Phân biệt BENEFIT, PROFIT và ADVANTAGE

I/ PHÂN BIỆT VÀ CÁCH DÙNG


 Trong khi ADVANTAGE và PROFIT chỉ đóng vai trò danh từ, BENEFIT còn có thêm chức năng của một
động từ.

Cùng mang nghĩa là điều có lợi (theo nghĩa tích cực), BENEFIT và ADVANTAGE có chút khác biệt
khi ADVANTAGE thường được dùng để đối sánh với DISADVANTAGE trong các văn bản so sánh.

BENEFIT: lợi ích
PROFIT: lợi nhuận
ADVANTAGE: lợi thế

1. BENEFIT
BENEFIT vừa là danh từ, vừa là động từ.
 Khi là động từ, BENEFIT mang nghĩa “giúp đỡ, đem lại lợi ích cho”.
Ví dụ:
How can we benefit those who most need our help?

Benefit from: có được lợi ích từ
Ví dụ:
I feel that I have benefited greatly from her wisdom.
All the students will benefit from the new textbooks.
 BENEFIT danh từ mang nghĩa “lợi ích” là những lợi ích nói chung của một cái gì đó (a helpful or
good effect, or something intended to help).
The discovery of oil brought many benefits to the town.
One of the many benefits of foreign travel is learning how to cope with the unexpected.
He’s had the benefit of an expensive education and yet he continues to work as a waiter.
 Đôi khi BENEFIT dùng ở dạng số nhiều (BENEFITS) để chỉ các “phúc lợi”
Phúc lợi ở đây có thể là bảo hiểm y tế, bảo hiểm thân thể, chế độ nghỉ ốm, nghỉ sinh, nghỉ lễ…) mà công ty
cung cấp cho nhân viên (an advantage such as medical insurance, life insurance, and sick pay, that employees
receive from their employer in addition tomoney)
In addition to my salary, I get a pension and medical benefits.
Hoặc là hỗ trợ của chính phủ đối với người vô gia cư, thất nghiệp.

2. PROFIT
PROFIT là danh từ
PROFIT là “lợi nhuận” thu được, tức là số tiền thu được do kinh doanh buôn bán. (money that is earned in
trade or business after paying thecosts of producing and selling goods and services)
Ví dụ:
A year ago the Tokyo company had a pretax profit of 35 million yen.
Company profits are down from last year’s figures.
When we know how much is profit, then we can apportion the money among/between us.

Ví dụ:
She makes a big profit from selling waste material to textile companies.

3. ADVANTAGE  
ADVANTAGE là danh từ
ADVANTAGE mang nghĩa “lợi thế”, tức là điều kiện thuận lợi để mang lại thành công
(a condition giving a greater chance of success)
Ví dụ:
The advantage of booking tickets in advance is that you get better seats.
Despite the twin advantages of wealth and beauty, she did not have a happy life.
The advantage of the plan is its simplicity.
CẤU TRÚC:
 Have an advantage of/ over sb/ st: có lợi thế vượt trội hơn ai
Ví dụ:
She had a decided advantage over her opponent.
 Give an advantage over sb/st: nhường cho ai/ cái gì lợi thế
Ví dụ:
His height and reach give him a big advantage over other boxers.
 Take advantage of sb/st: tận dụng, lợi dụng ai/ cái gì
Ví dụ:
I thought I’d take advantage of the sports facilities while I’m here.
