Allerdings:
Eine Erkältung kann das Immunsystem schwächen. Dann haben Grippeviren
leichteres Spiel.
Irrtum Nr. 5: „Antibiotika helfen gegen Schnupfen." Sie helfen nur gegen
bakterielle Infektionen. Erkältungen aber werden durch Viren ausgelöst: Hier sind
Antibiotika wirkungslos.

Sociolinguistics is the descriptive study of the effect of any and all aspects
of society, including cultural norms, expectations, and context, on the way
language is used, and society's effect on language. It differs from sociology of
language, which focuses on the effect of language on society. Sociolinguistics
overlaps considerably with pragmatics and is closely related to linguistic
anthropology.
The social aspects of language were in the modern sense first studied by
Indian and Japanese linguists in the 1930s, and also by Louis Gauchat in
Switzerland in the early 1900s, but none received much attention in the West until
much later. The study of the social motivation of language change, on the other
hand, has its foundation in the wave model of the late 19th century. The first
attested use of the term sociolinguistics was by Thomas Callan Hodson in the title
of his 1939 article "Sociolinguistics in India" published in Man in India.
Sociolinguistic interview
Fundamental concepts
Social network
Understanding language in society means that one also has to understand the
social networks in which language is embedded. A social network is another way
of describing a particular speech community in terms of relations between
individual members in a community. A network could be loose or tight depending
on how members interact with each other.

British English
The dialect regions of the United States are most clearly marked along the
Atlantic littoral, where the earlier settlements were made. Three dialects can be
defined: Northern, Midland, and Southern. Each has its subdialects.
The Northern dialect is spoken in New England. Its six chief subdialects
comprise northeastern New England (Maine, New Hampshire, and eastern
Vermont), southeastern New England (eastern Massachusetts, eastern Connecticut,
and Rhode Island), southwestern New England (western Massachusetts and
western Connecticut), the inland north (western Vermont and upstate New York),
the Hudson Valley, and metropolitan New York.
The Midland dialect is spoken in the coastal region from Point Pleasant, in
New Jersey, to Dover, in Delaware. Its seven major subdialects comprise the
Delaware Valley, the Susquehanna Valley, the Upper Ohio Valley, northern West
Virginia, the Upper Potomac and Shenandoah, southern West Virginia and eastern
Kentucky, western North Carolina and South Carolina, and eastern Tennessee.
The Southern dialect area covers the coastal region from Delaware to South
Carolina. Its five chief subdialects comprise the Delmarva Peninsula, the Virginia
Piedmont, northeastern North Carolina (Albemarle Sound and Neuse Valley), Cape
Fear and Pee Dee valleys, and the South Carolina Low Country, around
Charleston.
These boundaries, based on those of the Linguistic Atlas of the United States
and Canada, are highly tentative. To some extent these regions preserve the
traditional speech of southeastern and southern England, where most of the early
colonists were born.
The boundary with Canada nowhere corresponds to any boundary between
dialects, and the influence of United States English is strong, being felt least in the
Maritime Provinces and Newfoundland and Labrador. Nevertheless, in spite of the
effect of this proximity to the United States, British influences are still potent in
some of the larger cities; Scottish influences are well sustained in Ontario. Canada
remains bilingual. Less than one-fourth of its people, living mostly in the province
of Quebec, have French as their mother tongue.
Although New Zealand lies over 1,000 miles away, much of the English
spoken there is similar to that of Australia. The blanket term Austral English is
sometimes used to cover the language of the whole of Australasia, but this term is
far from popular with New Zealanders because it makes no reference to New
Zealand and gives all the prominence, so they feel, to Australia. Between North
and South Islands there are observable differences. In particular, Maori, which
remains a living language (related to Tahitian, Hawaiian, and the other
Austronesian [Malayo-Polynesian] languages), has a greater number of speakers
and more influence in North Island.
