II. CONTENTS
1. History
Hạ Long is a historical land with age-old culture. It is the capital and first-class
provincial city of Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam. The city is named after Ha Long Bay,
6
which is located in the south of the city and a famous natural heritage of Vietnam. It was
founded in 1993, when the old capital, Hồng Gai, was merged with Bãi Cháy, the main
tourist area.
The city mainly lies on Ha Long Bay. Humankind has been present on here for a long
time. Over the years, archaeologists, researchers concluded that over the course of history,
there were three cultures known as Soi Nhụ, Hạ Long and Cái Bèo culture. It shows that the
bay and its surrounding areas were one of the cradles of mankind. The heartland of today's
Ha Long City is formerly just a fishing village, called the Oyster Coast. By the beginning of
the Nguyễn dynasty, it was renamed to Mau Le. The current city was then part of Hoành Bồ
District.
At present, Ha Long city has 21 wards and 12 communes. In addition to Ha Long Bay –
the world natural wonder and heritage, Ha Long also has other important historical relics and
interesting entertainment centers.
2. Characteristic
Natural conditions:
Ha Long city has a diverse and complex topography, this is also one of the oldest formed
areas in Vietnam’s territory, the terrain here includes hills, valleys, coastal areas and sea.
The island is divided into three distinct regions: The mountainous area surrounding the north
and northeast, the coastal area south of National Highway 18A and the island area.
7
Specifically, the mountainous area covers the north and northeast with an average height
of 150 meters to 250 meters, running from Yen Lap to Ha Tu, the highest peak is 504
meters. This mountain range lowers towards the sea with an average slope of 15-20%,
interspersed with narrow valleys. The second region is the coastal area south of National
Highway 18A, the average elevation is from 0.5 to 5 meters. The last one is the island area
including the entire bay area, with plenty of islands, mainly rocky islands. The geological
structure of Ha Long city is solely gravel, gravel, sandstone, clay, etc. that is stable and has
high load-bearing strength, from 2.5 to 4.5 kg/cm², which is convenient for the construction
of buildings. construction. Minerals are mainly coal and construction materials.
Climate:
Ha Long city belongs to the coastal climate zone with 2 distinct seasons: winter and
summer. The average annual temperature is 23.7 °C. Winter usually starts from November
to April in the next year, the average temperature is 16.7 °C, the coldest one is 5 °C.
Summer begins in May and lasts in October, the average temperature in summer is 28.6 °C,
the hottest one can be up to 38 °C. The weather in Ha Long is quite similar to Hanoi capital,
including two periods of interference between the rainy season and the dry season, helping
to form two more typical seasons of the North, spring and autumn.
The average annual rainfall of Ha Long is 1832 mm, unevenly distributed in 2 seasons.
In summer, it rains from May to October, accounting for 80-85% of the total annual rainfall.
Rainfall is highest in July and August, about 350mm. Winter is the dry season with little
rain, from November to April in the next year, it only reaches about 15-20% of the total
annual rainfall. Rainfall is the least in December and January, only about 4 to 40 mm, the
average annual humidity is 84%. At the same time, the climate in Ha Long has two distinct
types of monsoons: Northeast wind in winter and Southwest wind in summer.
Travel events:
Although it is a famous tourist destination, the living environment in Ha Long is
relatively peaceful. Fresh air, rarely traffic jams in the inner city, security and order are
always guaranteed. The pace of life in the center of Ha Long is crowded and bustling but not
too busy. Ha Long is still extremely vibrant with cultural and entertainment activities held
continuously throughout the year such as festivals:
- Halong Carnival: Taking place in late April and early May every year, Halong
Carnival is a great street festival with the appearance of dance groups, music and
8
colorful costumes. This is a good opportunity to explore the local culture and enjoy the
special performances.
- Cua Ong Temple Festival: Cua Ong Temple Festival takes place on the two main
days of the 3-4/2 lunar calendar, but usually lasts until the end of the third lunar month.
The festival is organized flexibly, with activities such as sacrifice, procession of Tran
Quoc Tang's speech, incense offering ceremony and many artistic or sports activities.
- Halong Bay Light Festival: Held at the end of the year, Halong Bay Light Festival
gives visitors an impressive and memorable experience. Light is used to decorate
buildings, roads and boats on the bay, which creates a fairyland in the dark.
The festival is an indispensable spiritual dish in the cultural life of each land, and Ha
Long is no exception. The festivals here not only have a long history, bold culture and
tradition, but also are held on a large scale, attracting a large number of Vietnamese and
international tourists every year. Ha Long will always be an attractive destination with
countless new things for people to explore.
3. Top tourist attractions of Ha Long
Ha Long Bay:
Being one of the most prominent tourist destinations of Vietnam, Halong Bay fascinates
visitors because of not only its heavenly natural beauty, but also its value in geology, history
