b. Demonstrate the ability to use a variety of non-standard unit of
measurements to determine the length, weight and capacity ; and
c. Value the importance of using non-standard units.

II. Subject Matter: Estimating and measuring length, weight and capacity
using Non-Standard Units of Measurement

(Students do as told.)

(Students do as told.)
B. Motivation
“Now children, I will show you a
pictures and you’re going to guess
what’s in the pictures.

C. Lesson Proper
“What is non-standard units of
measurements?

“Non-standard units of measurement

are units that aren't typically used, such
as a pencil, an arm, a toothpick, or a
shoe for measuring the length and in
weight might include cups, cubes or
sweets.”

Length- measurement of something

from end to end

Example:

“Using
paper clips, how many paper clips are
equal to a pencil?”
“It shows
that the length of the pencil are
equivalent to 4 paper clips.”

(Teacher will show another example for

better understanding)
(Students response)
Remember. In measuring length using
non-standard unit:
1. Non-standard items need to touch
2. Measure from end to end
3. Measure in a straight line
4. Do not mix nonstandard items i.e.;
no blocks and pencils to measure one
object. Use all the same objects.

Weight- a measure of the heaviness

of an object

“Look at the fruits above. You will find

that there are different sizes and
weights or weights. Some fruits are
heavy, some are small and not so
heavy.”
“Using nonstandard units, can you
identify the fruits above which one is
heavy, heaviest and heaviest?”
Capacity- the maximum amount that
something can contain

“Using your hand or a small cup, you (Students will answer the activity)
can get an approximate capacity of
something.”

(Students will answer the activity)

(Students answers)
Cylindrical glass is equivalent to 24
small cups.

(Teacher will show another example for

better understanding)

Group Activity
Group 1
Directions: Check the pictures in each
number. Choose and circle the one with a

write it on your paper.

Group 2
Directions: Check each picture below. Give
the corresponding number or size. And write it
on your paper.

D. Application
“I have here another activity and after
that we have a short quiz.”
E. Generalization
“What is non-standard units of
measurement?”
“What are the tools that we need to
measure length? How about weight?
And capacity?”
“How do we measure things?”

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Check the pictures in each number. Do what is asked.
V. Assignment
Directions: Measure the following using a straw and give the equivalent
number.