African English
Africa is one of the world’s most multilingual areas, if people are measured
against languages. Upon a large number of indigenous languages rests a slowly
changing superstructure of world languages (Arabic, English, French, and
Portuguese). The problems of language are everywhere linked with political,
social, economic, and educational factors.

Weltmeisterschaften in Ecuador. Im Freistilschwimmen über 200 Meter schlug
Michael Groß acht Hundertstelsekunden vor dem amerikanischen Weltrekordler
Ambrose Gaines an und wurde Weltmeister. Seitdem gewann er mehrere
Medaillen bei den Olympischen Spielen in Los Angeles und hält einige
Weltrekorde. Kein anderer deutscher Schwimmer war je so erfolgreich. Knapp

The boy appeared to be 11 or 12 years old, was naked except for what was
left of a tattered shirt, and he made no sounds other than animal-like noises. He
seemed to have survived on his own for years in the wild. Probably he had been
abandoned originally, but at what age or by whom could not be ascertained.
Not long after, the boy's education was assigned to an eager educator, the
creative and dedicated Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard. Itard set up an ambitious
programme with goals that included social as well as language training. The Wild
Boy was given the name 'Victor' by Itard and his education began with intense
work that involved a variety of games and activities that Itard designed to socialize
Victor and make him aware of the world around him. These had a dramatic
positive effect.
Speech training with Victor proved to be very frustrating for Itard. It centred
around simply trying to get Victor to repeat some words and speech sounds. Victor
first had to learn from where speech sounds were originating before he could
associate such sounds with language.
Victor first learned to repeat the sound 'li', apparently his personal
contraction of 'Julie', the name of the daughter of an assistant at the institute,
Madame Guerin. In addition, he would repeat the phrase 'Oh Dieu!' (Oh God!),
which he picked up from Madame Guerin. He also learned to say the word for milk
(lait in French). With regard to this word, however, Itard noted that Victor would
generally repeat it when given milk, but would not really use the word in a
communicative sense, such as in asking for milk. On the other hand, Victor was
able to comprehend speech in the form of commands for household chores, and
made a specific sound each time he wanted a ride.
Following an insightful idea, he then set about teaching Victor the letters of
the alphabet using letters on individual cards. The boy learned the milk word lait
again, but this time in the form of alphabetic letters. Victor was able to spell it out,
at first backwards, then upside down, since that is how he had first seen it from
across the table. Of his own accord, he later picked out those letters and seemed to
use them to spell out a request for milk when he was taken on a visit by Itard to a
friend's home. However, it is possible that Victor may have simply been showing
off his new toys, the cards, to Itard's friend.
as 'eat', 'drink', 'touch', and 'throw'. Each of these words was written on a
card for him. In the beginning, he communicated with others using the word cards.
Later he was able to write the words himself, from memory.
In less than a year, Itard was able to issue a report stating, in effect, that
Victor's senses, memory, and attention were intact, that he had the ability to
compare and judge, and that he could read and write to some extent. Victor's
speech did not improve, however, and it was speech that Itard was concerned with.
Unfortunately, he did not follow up on teaching reading, which could have
benefited Victor greatly.
Itard devoted five years to Victor. Near the end of that period, he tried once
again to teach the boy to speak. These attempts failed too; soon afterwards Itard
decided to end his work with Victor. He arranged for Victor to live in a house with
Madame Guerin. Victor lived there for 18 years, continuing to be mute until his
death in 1828 at the age of about 38.
Genie: raised in isolation
While the case of Victor may have been that of simple child abandonment, it
is quite different from enforced seclusion, where children are isolated from even
the outside environment and mistreated. One such well-documented case is that of
a girl whom researchers called Genie.
.Genie (a pseudonym) was discovered in the early 1970s in the Los Angeles
area of California. She was 13 years old and had been locked in a small room in
her house by her father for the preceding 12 years! During the day she had been
kept naked except for a harness that held her to an infant's toilet seat. At night she
was put into a restraining sleeping bag and placed in a covered crib that was in
effect a cage. She was fed but never spoken to. Her father beat her frequently with
a wooden stick and growled at her like a dog while doing so. Other than a couple
of plastic raincoats, empty thread spools, an occasional magazine, and some empty
containers that she was given to play with, she had nothing much to look at (the
small windows in her room were covered by curtains), little to touch, little to do.
