GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

1 Introduction
This part specifies the regulatory requirements and warning signs for general roadway
use in urban and rural areas and explains the way they are used at conventional
roadway intersections, expressway and freeway interchanges and ramps, and for
auxiliary lanes. In addition, guidance on the use of specific signs required for toll
roadways is provided.

1.1 Primary Definitions

The primary definitions used in this Part and other Parts of the Qatar Traffic Control
Manual (QTCM) are:

• ‘Must’ is used to indicate a legal requirement which must be complied with

• ‘Shall’ indicates an essential requirement of compliance with this manual
• ‘Should’ indicates a course of action that is strongly recommended
• ‘May’ is used to indicate an option that requires consideration, depending on the
circumstances

2 Regulatory Signs
2.1 General
Regulatory signs inform road users of selected traffic laws or regulations and indicate
the applicability of the legal requirements.

Regulatory signs must be installed at or near where the regulations apply. The signs
must clearly indicate the requirements imposed by the regulations and must be
designed and installed to provide adequate visibility and legibility to obtain
compliance.

Regulatory signs fall into the following classifications:

Mandatory signs - give positive instructions to drivers on what they must do

(e.g., “Keep left”).

Prohibitory signs - give instructions to drivers on what they must not do (e.g.,
“No right turn”).

2.2 Mandatory Signs

Mandatory signs tell drivers what must be done. Mandatory signs include:

• Intersection control signs

• Posted speed signs
• Movement signs

For example, the intersection control signs “STOP” and “GIVE WAY” are given special
symbolic shapes to highlight their presence. Other mandatory signs, such as the
movement type (e.g., the “keep right” sign), are circular with white symbols on a blue
background.

2.3 Prohibitory Signs

Prohibitory signs indicate a forbidden maneuver. Most prohibitory signs are circular
with a red border and generally have a red diagonal bar.

2.4 Supplementary Plates

The message of certain regulatory signs must be explained by the addition of a
supplementary plate. The size of text to be used on these plates is given in Table 2.1.

VOLUME 1 PAGE 3
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

2.5 Sign Sizes and Siting Requirements

All signs that are intended to be read from a moving vehicle must be of a sufficient
size so that drivers recognize the sign and can assimilate the information shown on
the sign in sufficient time. Therefore, signs must be of an appropriate size to the
prevailing traffic speed on the roadway to be used. On low speed roadways, such as
minor collector or local roadways, with a posted speed of 50 kilometers per hour
(kph) or less, the smallest prescribed size of a regulatory sign (normally
600 millimeters [mm] diameter) is usually adequate. On arterial roadways, where
speeds are generally higher, regulatory signs need to be larger. The largest regulatory
signs are required for expressways and freeways.

The appropriate measure of determining the correct size of signs and the minimum
clear visibility distance of signs installed on existing roadways is the 85th percentile
approach speed (i.e., the speed at or below which 85 percent of the motor vehicles
travel). The 85th percentile speed has been used in the QTCM for determining sign
sizes since it is important to have legible signs to give drivers sufficient time to react
to the sign’s message.

For new roadways, the design speed (i.e., a selected speed used to determine the
various geometric design features of a roadway) should be “self-explaining” in that all
the characteristics are safe for the design speed. Given the individual variability of
roadway users, design speed is compatible with 85th percentile speed to provide an
overall safe design.

It is imperative that drivers have an unobstructed view of traffic signs. The clear
visibility distance is the distance that should be kept clear of obstructions
(e.g., vegetation, street furniture, or other signs) to the sight line.

The majority of regulatory signs are available in either four or five sizes, with the size
and required visibility distance being dependent on the 85th percentile approach speed.
The required sign dimensions and minimum clear visibility distances are in Table 2.1.

2.5.1 Placement of Regulatory Signs

Regulatory signs are positioned at, or as near as is practical, or close to, the point at
which the sign instruction or restriction applies.

2.6 Sign Mounting

Guidance on the lateral and vertical positions of regulatory signs are in Part 1: General
Information and Index of Signs.

2.7 Legal
It is the function of regulatory signs to indicate the existence of general laws or
regulations made in the interests of road safety and operational efficiency.

2.8 STOP and GIVE WAY Signs

At conventional roadway intersections, the STOP and GIVE WAY signs are used in
conjunction with the appropriate road markings described in Part 6: Road Markings.

VOLUME 1 PAGE 7
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

2.8.1 The STOP Sign

Sign R100 requires that all vehicles stop at the
transverse road marking M200. No vehicle can then
enter the roadway if the maneuver would cause major
roadway traffic to alter its speed or direction to avoid
a crash.

STOP signs should be installed at intersections where

R100 the visibility criteria shown in Figure 2.1 and specified
in Table 2.5, cannot be met. Alternatively, for existing
intersections where the use of the GIVE WAY sign is
resulting in an excessive number of incidents, STOP
signs should be located on the right side of the
roadway and positioned between 1 meter (m) and 3 m
in advance of road marking M200, as shown in
Figure 2.2.

Where the roadway is a one-way roadway with two or

more lanes, or a one-way roadway with a central
island at the intersection, an additional STOP sign
should be positioned on the offside shoulder or central
island, as appropriate. The additional STOP sign should
be positioned between 1 m and 3 m before the road
marking.

GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

2.8.2 The GIVE WAY Sign

Signs R101 and P200 require that drivers give way to
other vehicles at the intersection ahead. Drivers should
also give way to pedestrian and bike traffic crossing
their path at that point.

The supplementary plate, sign P200, has the legend

“GIVE WAY” in English only.
R101
Sign R101 is used at:

• Priority intersections where visibility distances are

equal to or greater than those specified in Table 2.5.
It is then accompanied by road markings M202 and
M204.
P200
• Roundabouts, in which case road markings M203
and M204 are used.

• At the end of an un-signalized channelized right turn

lane at a signalized intersection where an auxiliary
lane is not provided.

This sign should be sited on the right side of the

roadway between 1 m and 3 m before the road marking
(Figure 2.2).

An additional sign should be provided on the central

median or traffic island, or on the offside shoulder
where the minor roadway is a one-way roadway.

A GIVE WAY sign must not be used at the end of a

merging lane onto a divided roadway.

Signs R101 and R102 require that drivers of vehicles

should give way to pedestrians crossing the roadway or
waiting to cross the roadway.

PAGE 10 VOLUME 1
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

Signs R101 and R102 shall be used in connection with

the pedestrian crossing Zebra markings M311.

Signs R101 and R102 shall be used before marked

pedestrian crossings that are not otherwise controlled
by STOP sign R100 or traffic signals.

R101 Signs R101 and R102 shall be located on the right side
of the roadway at least 3 m, but preferably 6 m, before
the pedestrian crossing marking M311.

