the protection of the new 16” & 30” pipelines. Three Vertical deep anode bed (type A-4) with fifteen (15) nos. TA-4
vertical anodes each should be installed in MLIV-1 (30.6KM), MLIV-2 (62 KM) & MLIV-3 (94KM) as per IFC
drawings.
The word “Owner” refers to ARAMCO and the word “Contractor” refers to CAT
This plan is a living document and will be subject to change leading up to and during the construction work being
undertaken.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
This method statement provides guidance and site rules to employees and Sub Contractors for the
protection of personnel engaged in the deep anode bed installation.
The intent of this method statement is to provide the broad outline as to how the site works shall
be executed for the South Ghawar Transmission Pipeline Project, controlled, and delivered as per
the schedule with utmost importance to Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental
requirements. The detailed method statement to which construction shall be carried out.
The document describes the method to be followed for South Ghawar pipeline construction for
30” Gas transmission & 16” Condensate line work, which will meet the requirements of Saudi
Aramco Engineering Standards.
All person undertaking work covered by this method statement will be aware of the requirements
of this method statement.
This method statement will be applicable for the installation of impressed cathodic protection
system for the protection primarily for the pipeline construction of 30” Gas Transmission & 16”
Condensate line in South Ghawar pipeline project under the scope of CAT international work.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
Following are the responsibilities and reporting structure of personnel involved in the scope of
the procedure:
CONSTRUCTION MANAGER
The company QA and QC Manager are the representative of the project and has the responsibility for
the implementation and maintenance of the quality management system.
QC SUPERVISOR / QC INSPECTOR:
Shall carry out planned inspections, surveillance inspections, and release hold points by signing various
quality records as proof of inspection conforming to specifications.
QA/QC Inspector shall issue Request for Inspection (RFI) to Saudi Aramco as defined by the SATIP
using Saudi Aramco form Eng. # 6717 or thru Quality Management Information System (QMIS).
QC Inspector shall accompany the Saudi Aramco representative to carry out routine inspections and
release hold points by signing and obtaining the Saudi Aramco representative approval signatures on
the various quality records as proof of inspection conforming to specifications
Shall be responsible for ensuring that the project construction per IFC packages and conforming to
Saudi Aramco Standards.
SAFETY OFFICER:
The assigned Safety Officer shall be responsible for the observance of all safety precautions required.
The location of each anode bed, junction boxes and cable route shall be marked at site during (stakes)
as per IFC project’s drawings.
Temporary access road and pad should be constructed to provide access into and through construction
site.
All anodes with cracks, inclusions or other defects should not be used.
All anodes with damaged insulation or wire, abrasion damage, splices, and/or any form of wire repair
should not be used.
Repaired impressed current anode cable leads, anodes, or anodes with repaired anode-to-cable
connections should not be used.
Inspect impressed current anode cable leads for insulation damage just before installation using a pulse
type holiday detector set at 18,000 volts DC (SATR-X-3201).
Anodes that fail this test should be returned to the warehouse or to the anode manufacturer.
Touch inspection of the anode cable insulation immediately adjacent to the head of the anode.

Anodes that are found to have noticeable “necking” or an obvious reduction in diameter of the
insulation near the head of the anode should not be installed.
Install deep anodes according to Standard Drawings AA-036385 and AA-036356. Refer to 17-SAIP-50
“Inspection Coverage of Cathodic Protection Deep Anode Beds” for inspection guidelines to be
followed during installation.
Deep anode bed installations (deeper than 15 meters) require pre-approval for the maximum
allowed drilling depth by the Groundwater Division of the Saudi Aramco Reservoir
Characterization Department.
The design agency is responsible for obtaining the approval.
The installation should not begin drilling without knowledge of the maximum allowed drilling
depth, and documented verification that the approval has been received.
When anode holes are drilled with water or drilling mud, take drill stem resistance and test anode
resistance measurements during drilling of the anode hole in accordance with the requirements
detailed in Standard Drawing AA-036385.
A Calibrated 4-pin resistance meter shall be use for measurements.
Data measured shall be submitted to the Supervisor of the Cathodic Protection group in CSD (with
a copy to the CP engineering group of the proponent organization).
Final acceptable bore hole depth and anode placement for optimal current distribution and anode
bed resistance shall be determined by the CSD.
Anode holes location drilled water shall not be added to the hole, and drill stem and test anode
measurements shall not be taken unless specifically requested by the Supervisor of the Cathodic
Protection group in CSD.
At no time should the anodes be supported by their cables. A rope, sling or support pipe to lift or
lower anodes weighing more than 40 kg should be used.
When coupling sections of support pipe, care should be taken to ensure that cables are not rotated
in the well and if practical, pipe support brackets are aligned with the preceding sections of the
pipe support.
Calculate the amount of backfill required as specified on AA-036385 and mix the calcined
petroleum coke with water to form a slurry. Remove all floating particles and pump the calcined
petroleum coke slurry from the bottom of the hole at a slow rate, allowing the hole to fill from the
bottom up.
The calcined petroleum coke slurry must be allowed at least 24 hours to settle before installation
of the backfill material (usually cement) above the calcined petroleum.
A measurement of the resistance to ground of each anode and of all anodes combined shall be
taken immediately before installing any backfill or cement above the coke breeze section of the
bore hole. Measurements that indicate problems with the anodes shall be resolved before
backfilling or cementing of the anode hole.
Drill deep anode holes with rotary type drilling equipment that circulates the drillings to surface by
water (or water/mud mixture) through the hollow center of the drill pipe.
Do NOT use equipment that drills a dry hole or uses a hammering mechanism.
Casing requirements:
Case the top 6.5 meters as required to maintain hole integrity through poorly consolidated surface
soils and PVC casing can be used.
Do not install anodes inside any cased section of the hole unless approved otherwise by CSD.
Use cement plugs to seal lost circulation areas. Do not use casing (the casing will later corrode,
and the coke breeze backfill will dissipate into the formation).
If a water table is reached, casing can be installed to the top of the water table, but all anodes
should be installed below the top of the water table to facilitate equalized current loading on the
anodes.
Contractor Supervision and craft men involved in the job are to comply with all safety rules and
regulations applicable to this procedure.
Contractor to secure the necessary work permits and clearances from Saudi Aramco Operations
and prior to start any activities that are involved in this procedure.
Provide the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and appropriate tools.