Genie's mother eventually escaped, taking the child with her. It was in this
way that the case was discovered by the authorities. As for the father, he
committed suicide on the day he was to be put on trial for mistreating the child.
At the time of her discovery, Genie was in a pitiful physical condition and
appeared to have no language. Based on the information later provided by her
mother, the girl had started to begin to acquire language just prior to her
confinement, when she was around 20 months of age.
Like Victor, during her first few weeks of freedom Genie was alert and
curious. But, unlike Victor, she displayed some ability to understand and even
imitate (although poorly) some individual words, such as 'mother', 'red', and
'bunny'. However, except for such words, she had little if any comprehension of
grammatical structures. Generally, she responded only to gestures and to the
intonation of words. Batteries of psychological tests indicated that her cognitive
abilities were little more than those of a 2-year-old, with her language displaying
many of the characteristics of 2-year-olds as they go through the initial stages of
language learning.
After just a few months of care, however, Genie changed considerably. She
grew, gained weight and strength, and was able to go on long walks. While her
original speech production had been limited to a few utterances such as 'No-more'
and 'Stoppit', by the end of a few months she had acquired the words for hundreds
of objects! She had an intense curiosity about the names of things in the world
around her.
Genie responds linguistically and socially
After about a year had passed since she was first discovered, Genie was
evaluated again on her language ability. She was tested, for example, on a variety
of syntactic structures, such as her understanding of simple negation, and could
respond correctly to sentences like 'Show me the bunny that does not have a carrot'
as opposed to 'Show me the bunny that has a carrot'. She was tested on her
understanding of adjectives, such as 'big' and 'little' ('Point to the big circle'). She
was required to place objects with respect to other objects, e.g. 'in', 'under', 'next
to', 'behind', to see if she understood the relationships expressed by those
prepositions. It was found that Genie's ability to understand speech had improved
quite rapidly, although her progress in speech production was very slow and
continued to be slow.
Genie's language learning was studied for about eight years, after which
time she made little progress. Her language ability, both in terms of understanding
and production, remained well below normal and her speech continued to be
ungrammatical. Genie, like Victor, was not able to acquire a normal level of
language despite receiving a great amount of care, attention, instruction, and
linguistic input.
Genie was finally placed in a home for retarded adults, where she now lives.
This was the end of the scientific collection of data on Genie's linguistic or other
development.

Chomsky suggests that there are so-called “faculties of the mind” each of
which having its own processing procedures. Chomsky claims that there could be a
logical faculty, which consists of a set of logical ideas and that there could be a
moral and ethical faculty, with a set of related ideas. Of particular interest to us is
the set of ideas that he suggests to serve a language function, the language faculty.
These language ideas are said by Chomsky to be innate in all human beings, i.e.
they are universal, and are the basis on which human grammars are constructed.
Virtually an infinite number of grammars (enough to account for any human
language) can be constructed from this finite set of ideas. It is this innate set of
language ideas that Chomsky refers to as the Language Faculty or Universal
Grammar ( UG ) or as it was in the past referred to it as the ‘Language
Acquisition Device‘ or LAD.
One of the principles of the grammatical phrase structure is indeed that the
head of a phrase must be the same category as the whole phrase, so that a Verb
Phrase has a head Verb not a Noun, a Noun Phrase has a head Noun not a Verb,
and so on. All phrases in all languages must have heads of the same type as the
phrase itself. Universal Grammar theory then claims that it is a property of a
human language that all its phrases obey the principle that the head of the phrase
is the same type of expression as the whole phrase.