An additional sign R101 and sign R102 should be

provided on the left side of the roadway when a
median island is provided before pedestrian crossing.

R102
The size of GIVE WAY sign R101 is in Table 2.7, which also specifies the text size
(x-height) of the GIVE WAY legend shown on the supplementary plate.

2.9 Mandatory Signs

This group of signs indicates to road users the actions they must take.

The sizes of mandatory signs can be found in Table 2.1.

VOLUME 1 PAGE 11
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

2.9.1 Compact Roundabout

Sign R103 supplements sign R101 at compact
roundabouts.

Sign R103 requires that the driver of a vehicle

should proceed only in a counter clockwise
direction at the compact roundabout ahead.
R103
Sign R103 should be placed on each approach to
a compact roundabout intersection at a distance
of approximately 1.5 m before the GIVE WAY
road marking. This distance may have to increase
to a maximum of 12 m if the sign would not
otherwise be clearly visible.

2.9.2 Turn Right (Left)

Sign R104-L/R is used at intersections where all
traffic must turn right (or left if the arrow symbol
is reversed).

Plates P201 or P202 may be used to supplement

sign R104-L/R where traffic must turn on joining a
R104-L/R divided roadway or one-way roadway.

The correct positioning of signs R104-L/R and

P202 for a one-way roadway is shown in
Figure 2.4.

Similarly, the correct positioning of signs

R104-L/R and P201 for a divided roadway is
P201
shown in Figure 2.5

P202

2.9.3 Single Diverge

Sign R105-L/R is used on the nose of traffic islands
within intersections where traffic may proceed
ahead or to the right only. This symbol may be
reversed.

R105-L/R

PAGE 12 VOLUME 1
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

2.9.4 Multiple Diverge

Sign R106 is used at roundabouts on the median
strip or traffic islands at each exit in the position
shown in Figure 2.3 to indicate the point of
divergence between the circulatory roadway and
the exit.

R106 Do not place sign R106 in the close vicinity of

directional guide signs (i.e., flag type signs) at
roundabouts to prevent possible obscuration of
the directional guide sign. If this cannot be
avoided, to prevent possible obscuration of any
flag type sign present, the diameter of sign R106
should be reduced from 750 mm to 600 mm for
85th percentile approach speeds of 40 kph to
60 kph. For approach speeds of 61 kph to 80 kph,
the diameter of sign R106 should be reduced
from 900 mm to 600 mm.

Figure 2.3 Siting of Multiple Diverge Sign R106

2.9.5 Turn Right (Left) Ahead

Sign R107-L/R is used on the approach to an
intersection at which traffic is required to turn right.
It shall normally be provided where the alignment
of the approach is such that the layout of the
intersection is not readily apparent.

R107-L/R The sign should normally be located approximately

50 m minimum in advance of the intersection,
(Figure 2.4 and Figure 2.5), but this may be reduced
if another intersection occurs within that length.
The symbol may be reversed.

2.9.6 Keep Right (Left)

Sign R108-L/R indicates an obstruction in the
roadway that requires the motorist to pass to
the right. It should be positioned as near as
possible to the leading edge of the obstruction.
This symbol may be reversed.

Typically, this applies to traffic islands or

R108-L/R
refuges on two-way roadways or the beginning
of the median strip where a single roadway
widens to become a divided roadway.

VOLUME 1 PAGE 15
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

2.9.7 Pass Either Side

Sign R109 indicates an obstruction, such as a
traffic island in a one-way roadway, where
the same destination may be reached by
passing either side of the obstruction.

Sign R109 should be located near the nose of

a traffic island so that there is a minimum
R109 clearance of 300 mm between the edge of
the island and the sign.

2.9.8 One-Way Roadway

Sign R110 indicates to drivers that the only
permitted direction of travel on the roadway
or portion of roadway where the sign is
erected is the direction indicated by the arrow
on the sign.

Sign R110 is erected on both sides of the

R110 roadway at the point of entry to a one-way
roadway. The signs should be carefully sited to
avoid confusion about which roadway the
signs apply to. When the one-way roadway
forms an intersection with the side of another
roadway, the sign should be sited in line with
the backline of the major roadway, although
they may be placed a short distance into the
one- way roadway if this enables advantage to
be taken of a convenient mounting point such
as a lamp column.

Repeater signs should be provided along the

length of the roadway, on alternate sides,
with a spacing between successive signs of not
more than 50 m.

If another roadway intersects and enables

traffic to enter the one-way roadway, an
additional sign should be provided
immediately downstream of the intersection.

PAGE 16 VOLUME 1
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

2.9.9 Ahead Only

Sign R111 instructs the driver to proceed only
straight ahead in the direction indicated by
the arrow on the sign.

The function of sign R111 differs from that of

the one-way roadway sign R110 in that, while
R111 sign R110 may indicate the mandatory
direction in a street and at intersections, other
directions of travel at the intersection may be
chosen. Sign R111 instructs drivers that they
have no choice other than straight ahead.

Sign R111 should be located on the right side

of a two-way roadway and on the left side of a
one-way roadway.

2.9.10 U-Turn
Sign R112 is used to notify drivers that they
are able to make a U-turn.

Sign R112 should be located in the position

shown on an existing post where possible in
the traffic median as shown in Figure 2.6. If an
R112 existing post is not available, a new post
should be provided.

An example of the use of sign R112 for a

typical U-turn arrangement is shown in
Figure 2.6.

At signalized intersections, sign R112 should

P203 be attached to the traffic signal post
supporting the signals for the traffic coming
from the opposite direction.

To prohibit U-turns by trucks, a

supplementary sign P203 should be mounted
directly below sign R112.

2.9.11 Posted Speeds

Posted Speed signs are addressed in Section 4.6.

2.9.12 Priority of Passage

Sign R113 signifies that vehicles passing the sign
have priority over oncoming traffic.

Sign R113 must not be displayed to traffic

approaching from both directions.

R113
Sign R113 should be used in combination with
supplementary plate sign P204 at the start of the
width restriction.

P204
Sign R114 signifies that oncoming traffic has
priority.

Sign R114 MUST not be displayed to traffic

approaching from both directions.

R114

PAGE 18 VOLUME 1
VOLUME 1 PART 2

Sign R114 should be used in combination with

supplementary plate sign P205 at the start of the
restriction.

These signs are used at locations where the

roadway width is restricted and indicate the
P205
stream of traffic that has priority when negotiating
the restrictions.

They may only be used where the far ends of the

restricted length are mutually visible and where
vehicle speeds are not likely to be high.

A typical signing layout for a restricted roadway

width is in Figure 2.7.

Figure 2.7 Priority Layout of Passage Signs

2.10 Prohibitory Signs

Signs in this group indicate to road users a forbidden maneuver.

