2. Topic Holiday

Holiday is a time when someone does not go to work or school and they are free to
do what they want, such as travel or relax. Holiday is also a day set aside by custom or by
law on which normal activities, especially business or work including school, are
suspended or reduced.

II. Holiday in the past and present

It is the truth that holidays are very important in a human's life. The holiday season
is supposed to be filled with lights shining brightly everywhere and the sound of people’s
laughter filling the air. For many, spending time with friends and family is much more
limited than whimsical memories from our childhood. Back then, it seemed like the
Holidays were better. Are the holidays still as good as they used to be?

1. Holiday in the past

In the past, people used to spend their holidays at home nestling in the warmth of
family and relatives. They love spending their holidays reading books, drinking tea and
telling stories. Besides, they would like to devote themselves to give a helping hand to
their neighbors in times of need. They would spend their holidays plowing the fields,
sowing seeds and watering the growing plants.

3
2. Holiday in the present

Nowadays, people tend to spend their holidays with old friends, they meet to have
fun and to cast their minds back to their heyday. They spend their holidays practicing
various activities like water-skiing, sunbathing, canoeing,... As life is getting better, many
people find it exciting to go abroad, fly to a foreign country to experience new traditions,
new civilizations and cultures. There is a thing which is much different from the past,
people today devote their time to surfing the net and watching video games. They enjoy
the holidays by doing different things to satisfy their interests.

III. TYPES OF HOLIDAY

1. Activity holiday

Activity holiday is a type of holiday in which people can take part in many
different organized activities, especially sports activity holidays where new skills and
sports are taught. An active holiday takes you out of your familiar world, and also
physically creates the time and space to try something new, to exercise, to stimulate the
brain and to learn new physical activities away from the everyday pressures and
commitments that might get in the way at home.

Participating in an activity holiday with different  leisure interests like walking the
streets, going to temples or doing charity trips,... is recommended for active people. One
of the prime examples of how an activity holiday looks is triathlon holidays such as those
held in Northern Spain.

2. Adventure holiday

Adventure holiday is one of the types of tourism that is attracting the attention of
many tourists, especially those who love to explore, adventure and return to nature.
According to the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), an adventure holiday is a
trip with at least two of the following three elements: Physical activity, natural
environments and cultural experiences.

4
The more difficult the trek, the greater the challenge, the more sense of
achievement we feel when we accomplish those goals. Adventure holidays also bring
unexpected dangers that make us unpredictable, they positively will help people learn
how to deal with "incidents" and increase their ability to cope with uncertainties in life.

For example, Fansipan Peak is an interesting adventure holiday for people who
love adventurousness. Fansipan belongs to Hoang Lien Son mountain range, not only the
highest peak in Vietnam, but also the "roof" of Indochina. With an altitude of more than
3.100 m, Fansipan is not only a famous mountain peak of the beautiful mountains of
Sapa, but also known as the "city in the clouds" for people to enjoy the holiday.

3. Honeymoon

Honeymoon is a couple's vacation after marriage. The phrase "honeymoon" often

makes people think of sweet, romantic days, and shy gestures of passionately in love
couples. The honeymoon vacation is both a time to balance and relieve stress after the
tiring and stressful wedding preparation process and a time to cultivate affection and
enjoy the couple's own space.

In addition, a Honeymoon is meant to connect the love of a young couple, making

them able to understand each other better and appreciate each other more. Honeymoons
are often organized by couples with good economic conditions, as a way to help two
people enjoy a private moment, making them feel undisturbed by the things around them.
This is a European custom, which later spread around the world.

Bali is a destination chosen by many couples for a romantic honeymoon. The

beautiful island of Bali is known as a honeymoon paradise with its long coastline and
typical tropical climate. Bali will offer many wonderful experiences on your honeymoon,
with cocktails around the pool or relaxing days on the beaches of Kuta, and Sanur...

4. Culture holiday

5
The cultural holiday is an annual activity that plays an important role in preserving
and promoting national identity. This is an opportunity for ethnic people to meet,
exchange, honor, and raise the sense of preserving national identity.

This is also the need to create and enjoy the material and spiritual cultural values of
all classes of the population, a form of education and transfer to the next generations to
know how to preserve, inherit and promote the precious traditional moral values of the
nation in its own way such as folk songs, folk dances, customs, and habits, …

Cultural festivals have recreated the unique traditional festivals of the ethnic
groups in Vietnam such as The ceremony of praying for riches of the Tay ethnic group,
the ceremony of granting identity of the Dao people, the ceremony of celebrating the new
rice of the Gia Lai people, ...This helps to spread, preserve and promote Vietnamese
national culture

5. Ecotourism Holiday

Ecotourism holidays are essentially forms of tourism that respect the destination’s
places, wildlife, and people. They are holidays which are using sustainable transport to
natural areas, conserving the environment, and improving the well-being of the local
people.

