was restarted again. When
will the tank be full? (Round your answer to the nearest minute).

Solution:
Pump A can fill 1 tank in 4 hours; hence the rate of pump A is 1 / 4 (tank /
hour)
Pump B can fill 1 tank in 6 hours; hence the rate of pump B is 1 / 6 (tank /
hour)
Let t be the number of hours that takes pump A to fill the tank. Hence during
the t hours pump A fills t × (1 / 4) of the tank
Pump B was stopped for one hour and hence will pump water into the tank
for t -1 hours; hence during t - 1 pump B fills (t - 1) × (1 / 6) of the tank
The two pumps work together to fill 1 tank; hence t × (1 / 4) + (t - 1) × (1 /
6) = 1
Multiply all terms in the above equation by 24 and simplify
24 × t × (1 / 4) + 24 × (t - 1) × (1 / 6) = 24 × 1 6 t + 4(t - 1) = 24
Solve for t 10 t = 28

EASY: Write the rational number 5.31313131... as the ratio of two integers.
Solution:
We first write the given rational number as an infinite sum as follows
5.313131... = 5 + 0.31 + 0.0031 + 0.000031 + ....
The terms making 0.31 + 0.0031 + 0.000031 ... are those of a
geometric sequence with a1 = 0.31 and r = 0.01. Hence the use of the
formula for an infinite sum of a geometric sequence
S = a 1 / (1 - r) = 0.31 / (1 - 0.01) = 0.31 / 0.99 = 31 / 99
We now write 5.313131... as follows
5.313131... = 5 + 31/99 = 526 / 99

AVERAGE: How many different words can we make using the letters A, B, E and L ?

Solution:
We have 4 choices for the first letter, 3 choices for the second letter, 2
choices for the third letter and 1 choice for the fourth letter. Hence the
number of words is given by
4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 4! = 24

DIFFICULT: The blood groups of 200 people is distributed as follows: 50 have type
A blood, 65 have B blood type, 70 have O blood type and 15 have type AB blood. If a
person from this group is selected at random, what is the probability that this person
has O blood type?
Solution:
We construct a table of frequencies for the blood groups as follows:
Type A - 50
Type B - 65
Type O - 70
Type AB 15