and archeology.
Halong Bay covers nearly 1900 islets of different size, some very large such as Thien
Cung Cave or Surprise Cave, others as small as a few meters wide. The bay owns thousands
of pristine, mysterious, and beautiful islands and caves, and rich ecosystems. The famous
islands and beautiful caves in Ha Long Bay that you can refer to include Ga Choi island,
Ngoc Vung island, Con Coc island, Trinh Nu cave, Sung Sot cave, …
Nature lovers and adventure-seekers are drawn to Halong Bay to appreciate its
captivating landscape and diverse wildlife – both flora and fauna. But aside from the natural
world, there’s a range of activities and experiences that travelers can do while touring the
bay – from workshops and master classes on board the ship to water sports and cave
exploration.
With beautiful experiences and nature, Ha Long Bay was voted as one of the New 7
Wonders of the World in 2011 and one of the most worth-visiting tourist destinations in
Vietnam. The system of rocky islands with particular shapes and shades helps Ha Long Bay
9
twice in a row to be ranked by UNESCO as one of the new natural wonders of the world. In
1994, Ha Long Bay was internationally recognized as a world natural heritage site for the
first time. In addition, in 2000, UNESCO once again named Ha Long Bay as a world
heritage site because of its outstanding geological value
Overall, Ha Long Bay offers an unforgettable experience that showcases the natural
beauty of Vietnam and is definitely worth a visit!
Cat Ba Island:
Cat Ba Island is Halong Bay's largest island and the best stop if you want to do
something else besides exploring the deep turquoise waters. The island is home to some nice
hotels; Cat Ba National Park, which covers one third of the island; and a number of tourist
attractions connected to the Vietnam War–more notably the Hospital Cave, an underground,
bomb-proof hospital and safe house.
There are some excellent hiking trails on the island, including an 18-km route that leads
to a mountain peak. Most hikers stop by the kiosks in Viet Hai, a minority village where
snacks and lunch are served. Having a guide is not imperative but is recommended so you
can make sense of the verdant canopy of trees. Most tourists actually prefer to explore the
park on organized tours. You’ll get to explore its natural beauty highlighted by caves,
limestone forests, cascading waterfalls, and small streams flowing to the sea.
Cat Ba is also the starting point for adventurers wishing to get up close and personal
with Halong Bay. This is the best place to get a kayak, join a tour to explore the caves on the
island, take off on a hike through the national park (trails are clearly marked so you won't
get lost), or do some rock climbing. Organized tours are available if you want to try
something not included in your cruise package, but many visitors just pay a local for a ride
on their boat.
Cat Ba doesn't have many roads, so walking and biking are not only the easiest and
greenest ways to get around but also the best options to make sure you don't miss out on
anything–including opportunities to run into giant lizards or catch sight of a rare eagle in
flight.
Cat Ba also has its own three beaches that are perfect for swimming and quiet in the
mornings, before cruises arrive. Between May and September, it's also possible to snorkel
around the island.
Squid rolls:
Squid rolls Ha Long is a popular specialty that you can buy as a gift when traveling to
Ha Long. You can buy it at almost any market in Ha Long, but I think you should go to Ha
Long market 1 and Ha Long market 2 to buy it, especially Ha Long market 2.
Behind this market area, on the left side of Vincom Ha Long, there will be a row of
kiosks selling Cha Muc. Here you can choose the type of “Cha” according to your budget,
for example, 1kg of Cha Muc for 350.000 VND will be mixed (mixed from many squid
ingredients such as type 1 , type 2 and type 3 squid). 400.000 VND will mix less and
480.000 will be type 1 squid without mixing. All are arranged in a foam tray that looks very
polite with a quantity of about more than 30 pieces. Note that you should buy vacuum-
packed squid to avoid being affected by the smell in other luggage.

Ninh province. Chickens are fed naturally and do not use growth hormones. This is why

Chicken are fed in Tiên Yên hill has a fragrant, chewy and sweeter meat than other types of
chicken. Tiên Yên hill chicken can be processed into many different dishes such as fried
chicken, steamed beer chicken, ginger chicken.
Sa sung:
If you have ever set foot here, you will surely know about Sa sung - one of the
specialties that cannot be missed when traveling to Ha Long. Sa sung is considered a
delicious and nutritious specialty for anyone who intends to buy gifts for family and friends.
This strange marine creature has high nutritional value, thick and white flesh, a special
fragrance, so its price is often quite salty when it falls into 400,000 VND - 500,000 VND /
kg. To buy genuine Sa sung, please go to reputable seafood and dried food stores in Ha Long
to avoid buying expensive gifts but mistakenly buying fake goods.
III. CONCLUSION

mentioned above such as characteristic, speciality or top tourist attractions of Ha Long City.
In Ha Long, you can not only admire the majestic beauty of nature, but also enjoy
participating in many interesting activities.
Visiting Ha Long tourist attractions become more perfect if you can have time to stay
on nice cruises overnight on the bay or stay at beautiful resorts.
