인상주의(Impressionism)의 등장 배경
사회 · 경제적 측면
프랑스 혁명 이후 자유주의 사상이 대두되면서 개인의 개성,
주관을 강조.
산업혁명 이후 경제구조가 근대화되면서 종교나 왕권을 위한
그림이 아닌 순수 감상 목적의 미술이 주목.
과학 발달적 측면
카메라의 발명으로 미술이 재현을 포기하면서 추상화되기 시작.
광학, 색채학의 발달로 빛을 분석하여 표현에 적용.
튜브물감의 발명으로 야외 제작이 가능하게 됨.

종합주의 (Synthetisme)의 특징
종합주의란 고갱을 중심으로 외형의 세계를 재현
하기보다는 상상과 실제의 경험이 종합된, 보이지
않고 감추어진 세계의 의미를 표현했던 유파.
‘종합’은 인상주의의 색채 분할과 그 기법의 해체적,
분석적인 경향에 대한 대항으로서의 종합을 의미.
고갱은 빛의 효과를 탐구하는 데 전념한 인상주의
의 방식이 지극히 피상적이며, 사상이나 지적 사고
를 소홀히 여긴다는 한계를 지적.
그는 인상주의가 해체한 색채의 단편들을 강한 윤곽
선으로 두른 넓은 면으로 종합.

작가의 주체성에 기반을 둔 형태와 색채를 회복하고
궁극적으로는 주관과 객관의 종합을 목표로 함.
