Sub-topic Characteristics of Sound Waves
Grade Level 7
Time Allotment 1 hour (online session)
Teacher Maristella Z. Abenio
Content Standard
The learners demonstrate an understanding of: the characteristics of sound.

Daily routine
1. Greetings
2. Checking of attendance
I. ELICIT
The teacher will call three (3) students to have a simple recall with the previous discussion.
II. ENGAGE
 The teacher will let the students give their answer about the question “What do you think the world be
without sound? What would life be like without sound?”. Students must answer 2-3 sentences in the
provided jamboard link by the teacher.
III. EXPLORE
 The teacher will let the students watch sound experiments from YouTube and answer the learning
activity sheet provided INDIVIDUALLY. The students will be given 15 minutes to accomplish their
task.

relevance of the activity to the topic and elaborate the student’s answers.
V. ELABORATE
COMPRESSION REGION
• It represents the area of a longitudinal wave where the particles are closest to one another.

RAREFACTION
• Rarefaction is defined as the component of a wave in which a medium's particles are further apart. This
area experiences low pressure.

ACOUSTICS
• It is the field of science that studies the properties and transmission of sound. And sound has three (3)
major characteristics namely; pitch, loudness, and quality.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SOUND WAVES

PITCH
• Is the highness or lowness of a tone, which is related to the frequency of the tone;
• Pitch depends upon the frequency of the waves.
• To change the pitch, it involves changing the frequency of the vibrating source.
 Audible frequencies- 20,000 Hz or 20 kHz
 Ultrasonic frequencies- above 20, 000 Hz
 Infrasonic frequencies - below 20Hz
LOUDNESS AND INTENSITY
• It refers to how soft or intense a sound is. It can be determined by the amplitude of the sound waves.

Which wave do you think is more pleasant to the ear?

DECIBEL SCALE (dB)

• The intensity of a sound is measured using a decibel scale.
• Sound can be measured with a device called a decibel meter.

QUALITY OR TONE
• Tone refers to the sound quality.
• It depends on the combination of different frequencies of sound waves.
1. Partial tones- are the different tones that are produced from a musical instrument.
2. Overtones- are characterized by frequencies higher than fundamental. overtones are all pitches
higher than the lowest pitch within an individual sound.

VI. EVALUATE
 The teacher will provide the quizziz link in order to assess the students learning. Questions are composed of
multiple-choice, identification, fil-in-the-blanks, and open-ended questions with a total of 15 points.

Questions:
1. It refers to tones produced from a musical instrument.
2. A sound wave is a type of_______
3. It is the frequency that is inaudible to humans.
4. It is the highness or lowness of a tone.
5. What is the maximum audible Hertz (Hz) in humans?
6. A region where there is low pressure and particles are far distant.
7. High amplitude, ______energy, and_______intensity
8. The scale use to measure the intensity of a sound.
9. It is the small region of a sound wave where there is a high pressure and particles are closest to
each other.
10. The field of science that studies the properties and transmission of sound.
11-13. In 2-3 sentences distinguish rarefaction and compression in sound wave.
14-15. briefly explain how sound wave travels.
VII. EXTEND
The teacher will let the students to study in advance for the next topic, which is about Nature of Light.