Since the 1980s, ecotourism holidays have been considered a critical endeavor by
environmentalists, so that future generations may experience destinations relatively
untouched by human intervention. They focus on educating travelers on local
environments and natural surroundings with an eye to ecological conservation. These
holidays are low-impact, small-scale alternatives to standard commercial tourism.

Ecotourism holidays in Costa Rica is one of the key activities of the tourism
industry in the country. By the early 1990s, Costa Rica became known as the poster child
of ecotourism. The country is among many developing nations that look to ecotourism as
a way of cashing in on the growing demand for this popular trend of travel. South Africa
has used ecotourism holidays to sustain and improve its immense biodiversity, as well as
invigorate its economy. Tourism is the fourth largest generator of foreign exchange in
6
South Africa and it is the idea of encouraging visitors while promoting and supporting a
country's biodiversity.

6. Family Holiday

Family holidays are seen as breaks away from busy everyday lives. They are
supposed to be a relief from stress and chores, giving time for recovery and rest in the
pleasant companionship of the family. Family holidays are special as they create
memories for years to come and allow you to spend some quality time with those you
love.

Family holidays are the antithesis of the holiday kids’ clubs vibe, where
assumptions about what young people consider to be fun often go awry. Small group
holidays are also perfect if they want a shortcut to a certain country’s cultural and natural
highlights. It can be a teenager holiday such as wild camping in the USA’s national parks,
coasteering in Wales, horse riding in Catalonia, or island-to-island sea kayaking in
Croatia. While a lot of our family holidays are in small groups of like-minded families,
they also choose to do something independently in Independent holidays,  such as
walking in the Mercantour National Park with a donkey to carry your bags or cycling
around a fantastic network of rural trails in Catalonia.

Family cycling holidays from Catalonia to China, the Loire Valley to Fiji, the hills
are alive with the sound of chirpy cyclists. Family walking holidays where they throw in a
safari camp, a donkey to carry their bags, a mountain yurt, or a swim at the end of each
day.

IV.     Advantage and Disadvantage of Holiday

1. Advantage of holidays

In human’s lives, people can often feel worn down and stressed. Taking a break to
focus on themself or enjoying precious time with family by taking on a holiday can make
people feel much happier and healthier.

7
a. Holidays bring many health benefits
Holidays are good for both mental health and physical health. We’ve touched on
this quite a bit already, but it’s worth reiterating the benefits that a holiday can have on
your mind. Going on holiday gives people plenty of opportunities to recharge their
batteries. Relaxation drops people’s blood pressure and reduces the levels of cortisol and
the stress hormone. The downtime they get on holiday is also great for giving their mind
some respite.

b. Holidays give us a break from our everyday routine

Holidays allow us a time-out from our usual chores and their attendant worries.
They provide time to socialize with family and friends. As everyone is doing the same,
holidays foster a sense of community and goodwill. On a holiday, people try to dress a
little better, eat a little better and have more fun than usual. They can escape their
everyday selves and become a happier, more hopeful person.

2. Disadvantage and Cause

a. Having a holiday can be an expensive endeavor

One of the holiday’s disadvantages is spending too much money for the trip. Some
people try to get away with their family for the holidays even though they can't afford the
cost, or some people intentionally agree to an outing just to have a photo montage to show
off to friends. Food, transportation or accommodation, which can add up to quite a bit of
money and maybe more expensive than they expected but they accept it. Moreover,
before the trip, they often have to prepare a lot from clothes to little accessories. This
inadvertently made them fall into poverty and ran out of money.

b. People do not truly relax after a holiday

One of the disadvantages to having a holiday is the fact that many people do not
get to relax once they return home. They can be busy rearranging their household chores
and accommodation. Sometimes, there is unfinished business they need to do and this will
probably take them one day to fully complete. Moreover, people tend to plan their exits
from work but most don't think about how they're going to return. Time away from the

8
office isn’t always as stress-free as it sounds and many people felt stressed during their
time off. Returning to work after a holiday is also a big psychological problem for them.

V. Solution
With the above mentioned disadvantages, we offer some solutions to deal with the
bad holiday situations.

1. Thorough financial management

Holidays can be fun, but overspending while on vacation isn't. Therefore, you need
to manage your holiday spending before, during and after. It is necessary to plan your
holiday budget and set a limit on what you want to spend on. These can help you to stay
within budget and minimize unnecessary costs.

2. Just go when you are readly

Going on a holiday and leaving a mess of work behind is not a good idea. If you
don’t have a lot of extra time to devote to a holiday, then you may need to delay a few
days until you are truly ready. Besides, whenever you are on a vacation, put the phone
away to avoid interruptions and mitigate mindless checking from work.