But languages differ markedly in word order like Verb-Object order and
Object-Verb order that distinguishes English, for example, from Japanese. In
English the Verb is followed by an object Noun Phrase, e.g. bought a book. In
Japanese the Verb is preceded by the object Noun Phrase, e.g. hon-o-katta ( book
bought). In UG this two-way choice is a parameter specifying the position of
object Noun Phrases within the Verb Phrase; languages must have Verb Phrases
that are either VO or OV order. Universal Grammar ascribes all these order
variations to a single parameter. The word order differences among these four
types of lexical phrase amount to whether the head comes first or last in the phrase.
This is called the ‘head’ parameter because it concerns the location of the head
of the phrase in relation to other phrases within it – English is a head-first language
while Japanese is a head-last language.

1. Теоретичне питання: Pragmatics as a linguistic discipline. Main notions of
micro and macro pragmatics
The subjective factor is the human view of the world, the subjective way of
organizing the language code in Communication, which is based on the cognitive-
psychological connections of communicators in the process of interaction through
language. This understanding of the subjective factor makes it possible to define
the essence of linguistic pragmatics as follows:

The speech act theory considers language as a sort of action rather than a
medium to convey and express. The contemporary Speech act theory developed
by J. L. Austin a British philosopher of languages, he introduced this theory in
1975 in his well-known book of ‘How do things with words’. Later John Searle
brought the aspects of theory into much higher dimensions. This theory is often
used in the field of philosophy of languages. Austin is the one who came up with
the findings that people not only uses that language to assert things but also to do
things. And people who followed him went to greater depths based on this point.
The theory emphasis that the utterances have a different or specific meaning
to its user and listener other than its meaning according to the language. The theory
further identify that there are two kinds of utterances, they are called constative
and performative utterances. In his book of ‘How do things with words’ Austin
clearly talks about the disparities between the constative and performative
utterances.
A constative utterances is something which describes or denotes the
situation, in relation with the fact of true or false.
Example: The teacher asked Olivia whether she had stolen the candy. Olivia
replies “mmmmmm”. Here the utterances of Olivia describes the event in pact of
answering her teacher whether the situation was true or false.
The performative utterances is something which do not describes anything at
all. The utterances in the sentences or in the part of sentences are normally
considered as having a meaning of its own. The feelings, attitudes, emotions and
thoughts of the person performing linguistic act are much of a principal unit here.
Example: Bane and Sarah have been dating for the past four years. One fine
evening Bane took Sarah to the most expensive restaurant in town. And he ordered
the most expensive wine available in the restaurant. Then he moved closer to her
and asked her that “ will you marry me?”. Sarah burst with contentment and
replied “I will”. Here the “I will” of Sarah express her feelings, attitudes and
emotional towards the context. This utterances have its specific meaning only in
relation to it specific context.
Further Austin divides his linguistic act into three different categories.
They are:
1. Locutionary act – This is the act of saying something. It has a
meaning and it creates an understandable utterly to convey or express
2. Illocutionary act – It is performed as an act of saying something
or as an act of opposed to saying something. The illocutionary utterance has a
certain force of it. It well well-versed with certain tones, attitudes, feelings, or
emotions. There will be an intention of the speaker or others in illocutionary
utterance. It is often used as a tone of warning in day today life
3. Perlocutionary act – It normally creates a sense of consequential
effects on the audiences. The effects may be in the form of thoughts, imaginations,
feelings or emotions. The effect upon the addressee is the main charactership of
perlocutionary utterances
Communicative principles of P.G. Grice and G. Leech
Grice investigates the conditions of the organization and operation of
everyday language use irrespective of its subject matter and formulates the
cooperative principle in order to explain the logic of conversations. The
cooperative principle expresses the communicative partners’ expectations as how
to behave in conversations. Cooperative principle: Make your conversational
contribution such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted
purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged.’ According to
Grice, the most general and important purpose of conversations is effective
information exchange between participants. The cooperative principle and the four
maxims provide rational tools for it. If an utterance is intended to be processed
only in its literal meaning, then rationality, or more exactly, the fulfilling of the
cooperative principle and its maxims is self-evident. But one can ask whether it is
rational to convey information to be inferred, i.e., conversational implicatures in
addition to the literal meaning of an utterance. In the course of working out a
conversational implicature, the hearer starts out from the presumption that the
speaker behaves cooperatively and observes the cooperative principle. If a
conversational maxim seems not to be fulfilled, then this does not automatically
count as the violation of a maxim. Instead, not fulfilling a maxim attracts the
hearer’s attention to infer a further meaning intended by the speaker, i.e., not
fulfilling a maxim really is its exploitation in order to convey a conversational
implicature. To transfer a covered, additional meaning by means of the literal
meaning of an utterance explicitly expressed in a context, as well as relying on
conversational presumptions, is a very economic—but unfortunately not very
safe24—way of information transmission. Consequently, a conversational
exchange fulfilling the cooperative principle and, at the same time, exploiting a
maxim can also be considered a kind of rational behaviour.