Prohibitions may apply in the form of limits or to certain actions or objects. Maximum
limits, such as height or weight limits, are shown in circular signs without a red

VOLUME 1 PAGE 19
VOLUME 1 PART 2

diagonal slash. Prohibitions on actions or objects are indicated in circular signs that
include a diagonal slash.

The sizes of all prohibitory signs are detailed in Table 2.1.

2.10.1 Prohibition of Turning

Signs R115-L and R115-R are used to tell drivers
that they should not turn to the left or to the
right respectively at the approaching intersection
or entrance where these signs are displayed.

Signs R115-L and R115-R should be sited on the

R115-L left and right side of the roadway, respectively,
not more than 25 m in advance of the point
where the prohibition applies.

R115-R
Sign R116 is used to tell drivers that they should
not perform a U-turn at an intersection or break
in the median strip ahead. Sign R116 should be
located on the left and right side of the roadway,
not more than 25 m in advance of the point to
which the restriction applies. This sign should also
be repeated at the point of the prohibition.
R116
Where there is a break in the median strip in
advance of a divided roadway, sign R116 should
be sited on the median strip.

At traffic signal-controlled intersections, sign

R116 should be attached to the primary signal
post so to be clearly visible but not obscure the
signal.

Sign R116 should also be installed on secondary

signal posts so that vehicles that have stopped at
traffic control signals can see them. For this
application, the diameter of these signs may be
reduced to 300 mm, as the location of a secondary
signal may be 40 m or more from the stop line.

PAGE 20 VOLUME 1
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

2.10.2 Prohibition of Entry Signs

These signs shall normally be provided on both sides of the roadway at every point of
entry to the roadway to which the restriction applies.

Care must be taken to ensure that the signs are positioned so no confusion shall arise
as to which roadway the signs apply. To this end, the signs may be set back slightly
into the mouth of the intersection or angled toward the direction of approaching
traffic, or both.

These signs must be clearly visible at all times.

2.10.3 No Entry
Sign R117 prohibits entry to a roadway by all
vehicles unless used in combination with
exempting supplementary plate P206.

Sign R117 should be located on both the right

and left sides of a one-way roadway. Care
should be taken in siting the signs to avoid the
R117 possibility of drivers misunderstanding to
which roadway they apply.

Plate P206 is used to supplement sign R117 to

exempt certain categories of vehicles from
P206 the restriction imposed by the “No Entry”
sign.

The permitted legends are:

• Except buses
• Except buses and taxis
• Except cycles
• Except for access
• Except emergency/official vehicles

These exemptions of certain categories of

vehicle should only be implemented where it
is safe to do so.

2.10.4 No Overtaking
Sign R118 is used to prohibit overtaking on
roadways where this cannot be accomplished
by the use of road markings M116 or M117
(the Double Line System). The sizes of
“No overtaking” signs are shown in Table 2.8.

R118
Sign R118 should be located on each side of
the roadway at the start of the overtaking
restriction.

At the beginning of the restriction, it is

P207 supplemented by plate P207.

Where the restriction extends over a long

distance, sign R118 may be repeated at
intervals not exceeding 400 m, subject to it
being reduced in size as detailed in Table 2.8.
Sign R119 prohibits overtaking by trucks. Sign
R119 should be located on each side of the
roadway at the start of the overtaking
restriction.

Where the restriction extends over a long

distance, sign R119 may be repeated at
intervals not exceeding 400 m, subject to it
being reduced in size as detailed in Table 2.8.

2.10.9 No Entry by any Power-Driven Vehicle Drawing a Trailer other than a

Semi-Trailer or Single-Axle Trailer
Sign R127 gives notification that entry by any
power-driven vehicle drawing a trailer other than
a semi-trailer or a single-axle trailer is prohibited.

Sign R127 should be located on each side of the

roadway at the start of the restriction.
R127
The tonnage figure is shown on supplementary
plate P209 directly below this sign.

The addition of supplementary plate P209

ensures that the prohibition only applies if the
permissible weight of the trailer exceeds this
figure.

2.10.10 Axle Load Limit

Sign R128 prohibits entry by any un-laden vehicle,
(i.e., a vehicle not carrying any load, on which the
loading of the vehicle’s axle exceeds the figure
shown on the supplementary plate P209).

R128

2.10.11 Weight Limit

Sign R129 prohibits entry by any laden vehicle,
(i.e., a vehicle carrying a load, whose gross weight
exceeds that indicated).

It may be used to prevent access to a roadway or

area or to protect individual structures, such as
R129 bridges.

VOLUME 1 PAGE 25
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

2.10.12 Height Limit

Sign R130 prohibits entry by a vehicle exceeding
the indicated height. Where clearance is limited,
it is usual to use sign W404 (Maximum Height
Warning, see Section 3.8.7), rather than impose a
vehicle height restriction.

R130 Sign R130 must not be used as a warning sign.

The height indicated on the sign face should be at

least 100 mm less than the measured minimum
clearance on the roadway to be regulated. The
height is then expressed as the next lowest
multiple of 100 mm.

Sign R130 should either be located on both sides

of the roadway 25 m to 30 m before the limited
height structure, but may also be mounted on the
structure itself.

2.10.13 Length Limit

Sign R131 prohibits entry by any vehicle
exceeding the stated length. The length should be
expressed in multiples of 100 mm.

R131

2.10.14 Width Limit

Sign R132 prohibits entry by any vehicle
exceeding the stated width. The stated width
should be less than the minimum clear width of
the roadway in question by at least 200 mm and
should be quoted to the next lowest multiple of
100 mm.

2.10.15 Exclusion from Lanes

Sign R133 prohibits certain vehicles from using
particular lanes. The legend indicates the number
of lanes of the roadway, the class of prohibited
vehicles and the lanes from which they are
excluded. The number of lanes where the
prohibition applies may be varied.

The background/legend color of sign R133 is

R133 dependent on the type of roadway where the
sign is to be used (e.g., green and white for rural
arterials, and blue and white for expressways and
freeways).

The prohibitory symbol may be any of the signs:

• Sign R125 (No buses)

• Sign R126 (No trucks)
• Sign R127 (No vehicles drawing a trailer)
• Sign R128 (Axle load limit)
• Sign R129 (Weight limit)
• Sign R130 (Height limit)
• Sign R131 (Length limit)
• Sign R132 (Width limit)

All vehicles are permitted to use lanes where no

prohibition symbol appears.

Sign R133 should be located on the right side of

the roadway and spaced at approximately
5 kilometer (km) intervals.

2.10.16 Alternative Routes

Where signs R125, R126, R127, R128, R129, R130, R131, or R132 are used, an
alternative route must be provided. In certain cases, it may also be necessary to
provide directional guide signing before and along the alternative route (See Part 4:
Guide Signs).

