“Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have the right to do
and what is right to do.” –Potter Stewart
"In law a man is guilty when he violates the rights of others. In ethics,
he is guilty if he only thinks of doing so." –(Immanuel Kant).
The term ‘ethics’ corresponds to the Greek word “ethica”. Ethica is derived from the word “ethos”
meaning ‘character’, ‘customs’, ‘usage’ or ‘habits’. Ethics has been described as a ‘moral
philosophy’. The word “moral” comes from the “Latin” word “mores” which signifies customs or
habits.

Consequences of Absence of Ethics
Immanuel Kant
• Kant argues in his book "Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals" that without
ethics, society would devolve into chaos and moral anarchy.
• He argues that ethical principles and moral duties are necessary for maintaining order,
encouraging cooperation, and protecting human dignity.
• The absence of ethics, according to Kant, would result in a breakdown of social harmony,
resulting in conflicts, exploitation, and a disregard for individual rights and well-being.
Normative Ethics/मानक नैतिकिा
Normative ethics includes a set of Moral Standards that determine the Right or Wrong conduct. It
is also called Prescriptive Ethics. मानक नैतिकिा में नैतिक मानक ं का एक समूह शातमल है ज सही र्ा

Deontology/ड नट लॉजी
• Deontology is duty-based ethics. (It comes from the Greek word deon, meaning duty). ड नट लॉजी

Criteria used for evaluating actions are also known as moral standards. Many

Descriptive Ethics: Scholars such as David Hume have studied descriptive ethics,
which is concerned with describing and analysing existing moral beliefs,
practices, and behaviours within a specific culture or society. Rather than
prescribing how people should behave morally, it seeks to provide an objective
understanding of how they actually behave.
It is a value-free approach to ethics. It does not make judgments about the
morality of the practices and beliefs but simply describes the practices observed
in the different groups or cultures.
Normative ethics, which has been extensively studied by scholars such as John Stuart
Mill, focuses on providing guidelines for determining what is right and wrong. Its goal
is to create ethical theories and principles that will aid individuals in making moral
judgments and decisions. The goal of normative ethics is to establish moral standards
and assess the morality of human behaviour.
