1.1 General
The safe movement, control, and protection of pedestrians can be facilitated through
infrastructure provision, (for example, dedicated roadway crossing points, barriers,
and refuges) and by warning and information signs that provide driver and pedestrian
information. There are a number of general considerations regarding the provision of
signs:
• The facility should be appropriate to the levels of expected usage and potential
pedestrian/roadway traffic conflict.
• The facility should make provisions for people with disabilities, the elderly, and
children.
• Where possible, street design and signage should follow consistent conventions
for driver and pedestrian understanding.

Warning, information, and directional guide signs are provided for both drivers and
pedestrians about the pedestrian facilities
Advice on the appropriate type and the design requirements of pedestrian facilities is
provided in the QHDM.
The following sections provide the requirements of the signage that must, should, or
may be used.

Supplementary plate P206 is used to exempt
certain categories of vehicles (e.g. buses,
buses, and taxis, except for access to a
pedestrian zone).

Sign R134 “no bikes” must be used at the
entrance to a pedestrian zone where it is
required to prevent bikes travelling in the
zone. Further guidance on the use of sign R134
is in Chapter 2, Section 2.10.17 of Part 2:

4 School Zones
4.1 General
This section provides the signage requirements for school zones. Guidance is provided
on the use of signs for child crossings, school buses, school posted speed zone, and no
stopping outside schools during designated times.
To identify that the appropriate signs are located on the approaches to, or within a
school zone, all regulatory and warning signs must be contained within a rectangular
backing board covered with fluorescent yellow–green retroreflective sheeting and the
reflective backing board sheeting should be surrounded by a black border (Figure 4.1).

during peak travel periods only, or during special events.
Specific signs for HOV lanes include signs informing drivers of the approach of an HOV
lane (these signs may include time restriction information), signs within the HOV lane
(including time restriction information where applicable), and signs marking the
location of end of an HOV lane.

Intersections with heavy traffic flows, or with restricted visibility, should be controlled
by traffic signals, with special white signals for tramcars or LRT units.
At minor intersections with a roadway carrying a tramway or LRT line, the minor
roadway should have a GIVE WAY sign R101/P200 plus the appropriate tram/LRT
warning signs.

The load gauge shown in Figure 8.1 gives an audible warning when the maximum
height beneath an overhead, electrified power cable is exceeded.
Figure 8.1 Load Gauge Giving Audible Warning Below Electrified Overhead Cables
This device must always be used where the safe height is less than 5.03 m.
The load gauge should be mounted on two posts colored black and white in alternate
horizontal bands, each band being not less than 250 mm nor more than 335 mm deep.
Signs W421 and supplementary plate P311 should be used when a load gauge is
installed.

8.5.4 Flashing Traffic Light Signals for Tramway or LRT Line Crossings
Sign E100 (flashing red or amber traffic signal) is
located at the tramway or LRT line crossing.
The primary traffic signal should be located on
the right hand side of the roadway on each
approach roadway to the crossing.
E100
This signal should be located as close as possible
to the crossing.
At tramway or LRT line crossings where there are
barriers, this signal should be located no more
than 1 m before the barrier.
A secondary duplicate flashing traffic signal
should be located on the left side of the roadway
on each approach to the crossing.
Where it is not practical to use a normal post
mounting for this traffic signal, it may be
mounted over the roadway – providing that no
part of the traffic signal is less than 5.5 m above
the roadway surface.
The distance from which the flashing red or amber traffic signals should be seen by
approaching vehicles varies depending on the speed of the roadway. The
recommended minimum visibility distances are related to the 85th percentile speed of
approaching vehicles (Table 8.7).