2.10.17 No Bikes
Sign R134 prohibits the riding of bikes on a
roadway within a defined area.

Sign R134 may be displayed in any location where

it is required to prohibit cyclists’ movement or
access.

2.10.18 No Animals
Sign R135 prohibits animals being herded on the
highway and may ban animal-drawn vehicles
from using a particular roadway.

Sign R135 may be displayed in any position where

it is required to prohibit animal movement or
R135 access across a roadway.

2.10.19 No Pedestrians
Sign R136 prohibits pedestrians from entering a
roadway or defined area.

Sign R136 may be displayed in any position where

it is required to prohibit pedestrian movement or
access, normally across a roadway.
R136
Such places may include specific parts of a
roadway or intersection that pedestrians
otherwise may be expected to use, but are
considered risky due to the traffic management
arrangements of the roadway or intersection.

2.10.20 No Sounding of Horns

Sign R137 prohibits the driver of a vehicle from
sounding the horn or other audible devices of
their vehicle.

Sign R137 may be used in the vicinity of

hospitals, or other places where it is considered
necessary to restrict traffic noise.
R137
Sign R137 should be located on the right side of
the roadway where the prohibition is applied.
Additional signs may be placed at 150 m intervals
if the prohibition is required over some distance.

2.11 Prohibition of Waiting and Loading

Waiting and loading prohibitions on the side of a roadway generally apply from the
pavement center to the roadway boundary. The prohibitions should therefore apply
to any shoulder, bike path, or verge (i.e., the location for ground-mounted signs).

PAGE 28 VOLUME 1
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

Waiting, loading, and stopping activities are defined as follows:

• Waiting – where a vehicle is stationary to pick up or drop off passengers.

• Loading – where a commercial vehicle is stationary to load objects that are too
heavy or too bulky to be carried by hand. This does not include time for
purchasing the goods.
• Stopping activities apply where a vehicle is stationary on the roadway for
purposes other than waiting or loading.

2.11.1 No Waiting
Sign R138 prohibits waiting at specific
locations on the roadway. Sign R138 shall be
a single size of 200mm.

Sign R138 is used in combination with either

sign R139 or sign R139.1 at locations where
R138 waiting is prohibited.

In locations where the prohibition of waiting

is continuous, the “At any time” legend shall
be shown on sign R139 and shall be erected
with sign R138 above it. This sign should be
shown in both Arabic and English text.

Where waiting is prohibited only during

certain hours of the day, days of the week,
or for a consecutive number of months, the
time restriction that is in force is displayed
on sign R139.1 and shall be erected with
sign R138 above it. This sign should be
shown in both Arabic and English text.
R139
Signs R138, R139, and R139.1 must be
provided at the end points of the waiting
restriction with the sign displaying a single
arrow to indicate the direction in which the
restriction applies.

An example of the use of signs R138, R139

and R139.1 can be found in Figure 2.8.

2.14.3 Supplementary Distance Plate

Sign P212 may be used to supplement the
prohibitory signs described in Section 2.10
where no other method can be found to
provide advance warning of the prohibition
P212 or restriction, and such a warning is usually
provided by:
• Use of the appropriate triangular
warning sign (see Section 2.16), or by
• Incorporating the prohibition sign on the
directional guide signing, to show the
route on which the prohibition exists.

This sign may also be used to supplement

certain warning signs (see Section 2.16).

3 Warning Signs
3.1 General
Warning signs alert drivers to potential hazards on the roadway ahead. Warning signs
require road users to be cautious and may require reduction in speed or some other
maneuver.

For warning signs to be effective, their use should be kept to a minimum. Their
frequent use to warn of readily apparent conditions tends to bring them into
disrepute and detracts from their effectiveness.

Typical locations that may warrant the use of warning signs include:

• Intersections
• Changes in horizontal alignment
• Advance warning of traffic signals
• Converging traffic lanes
• Narrow roadways
• Steep gradients
• Roadway surface conditions
• Crossings
• Animals
• Railway crossings
• Road works (See Part 9: Traffic Control Devices for Works on Roads and
Temporary Traffic Management)

Most warning signs are triangular and have a red border surrounding a black symbol
on a white background. The symbols give a pictorial indication of the likely hazard. In
certain cases, rectangular supplementary plates may be added to provide additional
information.

All warning signs shall be fully reflectorized, otherwise either internally or externally
illuminated. In cases where sign illumination is required, internal illumination is
preferable to external illumination.

3.2 Sign Sizes and Siting Requirements

Warning signs are available in five sizes, with the size and required visibility distance
being dependent on the 85th percentile approach speed.

VOLUME 1 PAGE 37
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

Warning signs must be a size that is appropriate to the prevailing traffic speed on the
roadway on which they are to be used.

On low speed roadways, such as minor collectors or local roadways, with a posted
speed of 50 kph or less, the smallest prescribed size of warning triangle (normally 600
mm high) is usually adequate.

On arterials where speeds are generally higher, warning signs need to be larger. The
largest warning signs are required for expressways and freeways.

The required sign dimensions, siting distance, and clear visibility distances are in
Table 3.1.

considerations or physical restrictions apply. Reference must be made to the Overseeing
Organization prior to the specification of a 1500 mm sign, as its use implies that certain other
measures (e.g., to reduce vehicle speed) may be required.
2. Slender obstructions such as traffic signal posts and lamp columns may be ignored.
3. “aleph–height” is defined as the height of the size of Arabic letter “aleph”. “x-height” is defined
as the height of a lower case Latin letter “x”.

3.3 Sign Mounting

Guidance on the lateral and vertical positions of warning signs is in Part 1, General
Information and Index of Signs, Chapter 1, Section 1.8.13 (Table 1.3 and Figure 1.4).

3.4 Placement of Warning Signs

Warning signs should normally be placed on the right side of the roadway. However,
in some circumstances, site conditions may make this impractical. A warning sign may
be placed on the left side of a left bend if the sign would otherwise be hidden from
view, or there is insufficient room for the sign on the right side of the roadway.

Sometimes, it is appropriate to duplicate warning signs by erecting them on both

sides of the roadway, this is known as a gateway. The use of duplicate warning signs
would be appropriate at the end of a divided roadway, or on the approaches to a
roundabout on a high-speed roadway.

3.5 Priority Intersections

3.5.1 Control Ahead
Sign W100 warns of an intersection ahead
controlled by sign R100 (STOP).

3.5.2 Side Roadways Ahead

Signs W102 to W106 warn drivers on a major
roadway of an intersection ahead and indicate
both the layout of the intersection and the
priority route through it. These signs appear
only on the priority route (indicated by the
wider route symbol) and may only be provided
when all of the following conditions apply:
W102
• There are no map-type advance
directional guide signs.
• The intersection is not controlled by
traffic signals.
• There are no STOP or GIVE WAY signs or
W103-L/R roadway markings on the priority route,
or a combination thereof.
• Roadway markings cannot adequately
convey the information to the driver.

