friend heard that the merchant was ill. So, he set out one afternoon to visit him.
“I must make my friend happy”, he said to himself. “But I must be careful about
what I say. First, I’ll ask, “Well, how are you today?” He’ll answer “Fine, thank
you” I’ll ask about his food, he’ll say, “Rice without salt”, and I’ll say, “That’s
good for you. I hope it helps you” Then I’ll ask, “Who is your doctor?” and he
will tell me that such and such a person is his doctor, and I’ll say, “I hope God
will help him with his work””
The deaf man reached the merchant’s house and sat down near his bed. The
merchant was very sick and did not want to meet any visitors. “My dear friend,
how are you?”, asked the deaf, “I have a bad fever”, answered the merchant, “I
can’t sleep at night.” Then the deaf man asked, “What do you eat?” By this time,
the patient was angry, “The dust of the earth” he answered. “That’s good for
you”, said the deaf man. “Hope it helps you. And tell me, who is your doctor?”,
“Doctor?”, cried the merchant, “Death himself”
25
“Oh, that’s fine”, said the deaf, “Hope God will help him with his work.” And he
returned home.

Activity 1: Read the lesson ‘A Day in the Ashram’ and complete the activities.
A DAY IN THE ASHRAM
- C.F. Andrews
Words cannot picture to you the beauty of Shantiniketan. Our own poet and
teacher, whom we call Gurudeva, has named it in his song, “The darling of our
hearts,” and it is worthy of the name.
If I were to describe to you one day in the Ashram with the boys, that would
perhaps best bring home to you its inner beauty. Long before sunrise, like the
birds in our own amloki groves, our boys are awake. The choristers are the first
to rise, and they go round the Ashram, singing their morning hymn. The beauty
of the sound in the silent morning air and the sense of joy and reverence which it
brings, give peace to the soul.
After an interval, each boy takes his asan, his square of carpet, into the fields and
sits down on it to meditate in his own place alone. Later on, before the school
work begins, the boys all stand together in the shade of the trees and sing their
hymn.
Till about half past ten the work of the school goes on. We have no classrooms.
The boys sit with their teachers, in the open air, under the trees. A group of eight
or ten boys are seated round the teacher, asking him questions. Very few books
are used. A greater part is carried on through conversation. The boys soon learn
to open out all their difficulties to their teachers, and the teachers get keenly
interested in the boys’ questions and answers. Such living education can never be
dull. When the morning work is over, the boys bathe and go to their meal.
About two o’clock in the afternoon the classes begin again; but at this time the
work is chiefly with the hands as well as with the mind. Handiwork is practised,
and the boys’ own natural tastes are very soon discovered. Some prefer carpentry;
others prefer mechanical work; others enjoy spinning and weaving; others become
skilled draftsmen or painters; others are musicians.
There is very little book-work in the afternoon. School is over at about four
o’clock, and then there is a rush to get first into the great open fields for football.
68
Our Shantiniketan boys are famous everywhere for their sports and games. In the
evening, at sunset, they sit down once more, to meditate in silence.
As night comes, fairy tales are told; short dramas are recited; our Gurudeva’s
songs are sung; and different school gatherings are held.
By nine o’ clock all are glad to retire to rest; and again, the choristers go round
the Ashram singing their last evening hymn. Their faces tell the story of their joy
and their freedom. There is no freer life in India than the life of our children at
Shantiniketan.
Activity 1.1: Read and discuss your responses with your partner. Then

Activity 3: Read the text given below. (Summary of the lesson ‘Luther
Burbank’)
Luther Burbank was a simple, hard-working scientist. He
became a famous U.S. plant breeder. He was a master gardener,
a skilled plant grower, a talented and patient breeder. He was
able to turn a yellow flower into red, he produced seedless
plums, he made the desert cactus grow a thousand times
faster. He developed white blackberry and he could grow 500
different varieties of cherries on a single tree.
Luther Burbank was born on March 7, 1849. He was brought
up on a farm in the State of Massachusetts. He learnt the art of growing crops
and plants in his childhood. He was greatly influenced by Charles Darwin’s book
“Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication”.
At the age of 21 he became a market gardener. He grew high-quality vegetables
on his farms and sold them. He developed a new variety of potato, which has
become famous as ‘Idaho Potato’. Luther Burbank adopted three basic techniques
for his experiments.
By adopting the technique of grafting he was able to grow several thousand
75
varieties of fruits in an acre on his farm. He could even grow 526 kinds of apples
on a single tree. He would graft a twig from a young plant to a fruit- bearing tree
and get fruits in just two or three years.
Burbank conducted more than 10,000 experiments with 600 kinds of plants.
He was successful in developing an improved cherry, a thornless blackberry, a
thornless cactus and a peach tree which could withstand freezing temperatures.
Many a time his attempts failed. But he was neither disappointed nor disheartened.
He had so much devotion and perseverance, that he continued to work. Burbank’s
achievements can be equated with the present-day technological innovations.

