Velocity = 1/n R2/3 S1/2

Here Longitudinal Slope = 0.04
In100 m it raise to 4 m
n= Rugosity Coefficient 0.1 As per Table 5.1 of IRC :SP-13 (For stoney Section )
R = 1.57
Velocity 2.7 m/s
Discharge = 59.5 Cum/s

2 Computation ofDischarge by Empirical Formula

2.1 Discharge by Dicken,s Formula (Refer Clause 4.2 of article 4,IRC:SP-13)

Discharge As per Dicken,s Formula Q= CM3/4

Q = Peak Run off in Cum/s

M= Cathcment Area in Sqkm
C=14 to 19 for rainfall more than 120 cm
C= 11 to 14 where Annual rainfall is 60-120 cm
C=22 for Western Ghat
C adopted = 14
M= 5 Sqkm

Discharge Q= 47 Cum/s
2.2 Discharge by Ryve,s Formula (Refer Clause 4.3 of article 4,IRC SP-13-2004)

Discharge as per Ryve's formula Q= CM2/3

Q = Peak Run off in Cum/s
M= Cathcment Area in Sqkm
C= 6.8 for 25 Km from the Coast
,=8.5 for 25km to 160 km form coast
,=10 for limited areas of hills

C= 10 Adoted for Hills

M= 5 Sqkm

Q= 29.2 Cum/s

2.3 By Ingli,s Formula (Refer Clause No:4.4 of Article 4 ,IRC-SP-13 -2004)

Discharge as per Ingli's formula

Q= 125M/(M+10)^0.5
Q = Peak Run off in Cum/s
M= Cathcment Area in Sqkm
M= 5 Sqkm

Q= 161 cum/s

The Highest value of disharge shall be considered provided ,it does not exceed the next highest dischagre
by 50% .If it does restrict it to that

3 Discharge by Manning's formula at Bridge site = 27.4 Cum/s

Discharge by Dicken,s Formula = 47 Cum/s
Discharge by Ryve,s Formula = 29.2 Cum/s
Discharge as per Ingli's formula = 161 Cum/s
Maximum Discharge = 161 Cum/s
Next Maximum Discharge = 47 Cum/s
Hence design discharge (1.5 Times the next discharge ) 70 Cum/s

Hence Increase in design discharge by 30% for Scour depth calculation as per IRC :78:-2014 Clause 703.1.1

So design dischage for Scour calculation = 91 Cum/s

4 Water Way Calculation

Regime Width W = 4.8*Q^0.5

= 46 m
Bridge Width (Clear ) = 40 m
Area of Water way required per unit width= 2.3 Sqm
Area Provided with new bridge = 41.90 Sqm
So water way provided is more than required ,Hence water way is adequate .

5 Scour Depth Calculation :

Refer IRC 78-2014 ,Clause 703.2

Mean scour depth dsm = 1.34*(Db2/Ksf)(1/3)
Where Db = Q/W= Design dischage per unit widht = 2.28 Cum/sec/m
Reference Scour depth in Bouldry starta by RK Dhiman
7.00
Ksf = Silt factor Paper No-8 , weighted mean diameter of boulders =
Mean scour depth = dsm = 1.33 m
Max scour depth at abt. = 1.27*dsm = 1.68 m

Max scour level(abutment) = = HFL - 1.27*dsm = 725.32 m

Founding Level of PCC 1.5 m Below Scour = 723.817 m
Founding Level of Bridge Abutment = = 721.1 m
6 Calculation of Afflux

Refer IRC SP13 :2004 ,Clause 16.5

Linear Water Way at Bridge = 28 m
Linear Water Way at Bridge U/s = 32 m
Linear Water Way at Bridge D/s = 41 m

Considering afflux depth is more that Dd/4

91.28 Cum
Q= 1.76*Cw*LH3/2 =

Here Cw= 0.98 For with wide opening with no floor

91.28 = 1.76*0.98*28*H3/2 Discharge Formula at Bridge

H= 1.53 m

Du = 2.22 m

Q= WDu*u At Just Upstream

91.28 u= 1.285 m/s

u2/2g = 0.08 m

H= 2.30 m
h= 1.19 m
Hence Afflux 1.119 m
So clearance of bridge sofit shall be given at least 1.5 m form HFL