For signs W102 and W106, the wider route

symbol must not indicate that a priority route
is crossing ahead. The STOP sign (R100) or
W104-L/R GIVE WAY sign (R101) should be used in these
circumstances.

Signs W103, W104 and W105 may have their

symbols reversed where necessary.

Sign W104 may only be used where the

distance between intersections is less than
W105-L/R that given in Table 3.6. Otherwise, two sign
W103’s should be used.

Sign W105 warns drivers that the side roadway

shown on the sign is not available to through
traffic.

Intersection warning signs are not normally

W106
provided on minor roadways.

Signs W102 to W106 inclusive should be

located on the right side of the roadway at a
distance from an intersection, as specified in
Table 3.1.

Where the distance between two successive intersections is such that the siting
requirement of Table 3.6 cannot be met, the sign warning of the second intersection
should be installed immediately beyond the first, so that the minimum clear visibility
distance is achieved.

Where an intersection warning sign has to be placed further in advance of the

intersection than recommended, it may be supplemented by Plate P212 (distance).

Sign W107 “Reduction in speed necessary

for a change in roadway layout ahead” may
be used as a supplementary plate to
intersection warning signs on high-speed
roadways, as directed by the Overseeing
W107
Organization.

3.5.3 Roundabouts
Sign W108 is used together with countdown
marker plates W109 to W111, to warn drivers
of their approach to a roundabout.

Sign W108 “Roundabout ahead” should be

located on the right side of the roadway at a
distance from a roundabout, as specified in
W108
Table 3.1.

PAGE 44 VOLUME 1
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

Countdown markers approaching

roundabouts are only normally required on
high-speed approaches on divided roadways.
They may also be used on roadways if the
clear visibility distance is less than those
values shown in Table 3.5.

These countdown marker signs are mounted

W109-R W110-R W111-R in pairs on both sides of the roadway at 300
m, 200m, and 100 m in advance of road
marking M203 (GIVE WAY).

For roundabouts on minor urban arterials and

rural arterials, the color of the countdown
markers should be green with white stripes.

Countdown markers W109-L, W110-L, and

W111-L are located on the central median of
the roadway with the bars inclining
downward to the right. Countdown markers
W109-L W110-L W111-L W109-R, W110-R, and W111-R are located on
the right side of the roadway.

Guidance on the wider use of intersection

countdown marker signs is given in Part 4:
Guide Signs.

Sign W107 (REDUCE SPEED NOW) may be

used in conjunction with sign W108 and
countdown marker plates W109 to W111
where it is considered that these warning
signs may not result in a sufficient reduction
in speed to enable drivers to negotiate the
hazard safely.

VOLUME 1 PAGE 45

GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

3.5.4 U-turn Ahead

Sign W112 provides advance warning of a U-
turn at an intersection or at a nonintersection
such as opening in the median designed for U-
turns.

Sign W112 should be located on the median

island of a divided roadway on the left side of
W112 the roadway at a distance from the
intersection or median opening as specified in
Table 3.1.

“U-turn ahead” signs should not be provided in

situations where the availability of a U-turn is
apparent or can be accurately anticipated by a
driver (e.g., in advance of a signalized
intersection). No U-turn ahead signs should be
provided in advance of a signalized
intersection.

3.5.5 Merging Traffic

Signs W113 and W114 are used before
intersections where two streams of traffic,
travelling in the same direction and of equal
priority, merge (e.g., at a slip ramp joining a
main roadway).

They may not be used where one of the joining

W113-R
streams has priority over the other.

Sign W113-R is located on the main roadway

to warn of traffic joining from the right.

Signs W113 and W114 may have their symbols

reversed.
W114-L
Sign W114-L is located on the minor roadway
to warn traffic that it is merging onto the
major route. Both signs are provided on each
side of the roadway.

PAGE 46 VOLUME 1
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

3.6 Deviation of Route

3.6.1 Single Bend
Sign W200-L is used to give advance warning
of a sharp bend. Where the bend is to the
right, the symbol is reversed.

It is not possible to define exactly the

conditions under which this sign should be
W200-L used, as the degree of hazard that a bend
presents depends on a number of variables.

However, on divided roadways where the 85th

percentile speed exceeds 80 kph, sign W200
should be provided in advance of any bend of
radius less than 400 m.

This sign should be installed on both sides of

the roadway at a distance from a sharp bend,
as specified in Table 3.1.

Elsewhere, each site must be individually

assessed in terms of bend radius, approach
speed, visibility, superelevation, and surface
skid resistance, with the sign provided only
where it is concluded that the driver would
find difficulty in negotiating the bend without
significantly reducing his speed.

Additional information may be provided by the

use of sign W107 “REDUCE SPEED NOW” or
the supplementary plate P306 “maximum
posted speed.”

If sign W107 or sign P306 are used, they

should be mounted directly below sign W200.

3.6.2 Intersection on a Bend Ahead

Sign W201-R should be used at intersections
that occur on sharp bends. Sign W201 avoids
the use of separate signs. Where the bend is to
the left, the symbol is reversed.

3.6.4 Multiple Chevron Signs

Sign W300 is used in the following situations:

1. At a sharp curve in the roadway where sign

W200 (single bend) would not adequately
W300-R convey to the motorist the severity of the
bend. In this case sign(s) W300 should be
positioned as shown in Figure 3.1 with the
centerline of the sign aligned with the
centerline of the lane or roadway of the
oncoming traffic.
W300-R (variant)
2. If the angle of the curve exceeds 90 degrees,
more than one sign may be used.

3. At sharp curves, the color of the chevron

sign should be red and white.

4. Sign W300 should be reversed for left

curves.

5. At roundabouts, sign W300 should be

mounted on the central island opposite each
approach as shown in Figure 3.2.

6. If a roundabout approach has three or more

lanes, the sign width should be increased to
incorporate four (or more) chevrons.

7. At T-intersections where the roadway turns

through 90 degrees.

8. At roundabouts and the top of

T-intersections, the color of the chevron sign
should be blue and white.

3.6.5 Single Chevron Sign

Sign W301 warns drivers of the actual position
of physical objects, or the actual alignment of
the roadway – when these conditions
represent hazards or potential hazards.
W301-L/R
When chevron sign W301 is used
independently, it should be placed as close as
possible to the hazard it is intended to mark.

Sign W301 may be mounted to point to the left

or to the right. The arrow should always point
toward the roadway passing in front of the
sign.

A pair of signs W301 should be considered for

use in place of sign R109 (pass either side) to
mark the gore of traffic islands if these features
are on a particularly difficult vertical or
horizontal alignment.

