The student’s learning goal is to be able to use background knowledge to help them predict what
will happen in the book. The student’s learning goal is also to create a podcast discussing the
characters, settings, and major events from the story using key details.

teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
Students will create a podcast using Anchor to discuss Pete the Cat: Pete at the Beach. Students will
work in groups to complete this activity. I will introduce this activity by having them listen to the
podcast I made the day before. Students will be asked to make a prediction on the book and also
discuss fun facts or past experiences at the beach or with a cat. This will help students prepare for
making a podcast. In class, students will read the book Pete the Cat: Pete at the Beach. I will provide
a YouTube recording of the book being read aloud so students can follow along with. This will help
give support to students who struggle with reading. Students will then be put into groups to create a
podcast discussing the characters, settings, and main events of the book. Students will be aware of
their goals because I can statements will be posted on the board and we will review them before the
lesson starts. Students will utilize technology by using Anchor to help them create a podcast. I will
provide feedback to each group. Each group will have a meeting with me to discuss the feedback. I
will conclude the lesson by having groups share their podcast with the class.
Managing student learning:
Students will shift from passive learning to active social learners. Student’s will be passive learners when
reading the book and listening to the audio reading of the book. Student’s will then shift to active social
learners when they are put into groups to create their own podcast about the book they just read. I will have
students submit their script before recording so I can know that they are on task and can give them feedback.
This will also help students to record a podcast and can read off of the script.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
Anchor is an easy tool for students to learn how to use. I put students in groups to help support
students who may need help with the assignment. Students are able to use their creativity and own
voice for this project. This lesson helps support students learning by providing them with a
meaningful learning experience. This podcast also helps me to know what students understand from
the lesson and what they may need extra support with. This lesson supports UDL Action and
Expression because students are able to use creativity and their own voice to create a podcast.

Reflection:
I think the activities will impact student learning in a positive way. I think students will be excited for
this lesson and getting to create their own podcast. I look forward to seeing student’s final podcast.
It will be great to see all of my hard work and their hard work pay off.
