Through this Vachana Basavanna wants to tell us that we give a lot of prominence to physical
things and forget the spiritual things. Constructing a temple does not make us great devotees
nor it is a sign of devotion, when God himself resides in our hearts. God does not appreciate
these physical attributes but appreciates the true devotion more. The soul lodged in the
human body is in fact a part of God. Therefore according to the poet, a true devotion is better
and it is permanent than any apulent building which is in fact perishable.

concentration camps and tortured to death. The Nazis had no compassion for women and
children too. Families were split with men somewhere and women elsewhere. They were
kept in very pathetic condition without food or attire. In fact children were made to stand in
freezing rain before being sent to the gas chamber. After the prisoners died, they were all
dumped and buried together in mass graves. Thus the Nazis treated the Jews with utmost
cruelty and barbarism.

What are the causes for soil erosion? What are the methods of prevention suggested by Sir. C.V.
Raman?
Soil erosion occurs due to various reasons. Cutting up and washing away of the earth,
formation of deep ravines which make agriculture impossible, sudden bursts of excessively
heavy rain resulting in large run off of surplus water, shape of land, removal of natural
protective coast of vegetation, and the existence of ruts cause soil erosion. Soil erosion can
be prevented by terracing of the land, construction of bunds to check the flow of water, the
practice of contour cultivation and planting of appropriate type of vegetation.

row the boat alone in the lake. He untied the boat and rowed away very quietly, which is an
act of stealth. Therefore he was guilty of his act. The guilt inside him, made the nature look
like a menacing which made him quickly return the boat to its original place. guilty of his act.

How does the poet bring out the agony and desperation of the female bird when the male bird was
killed?
When the female sarus crane saw that her mate was shot down by the bird killers, she flew
about crying. She cried bitterly when his body was stuffed into a bag and carried away. She
went on circling the sky in deep sorrow over disgraceful end, she sat where her mate had
fallen and cried and sent her sorrow to heaven in a telegraphic mode. She kissed a few
feathers of her mate which the wind did not carry and in desperate hope, sat on those
feathers hoping to bring back the life of her mate. She pined and grieved so much that God
took her away and reunited her soul with that of her mate, very far away from the mortal
world. The female sarus crane was the epitome of marital fidelity.

The purpose of life is to lead a life of purpose and its meaning is to give meaning to life. But what is
meant by purpose and meaning? They simply mean the “big picture” vision, chief aim, or care values
that all other goals are subordinate to. For example, our purpose might be to leave the world a
better place than the way we found it, or to make everyone we meet happier. Either of these
purposes would be noble and achievable. How can we help to create a better world or make others
happy? One way is to refusing to steal, criticize, gossip or argue. Another way would be to treat
others with kindness, generosity, honest and respect. Our goal should be not merely to be good, but
to be good for something. To have value that we offer to the world. Our purpose is the path we
follow; it’s broad paint brush that colours all areas of our life.
Questions:
1. What is meant by purpose and meaning?

19. Find the middle term of the A.P. 6, 13, 20, …, 216.
Solution:
The given A.P. is 6, 13, 20, …, 216
Let n be the number of terms, d = 7, a = 6, an = 216
an = a + (n – 1)d
∴ 216 = 6 + (n – 1).7
216 – 6 = (n – 1)7
210 ÷ 7 = n – 1 ⇒ 30 + 1 = n
⇒ n = 31
Middle term = (n+12)th term
= (31+12)=(322) = 16th term of the A.P.
∴ a16 = a + 15d = 6 + 15 × 7 = 111
OR
Find whether -150 is a term of the A.P. 17, 12, 7, 2, … ?
Solution:
Given: 1st term, a = 17
Common difference, d = 12 – 17 = -5
nth term, an = – 150 (Let)
∴ a + (n – 1) d = – 150
17 + (n – 1)(-5) = – 150
(n – 1) (-5) = – 150 – 17 = – 167
(n − 1) = −167 ÷ −5
n = 167 ÷ 5 + 1 = (167+5) ÷ 5 =172 ÷ 5
n = 172 ÷ 5 …[Being not a natural number
∴ -150 is not a term of given A.P.

21. Find the discriminant of the equation 3x2– 2x +1/3= 0 and hence find the nature of its roots.
Solution:
Given,
3x2– 2x +1/3= 0
Here, a = 3, b = – 2 and c = 1/3
Since, Discriminant = b2 – 4ac
= (– 2)2 – 4 × 3 × 1/3
= 4 – 4 = 0.
Hence, the given quadratic equation has two equal real roots.
The roots are -b/2a and -b/2a.

sin 30° = 1/2
cos 30° = √3/2
sin 60° = √3/2
cos 60°= 1/2
Now, substitute the values in the given problem
sin 60° cos 30° + sin 30° cos 60°

7. How do you explain the red colour during sunrise and sunset?
Ans.: During sunrise and sunset sun will be in the horizon and the rays of the sun travel slantly
through the earth‘s atmosphere to a greater distance. The blue colour having shorter wave
length is scattered to a larger extend sideways and it is taken off from the vision of the
observer. However the longer wave length red light under goes less scattering and reaches the

Ans.: Solenoid is a copper coil wound in the form of a cylinder having a large number of turns.
When current is passed through a solenoid, it acts as magnet, with one end acting as north pole
and other as south pole. The magnetic lines of force inside a solenoid are parallel indicating the
presence of uniform magnetic field. If a soft iron core is inserted in a solenoid, then it becomes
an electro magnet.

because the reaction is exothermic and liberates large amount of heat. If water is added to acid
it may resulting damages to the glass instruments and burning injuries to the person.