Sign W301 may also be used in sets so that the

signs are spaced at regular intervals to define a
sharp curve (i.e., right curve or left curve), the
edge of a high embankment or the guardrail at
the top of an embankment.

Examples of the use of the chevron sign W301

can be found in Figure 3.3.

spanning the roadway, where the clearance of that
structure is less than 5.7 m.

The sign is located before the structure but may

W404 also be mounted on the structure itself to
emphasize the warning.

The figure quoted on the sign must be at least

100 mm less than the measured minimum
clearance, to allow a margin for driver error, and
should be expressed to the next lowest multiple of
100 mm.

Wherever possible, an alternative route for

vehicles exceeding the stated height should be
indicated in advance of the intersection prior to the
structure.

3.8.8 Traffic Signals Ahead

Sign W405 should be used to warn drivers of their
approach to any traffic signal control whether
permanent or temporary.

Sign W405 should only be considered for use when

the signalized intersection is remote, isolated from

3.14 Hazard Warning Markers

Sign W440 is used where a bridge parapet or
other obstruction is adjacent to a traffic lane.

Sign W440 should be located on both sides of

the roadway.

If the obstruction is accompanied by a

narrowing of the roadway, signs W203 or
W440 W204 should also be used.

3.15 Hazard Identification Beacons

Hazard identification beacons are traffic signals giving a flashing amber light
indication. The beacon should only be used to supplement an appropriate warning
sign.

Hazard identification beacons can be used to:

• Warn of obstructions in, or immediately adjacent to, the roadway

• Call attention to, and increase the effectiveness of warning signs
• Provide warning for pedestrian crossings, especially those not at intersections
• Warn of intersections, especially where crashes have been recorded

Hazard identification beacons should be operated only during the hours when the
hazard exists.

A hazard identification beacon should be supplemented with a suitable sign when

used for a roadway obstruction and the area of the obstruction should be illuminated.

4 Speed Control
4.1 General
This section describes the traffic control devices required for the regulatory control of
traffic speed.

4.2 Objectives of Speed Management

The prime objective of speed management, by providing a system of posted speeds, is
to contribute to road safety on public roadways.

Posted speeds should be set to encourage (wherever practical) a uniform speed of

travel to reduce potential conflicts due to speed differentials between vehicles.

4.3 Types of Posted Speed

There are a number of different categories of speed zone:

• Linear speed zone: This is applied to a length of roadway with appropriate prime
posted speed signs at both ends of the zone and repeater posted speed signs
within the zone.
• Area speed zone: This is applied to a network of roadways within a defined area
with appropriate posted speed signs at both ends of the zone and repeater posted
speed signs within the zone.
• School zone: Where a posted speed is associated with a school area.
• Shared zone: Where a posted speed applied to an area or length of street shared
by both vehicles and pedestrians.

The posted speed of a school zone is usually lower than the default posted speed that
would otherwise normally apply.

Temporary posted speeds at road works are described in Part 9: Traffic Control
Devices for Works on Roads/Temporary Traffic Control.

4.4 Gateway Signing

Gateways can highlight a change in posted speed, particularly in urban areas. At the
entrance to a gateway, appropriately sized posted speed signs are located on each
side of the roadway to indicate the position where the transition in speed occurs.

VOLUME 1 PAGE 69
VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

For example, gateways can be used on the entrances to local area traffic management
projects (See Chapter 3, Section 3.5.5 of Part 3: Signs Related to Specific Types of
Roads and Road User).

4.5 Sign Sizes

The sign size identifier for posted speed signs is in Table 4.1.

4.6 Posted Speed Signs

4.6.1 Maximum Posted Speed
Sign R148 indicates the posted speed in kph for the
roadway on which the sign is located. This sign
should be positioned on both sides of the roadway
at each point where the posted speed changes.

Prime (terminal) signs are used to indicate the

beginning of maximum-posted speeds. The size of
R148 prime signs can be found in Table 4.4.

Repeater signs are placed at regular intervals

throughout the length of a speed zone to remind
drivers of the maximum-posted speed within the
zone.

On divided roadways, repeater signs must be

visible for traffic travelling in all lanes, so these
signs should be placed on both sides of the
roadway.

It is not essential for repeater signs to be placed

directly opposite each other. It may be
advantageous to stagger repeater signs on
alternative sides of the roadway with a regular
spacing of 5 km between repeater signs on the
same side of the roadway, so repeaters should be
2.5 km apart on opposite sides of the roadway
(Figure 4.2).

On long routes (i.e., those over 5 km), repeater

signs may be provided but their size should be

4.6.2 Minimum Posted Speed

Sign R149 is used to indicate a minimum
posted speed and notifies drivers to travel at
not less than the minimum speed.

Minimum posted speeds are not commonly

used, as it can be difficult to define the
minimum speed expected from vehicles in
R149 free-flow conditions. It may be appropriate to
set a minimum posted speed on roadways
where slow moving vehicles would
significantly reduce roadway capacity, or
increase congestion.

This sign should be installed at each point

where traffic becomes subject to the posted
speed displayed and may be repeated over the
length of the restriction.

The size of the prime minimum posted speed

sign can be found in Table 4.4.

Repeater signs should be smaller than the

prime sign, as detailed in Table 4.5.

Plate P213 is used to supplement sign R149 at

each point where traffic becomes subject to
the minimum posted speed.

P213
Sign R150 together with supplementary plate
P214, should be erected at the point where
the restriction ends.

These signs are provided on both sides of the

roadway.

and R150, when the restriction applies only to
trucks.

4.6.3 Truck Posted Speeds

National posted speeds are posted on all roadways for the lightest class of vehicles
(i.e., cars). Trucks are restricted to speeds lower than that normally posted in
accordance with the applicable national law. These lower posted speeds for trucks
shall not normally be individually signed. Where trucks need to be restricted to an
even lower speed on a particular roadway or length of roadway, while general traffic
would still be subjected to the higher speed posted speed, the difference in truck and
light traffic posted speed would need to be covered by the use of an additional single
posted speed sign.

An appropriate posted speed sign, described below, would therefore need to be used
as a supplementary indication on those lengths of roadway only in those limited
instances where the difference in required speed for trucks compared with general
traffic is different to that which would normally be required under the national law,
and indicated by a single posted value.

Sign R151 should be used to indicate a

maximum posted speed applicable to trucks

Sign R151 should be located on the right side

of the roadway.

On roadways where a posted speed for trucks

applies, sign R151 should be located at the
start of the speed restriction.
R151
Repeaters for sign R151 should be provided
every 500 m for a roadway with a posted
speed up to 50 kph and every 1 km for a
posted speed over 80 kph.