Activity 4: Read the passage and answer the questions:
A young girl had a puppy. The puppy lived in a small kennel in front of the girl’s
house. There was a hole in the compound wall. Every day, the puppy gazed out
that hole. It saw the young girl and her friends on their cycles. They all shouted
and laughed as they raced down the street.
One day the puppy had an idea. “I want to ride a cycle too!” the puppy told the
girl. The girl loved the puppy, so she agreed. She found a small toy bike for the
puppy. The puppy jumped onto the cycle. But riding the cycle was difficult. The
puppy’s paws couldn’t hold the handle bars. Its hind paws couldn’t even reach the
pedals. And soon, it was even tough for the puppy to breathe!
The girl put the puppy back in its kennel. It whined and cried and looked very sad.
“I can’t ride a cycle!” the puppy said sadly. “What good am I?”
The girl smiled. “You are as good as exactly one puppy!” she said. “And that is
an excellent thing to be! You can play all day long and roll around on the grass! I
don’t know many girls or boys who can do that!”
76
Now, answer these questions:
1. What does the girl do when the puppy tells her it wants to ride a cycle?
• She is surprised that the puppy can talk.
• She laughs at the thought of a puppy riding a bike.
• She wants to make the puppy ‘s dream come true.
• She thinks the puppy is silly for wanting to ride a cycle.
2. What is the theme of the story?
• Puppies can’t ride cycles and they shouldn’t try.
• Puppies are better riders than people.
• Everyone is good at different things.
• The girl should work harder to teach the puppy to ride the cycle.
3. What lesson is the girl teaching her puppy when she says “ You can play all
day long and roll around on the grass! I don’t know many girls or boys who
can do that!”?

Activity 4: Read the following biography
Harekala Hajabba was born in the poor rural area of New Padpu, Karnataka. He
was born in a very poor family. At the age of 6 itself, he started working as a
beedi-maker with his mother to help his family.
Being born in a very poor family, Harekala Hajabba could never go to school.
Due to lack of education, he had to face many problems in life. Therefore, despite
being illiterate, he understood the importance of education very well. After
growing up, Harekala Hajabba started selling oranges. From this he used to earn
about 150 rupees a day. Harekala Hajabba was somehow making a living for his
family by selling oranges.
Once a foreign couple came to Harekala Hajabba to collect oranges. The couple
asked Harekala Hajabba the price of the oranges. Since Hajabba doesn’t know
English, he could not explain them the price of oranges. At that moment he felt
helpless and took a strong vow that he would do something for the education of
the children of his village, so that no child would face such a situation in future.
At that time Harekala Hajabba did not even have his own house to live in, yet
he started a small school in a mosque in the year 1999, by investing all his hard-
earned money.
In the beginning, only a few children used to come to school, but gradually the
number of children is increased. By the year 2004, Harekala Hajabba collected
84
more money and bought a small land for the school. However, after investing
all the accumulated money, he could only buy a land. He sought help from the
politicians and the wealthy people to build the school.
Many people helped Harekala Hajabba, while some of them even rebuked him
from afar. However, by adding little money and taking help from the people,
Harekala Hajabba started the primary school in the year 2004.
There were 4 teachers in the school to teach the children. Later on he developed it
into a secondary school in an area of more
than 1 acre. Harekala Hajabba dreams
of setting up a pre-university college in his village later.
Harekala Hajabba may never go to school himself, but he understood the
importance of education and devoted everything to the education of children.
Social activist and writer Ismat Pazir has published a book on Hajabba’s life titled
‘Harekala Hajabba Jeevan Charitra’. Hajabba’s life history has been included in
the syllabus of Mangalore University.
Hajabba has received many awards for his achievements. In November 2012, the
British Broadcasting Corporation published an article on Hajabba with the title
‘Indian education dream of the illiterate fruit-seller’. Harekala Hajabba has been
honoured with the ‘Real Heroes’ award by CNN IBN and Reliance Foundation.
Harekala Hajabba was named Person of the Year by Kannada Prabha, a leading
Kannada language newspaper. In the year 2020, the Government of India selected
Harekala Hajabba to be honoured with the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth
highest civilian award. However, due to Covid-19, he was given this honour in
the year 2021.
