(Riccard
: «Domini reges Franciae frequenter reges orientales commoverunt contra Saracenos, postea non
venientes eos dimittebant in tribulatione guerrae ; sed dicatis sibi, quod, quando mare transiverit, statim
me videbit ad suum beneplacitum cum XXX millibus armatorum».
Georgian King George V the Brilliant accepts his French counterpart's petition for assistance.
A letter from Georgia’s king George V the Brilliant to the king of France, Philip of Valois VI. In the
letter the Georgian king writes: “French kings often call on Eastern kings to fight against the Saracen
(Muslims), but then usually fail to fulfill their promise and leave their allies on the battle field to face
the enemy alone. Correspondingly, inform me when you intend to cross the sea and I along with my
30,000 soldiers will immediately meet you as you arrive.“
It is obvious from this letter that Georgia was an independent country which directed its policy without
the Mongols’ influence. The King carried out military reform brilliantly. If the king was ready to send
30, 000 soldiers abroad then he had left at least same number to remain in the country for defensive
purposes. As a result, it can be concluded that Georgia’s military strength was impressive during George
V the Brilliant’s rule.