PAGE 74 VOLUME 1
VOLUME 1 PART 2

4.6.4 Rural Threshold Treatment Posted Speeds

Sign R152 is used to indicate the maximum-
posted speed at the point of transition
between a rural and an urban environment.

Sign R152 is used in conjunction with the

central road marking M110, which visually
narrows the roadway and encourages vehicles
to reduce speed. The posted speed roundel
marking M600 may also be used in
conjunction with sign R152.
R152
Sign R152 should be located on both sides of
the roadway at the transition point from a
rural to an urban environment.

4.6.5 Posted Speed Signs for School Zones

Guidance on the use of posted speed signs for school zones can be found in
Chapter 4, Section 4.3.5, Part 3: Signs Relating to Specific Types of Roads and Road
User.

4.6.6 Posted Speed Signs for Pedestrian Zones

Guidance on the use of posted speed signs for pedestrian zones can be found in
Chapter, 1 Section 1.6.2 of Part 3: Signs Relating to Specific Types of Roads and Road
User.

4.7 Variable Posted Speeds

Changes in external factors, such as weather conditions and periodic increases or
decreases in traffic volume may necessitate the need for changes to the maximum-
posted speed, which can be facilitated by variable message posted speed signs.

Variable message signs shall display maximum-posted speeds as follows:

• A legend that is identical in design and color to Sign R148

• A legend that is identical in design and color to Sign R148 but has illuminated
white numerals within an illuminated red roundel on a black background as shown
in Figure 4.1.

4.8 Speed Cameras

Sign G133 informs drivers of the presence of
speed cameras ahead.

Sign G133 should be located on both sides of the

roadway on all approaches to a section of
roadway where traffic speed is enforced by
speed cameras, at a distance given in Section 2.5
G133 Table 2.1.

Sign G134 is used where the average speed

cameras enforce traffic speed on a section of
roadway.

Repeater signs should be located on the right

side of the roadway at a spacing of every 5 km.
At the end of the roadway where posted speeds
G134 are enforced by speed cameras, sign G133 or sign
G134 should be located on both sides of the
roadway. These signs should be accompanied by
supplementary plate sign P208 “End.”

The size of sign G133 and sign G134 should either

be 750 mm, 900 mm, or 1200 m with the
smallest size of sign being used on roadways with
a posted speed of up to 50 kph and largest sign
being used on roadways with a posted speed of
P208 over 80 kph.

5 Parking
5.1 General
An on-street parking place is that part of the roadway set aside for stationary vehicles.
This parking place may be an uncontrolled parking area at the side of the main
roadway, or it may be part of a roadway imposed by controls.

Signs are specified in this section for areas of the roadway:

• Which are available or reserved for parking.

• Where parking is restricted or prohibited.
• Where stopping is restricted or prohibited.
• This may be on either a part time or full time basis by means of either a linear (i.e.,
a section of roadway) or area parking control.

5.2 Legal
Drivers should be aware that there may be legal standing behind parking restrictions.

5.3 Sign Sizes

Size identifiers are not appropriate for parking signs due to the unique sizes of these
particular signs. Details of the sizes of parking signs and their supplementary plates
can be found on the relevant working drawings contained within Volume 3: Technical
Drawings.

The list of all parking signs and supplementary plates contained within this section are
in Table 5.1.

Most parking signs are prescribed an x-height of either 20 mm or 40 mm. The

appropriate x-height for such signs is determined by the need to ensure the sign is
conspicuous rather than being determined by the speed of approaching traffic.
Therefore, the smaller 20 mm x-heights are more appropriate for parking signs
displaying larger amounts of information.

5.4 General Parking Places without Time Limit

Sign G100 should be used to indicate a parking place for
vehicles whether it be on-street parking bays or off-
street parking places. The plate may be extended to
include the distance or a direction arrow below the text.

Alternatively, this symbol may be incorporated in

directional guide signing, as described in Chapter 3,
G100
Section 3.4.4 of Part 4: Guide Signs.

Where sign G100 (plus supplementary plates P400 or

P401 to P403 inclusive) is used at on-street parking bays,
it should be located at each end of a row of parking bays
with the sign face parallel to the curb line or edge of
roadway.

direction to the nearest parking machine. If this
sign is located between two parking machines, a
R203
second arrow pointing in the opposite direction
should be added to the sign.

When sign R203 is sited close to the ticket machine,

the directional arrow is removed.

The sign should be shown in both Arabic and

English text.

Pay and display sign R203 should be installed at

each end of a row of parking bays served by a “PAY-
AND-DISPLAY” payment point, with the sign face
parallel to the curb line or edge of roadway.

5.8 Shared Use Parking

Shared use parking signs are prescribed for permit parking bays that may be used for
other vehicles either at the same time or at other specified times.

Sign R204, in combination with sign G100, should

be used where there is time limited parking. The
example shown here is time limited parking Sunday
to Thursday from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm for permit
holders only and 20 minute parking for non-permit
holders with no return for 40 minutes.

6.5 Traffic Control at Roundabouts

Traffic control shall be by the use of the roundabout warning sign with the countdown
markers (see Section 3.5.3) on the immediate approaches to a roundabout.

The “REDUCE SPEED NOW” sign W107, see Section 7.4.2, may be used in conjunction
with the “Roundabout” sign W108 where it is considered that a warning sign and

PAGE 86 VOLUME 1
VOLUME 1 PART 2

countdown markers alone might not result in a sufficient reduction in speed to

negotiate the roundabout safely. The “REDUCE SPEED NOW” sign W107 would
normally be mounted directly below the “Roundabout” warning sign W108 and above
the respective countdown marker (signs W109 – W111).

A “GIVE WAY” sign R101 (see Section 2.8.2) should be used on each approach to a
roundabout and should be located on the right side of the roadway for single
roadways and on both sides of the roadway for divided roadways.

“Roadway Diverges” sign R106 should be used on the median strip at roundabouts, or
at each roundabout exit. Guidance on the use of this sign can be found in
Section 2.9.4.

Guidance on the use of multiple chevron signs R300 at roundabouts can be found in
Section 3.6.4.

For compact roundabouts, the compact roundabout sign R103 should be used to
supplement the GIVE WAY sign R101, which is located on each arm of the compact
roundabout. Guidance on the use of the compact roundabout sign is given in
Section 2.9.1. Signs W107 and W109 to W111 are not be used for compact
roundabouts.

6.6 Signalized Intersections

Guidance on the use of warning sign W405 “Traffic Signals Ahead,” including the
visibility distance criteria, is described in Section 3.8.8.

When used on a divided roadway, warning sign W405 should be duplicated on the
median.

Where a signalized intersection occurs with a One-Way roadway, regulatory “No left
turn” sign R115-L and “No right-turn sign” R115-R are required on the appropriate
approach arms of the conventional bi-directional roadway. In addition, a “No Entry”
sign R117 is required at the entrance of the one-way roadway.