The other classic principle of the pragmatics literature, namely the politeness
principle (Leech 1983), focuses on the social aspects of verbal communication and
prescribes for the communicative partners how to communicate in order to
maintain and care for the polite interpersonal relation between them. Leech
formulates the politeness principle both in a negative and a positive form,
prescribing what not to say as well as what to say in order to be polite. (a)
Politeness principle in the negative form: Minimize (other things being equal) the
expression of impolite beliefs. (b) Politeness principle in the positive form:
Maximize (other things being equal) the expression of polite beliefs. Leech
introduces seven specific maxims (tact, generosity, approbation, modesty,
agreement, sympathy and phatic maxims) in order to make explicit what it exactly
means to be adequately polite in a Gricean cooperative conversation. Politeness
maxims concern the relationship between two participants in conversation whom
Leech calls self (normally identified with the speaker) and other (normally
identified with the hearer). Not going into the details of the characterization of
maxims, it is worth noting that Leech does not evaluate all of the maxims as
equally important. The importance of maxims is influenced by general
considerations and expectations that (i) politeness focuses more strongly on other
than on self, (ii) negative politeness is a more weighty constraint than positive
politeness, and, furthermore, (iii) politeness towards the hearer is more important
than politeness towards a third party. Taking into account these general
considerations and fulfilling maxims result in a polite conversation.
In addition to the politeness and cooperative principles, Leech (1983)
proposes other principles as well. The irony principle makes it possible to avoid
open conflicts in social relations by using irony, the banter principle marks a
playful relatedness between participants, the interest principle prescribes to be
unpredictable, and, finally, the Pollyanna principle postulates that participants in a
conversation prefer pleasant topics to unpleasant ones.
The seven maxims established by Leech are ordered under the politeness
principle in the same way as the four Gricean maxims are supervised by the
cooperative principle. The politeness and cooperative principles are situated at the
same level in the course of language use together with the interest principle and the
Pollyanna principle. These first-order principles govern polite language use in
communication directly. The irony and banter principles cannot influence language
use directly, they rely upon the implicatures of the first-order principles,
consequently they can be considered higher-order principles. The higher-order
principles involve more indirectness in the working out of the utterance meaning.
In spite of the difference between the first-order and the higher-order principles
from the empirical point of view, all these principles have the same theoretical
status in the description: they are not subordinated to each other.
1) interlocutors
2) communicative situation
5) communicative text
The music industry continued to expand throughout the 20th century, music
labels continued to grow, relying on the sale of hard copy music, charts and
radio. Up until the late 80’s the music industry was booming all over the world.
There were shake ups, such as the introduction of the CD, which some believed
would make vinyls superfluous. However, this was not the case and the vinyl
still has a loyal group of users. Yet, the biggest change was the introduction of
the internet. The introduction of the digital MP3 in 1997 meant that hard copies
of music was no longer necessary, many people converted their musical
libraries to digital, even making their own mix tape CD’s burnt from their
computer this saw a drop in CD sales. The introduction of social media truly
changed the music industry, sites like Myspace allowed individuals to follow
their favourite artists and discover more artists.
