WORSHIP CALENDAR A s many of you will have noticed Easter was relatively
late this year with Easter Day on the 17th of April. For
those of you who wonder why it moves around it is due to
Sunday 1st May 3rd of Easter
2 early branches of Christianity disagreeing over Easter and
Skelton 9:30am Family Communion it annoying an English king. The problem was solved here
Shipton 10:00am Family Worship in Yorkshire. It was the year 664 and King Oswiu of
Northumbria was confused. His court used two different

definitions of Easter. At the end of Lent every year half his
court swapped their drab Lenten clothes for festive Easter
Sunday 8th May 4th of Easter wear and started to party and celebrate while the other
half were still in Lent. He decided that one Easter day was

Shipton 10:00am Family Communion solution. He chose a nun by the name of Hilda (a name
Linton 10:50am VE Day Service you may recognise) to oversee the proceedings. The Synod
was held at the double monastery of Streobshalh better
known today as Whitby Abbey. Both sides set out their
Sunday 15th May 5th of Easter arguments for when Easter should be celebrated. At the end
Skelton 9:30am Morning Prayer of the debate the decision was taken by the king in favour
of the Roman definition over the local Celtic one for two
Shipton 10:00am Family Communion reasons. The first was belief that the Roman Christians
followed the teaching of St Peter who was the holder of
Sunday 22nd May 6th of Easter the keys to the kingdom of heaven. The second was that
most of Europe were followers of Roman Christianity and

Shipton 10:00am Family Communion So I hear you ask, “what is the definition of Easter”?
It is all to do with the spring equinox and full moons. The
Linton 11:00am Messy Church
spring equinox is on 21st March and Easter day on the
Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. To
Sunday 29th May 7th of Easter take the two extremes; full moon Saturday 22nd March
then Easter Day is 23rd March or the full moon is Monday
Skelton 10:00am Benefice Communion 19th April and Easter Day is the 25th April. Simples!!
As a result of that all of May this year is in the season
Sunday 5th June Feast of Pentecost of Easter and so each Sunday one of our readings is taken
from the sequel to Luke’s Gospel, the Acts of the Apostles.
Skelton 9:30am Family Communion In the time between the Resurrection and the Ascension we

Newton 11:00am Holy Communion will hear about the visions of Peter which lead him to
seeing Christianity being open to all and not a chosen few.
We will listen to Paul’s road to Damascus conversion and