6.7 Hazard Markers

At roundabouts, multiple chevron board sign W300 should be mounted on the central
island opposite each approach to the roundabout (see Section 3.6.4).

8 Auxiliary Lanes
8.1 General
Auxiliary lanes comprise slow vehicle lanes, overtaking lanes, turnouts, and traffic
lanes in merges provided on roadways.

• Slow vehicle lanes: these can be provided on roadways to allow for trucks and
other slower moving vehicles.
• Overtaking lanes: these can be provided on multi-lane roadways to allow traffic to
overtake slower moving vehicles.
• Turnouts: these can be provided on low speed roadways, typically with an 85th
percentile speed of 60 kph or less, in situations where it is not possible to provide
a slow vehicle lane or an overtaking lane, to allow traffic to overtake slower
moving vehicles.
• Traffic lanes in merges: these can be provided to allow drivers merging on high-
speed roadways to match their speed with those on the main roadway. These can
also be provided on lower speed roadways with a posted speed of 80 kph or less.
An auxiliary lane should be extended in cases where it is expected that the
capacity of the connector roadway and the main roadway should be frequently
carrying traffic flow approaching their design capacity.

8.2 Sign Sizes

The size identifiers for auxiliary lane signs are in Table 8.1.

Turnouts
8.3.1 Signs for Slow Vehicle Lanes
Signs G104 and G105 inform drivers that
there is a lane specifically for slow
vehicles ahead.

If an extra slow vehicle lane is provided

for trucks, or for other slow moving
vehicles, signs G104 and G105 should be
G104 installed before the slow vehicle lane.

Sign G104 should be placed on the right

side of the roadway approximately 100 m
before the slow vehicle lane.

Sign G105 should be used where it is

desirable to give advance warning of a
slow vehicle lane at a greater distance.

Signs G104 and G105 should be shown in

both Arabic and English text.

8.3.2 Signs for Overtaking Lanes

Signs G106 and G107 are used to inform
drivers that there is an overtaking lane
ahead at the distance specified on these
particular signs.

Sign G106 may give advance warning of

an overtaking lane. This sign should be
placed on the right side of the roadway
G106 approximately 300 m in advance of the
taper providing the extra lane.

Where it is desirable to give the advance

warning of an overtaking lane at a greater
distance, the sign’s legend may vary to “1
km ahead” (G106). The distance shown on
sign G107 may be varied.

Signs G109 and G107 should be shown in

G107 both Arabic and English text.

8.3.3 Signs for Turnouts

Signs G108, G109, and G110 are used to
inform drivers of the presence of a slow
vehicle turnout.

Signs G108 and G109 should be installed

on the right side of the roadway at a
distance up to 300 m in advance of and at
G108 the beginning of a turnout.

Sign G110 may be used to give advance

warning of a series of turnouts.

Sign G110 should be located on the right

side of the roadway.

Sign G111 should be used for extended
auxiliary merges.

Sign G111 should be located on both the

right and left sides of the roadway.

An example of the typical use of sign G111

for an auxiliary lane merge is shown in
G111 Figure 8.1.

A supplementary distance plate should be

added to the sign, placed 185 m from the
start of the lane closure taper.

For very long auxiliary merges, consider

additional signs with the appropriate distance
plates.

9 Toll Roadways
9.1 General
Toll roadways are typically limited-access freeway or expressway facilities, but might
also be a conventional roadway. A portion of or an entire route might be a toll
roadway. Alternatively, a bridge, tunnel, or other crossing point might be the only toll
portion of a roadway.

The general signing requirements for toll roadways should depend on the type of
facility and access (i.e., freeway, expressway, or conventional roadway).

9.2 Sign Sizes

The size identifiers for other toll roadway signs are shown in Table 9.1.

9.3 Regulatory Signs for Toll Plazas

Regulatory signs applicable only to a particular lane or lanes should be located in a
position that makes their applicability clear to roadway users approaching the toll
plaza.

VOLUME 1 PAGE 105

VOLUME 1 PART 2
GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

Regulatory signs or regulatory panels within directional guide signs, indicating

restrictions on vehicle type and on the forms of toll payment accepted at a specific
toll plaza lane should be installed over the applicable lane. These signs should be
installed either on the toll plaza canopy, or on a separate structure immediately in
advance of the canopy located such that each sign is clearly related to an individual
toll lane.

9.3.1 Posted Speed Signs

One or more posted speed signs R148 should be installed in Electronic Toll Collection
only lanes at toll plazas. This enables an enforceable posted speed to be established
only for those traffic lanes where it is intended that vehicles moving through the plaza
do not stop.

The posted speed displayed on these signs should be based on a study taking into
account the geometry of the toll plaza and the lanes and other appropriate safety and
operational factors.

A posted speed sign R148 should not be installed for a toll plaza lane that is controlled
by a STOP sign R100 (see Section 2.8.1) or where a stop is required.

Posted speed signs may optionally be installed over the applicable lane on the toll
plaza canopy, on the approach end of the tollbooth island, on the tollbooth itself, or
on a vertical element of the canopy structure.

9.3.2 STOP Signs

A STOP sign R100 should not be installed for a toll plaza lane that is operated as an
Electronic Toll Collection only lane and is designed for tolls to be collected while
vehicles continue moving.

If required, a STOP sign R100 for a toll plaza cash payment lane should be located in a
longitudinal position as near as practically possible to the point where a vehicle is
expected to stop to pay the toll, or take a ticket.

GENERAL ROAD SIGNS

9.3.3 Toll Rate Signs

Sign G112 may be installed in advance of the
toll plaza to indicate the toll applicable to the
various vehicle types.

This sign should not contain more than three

lines of legend (excluding the word “TOLL”).

G112 should be located on the right side of

G112 the roadway between the toll plaza and the
first advance sign informing road users of the
toll plaza.

The payment amounts should be shown in

both Arabic and English.

9.4 Pay Toll Advance Warning Signs

Sign W430 should be installed overhead at
approximately 1.6 km and 800 m in advance of
mainline toll plazas at which some or all lanes
are required to come to a stop to pay a toll.
This sign should be shown in Arabic and English
text.

An additional Pay Toll advance warning may be

W430 installed approximately 3.2 km in advance of a
mainline toll plaza and this warning sign may
be installed overhead or post mounted.

Sign W431 should be installed overhead

downstream from the Pay Toll sign W431 that
is 800 m in advance of a mainline toll plaza
where some or all of the lanes are required to
come to a stop to pay a toll.

The location of the overhead sign should

W431 coincide with the approximate location where
the mainline lanes begin to widen on the
approach to the toll plaza lanes.

This sign should be shown in Arabic and English

text.
