A. Pressure Testing
Each length of pipe shall be subjected to a hydrostatic test in accordance with an ASTM,
ASME, or API specification referenced for manufacture. Where there is a choice in the
specification of hydrostatic test or other NDE (Nondestructive Examination), the hydrostatic test
shall be performed. If no hydrostatic test is required in the Manufacturer's specification, then
the ASTM A 530 / ASME SA 530 hydrostatic test shall be performed.

percent ultrasonic examination 200 mm back from each end, in the parent metal, on
pieces as selected by Inspector. Laminations having a transverse dimension exceeding
6 mm are considered injurious defects. Pipe containing such defects shall be cut back
until such defects are removed.

Item Description, shall be in accordance with the requirements of the applicable
ASME Piping Code.
d. Evaluation of flange face damage shall be in accordance with ASME B16.5 Table
3 or ASME B16.47 Table 16.
1. Each fitting or flange shall be marked in strict accordance with the specification
referenced for manufacture, or MSS SP-25 as a minimum. Pipe shall be marked in strict
accordance with the ASTM, ASME, or API specification of manufacture. The Buyer’s
Item Code Number shall be stenciled on the exterior of the pipe at 2 m intervals.
2. If blasting and priming of pipe are required by the Item Description or the PO, then the
original marking such as material grade designation, schedule, and heat number shall be
restenciled on the exterior of the pipe at 2 m intervals with paint compatible with primer.
In addition, the Buyer’s Item Code Number shall be stenciled next to the ASTM
Marking.
3. Pipe, fittings, and flanges shall be color coded when specified in the Item Description.
Color coding is intended to supplement, not replace, normal identification marking
required by ASTM, ASME, API, MSS, or other standards.
4. When specified to be color coded, each length of pipe and each fitting shall be painted
over its entire length, and each flange around its edge, with a 12 mm to 25 mm wide
stripe. Each threaded or socket weld fitting shall be marked with a dot of paint 12 mm to
25 mm in diameter. Supplier shall exercise good judgment in selecting appropriate width,
depending on size of item to be color coded.
5. Marking paint or ink shall be resistant to salt water atmospheres, tropical or freezing
climates, or similar attack; it shall not, in itself, cause corrosion of the piping components
to which it is applied. For austenitic stainless steel or nickel alloy piping components, it
shall not contain chlorides, nor shall it contain metals, such as zinc or lead, that may
cause corrosive attack at high temperatures.
6. Paint shall not be applied to the inside of pipe, threads, weld bevels, gasket surfaces,
symbols, or markings, if doing so would obliterate identification.

7. In addition to the above marking, each pipe nipple and swage nipple shall be identified
with the material and schedule, weight, or thickness by stenciling, etching, or steel
stamping with low stress stamps that shall neither infringe on the minimum thickness nor
result in sharp discontinuities.
A. Carbon steel and chrome steel pipe, fittings, and flanges, when not galvanized or prime coated,
shall be furnished with the Manufacturer's standard protective mill coating. Austenitic stainless
steel pipe, fittings, and flanges shall not be coated.
B. Austenitic stainless steel or nickel alloy pipe, fittings, and flanges shall be protected from
ferritic contamination and chloride attack such as might occur from exposure to salt water spray
or atmosphere during shipment, cleaning, fabrication, testing, or storage. Consideration shall
also be given to enclosing or wrapping in a vaporproof barrier material.
C. Piping components with beveled ends shall be palletized and shrink wrapped or banded with
steel or plastic strapping.
D. Threaded ends of pipe shall be fitted with plastic thread protectors. Threaded or socket weld
openings in fittings and flanges shall be fitted with plastic plugs.
E. Flanges shipped on pallets or in wooden crates and shrink-wrapped or tied down so that they
cannot bump together, shall have cardboard, pressboard, rubber, or plastic face protectors
between layers of flanges. Single loose flanges shall have high-impact plastic protectors secured
with lock plugs (integral or separate). Wood, cardboard or pressboard protectors (that can
absorb water) are not acceptable as flange face protectors.
