FORMS AND FUNCTIONS OF ARCHITECTURE

Architecture is the art and the science of building. Without consideration of

structural principles, materials, and social and economic requirements a building cannot
take form, but unless aesthetic quality also is inherent in its form the building cannot be
considered as a work of architecture.
From the very beginnings of architecture many skills, systems, and theories have been
evolved for the construction of the buildings that have housed nations and generations of
men in all their essential activities, and writing on architecture is almost as old as writing
itself. Books on the theory of architecture, on the art of building, and on the aesthetic
appearance of buildings exist in fair number. The oldest book we have that sets forth the
principles upon which buildings should be designed and aims to guide the architect is the
work of Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, written in the first century В. С
The historical background of twentieth-century architecture finds little place in this
article, but that does not imply a denial of the value of our cultural heritage. Such a re-
cognition of continuity does not imply repetition or imitation. Architecture is an art, its
contemporary expression must be creative and consequently new. The heritage of the past
cannot be ignored, but it must be expressed in contemporary terminology. The paradox of
the coexistence of change and survival is evident in all phases of the human story. The
philosophers, and historians have taken great pains to explain it. This paradox of change
and repetition is clearly illustrated in any architectural style.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE
CATEGORY RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE

The residents of this contemporary home approached us with some very specific
objectives. One of the most fun was they were going to be building the home themselves
and we were to help them navigate the world of construction. We became not only their
architects, but also their teachers, tool lenders and sometimes therapists.
The polished concrete floors run throughout the 1600 sq ft home. Each niche and
corner designed with specific function. The house has an open floor plan with a private
master suite. The master suite contains the master bath, bedroom and closet and is
contained in the smaller volume of the two. The larger volume houses the living room,
kitchen, guest suite, and mech/laundry room.
The exterior of the home is sheathed in corten panels, cypress siding and an accent
wall of bark panels that extends from the interior to the exterior at the entry foyer.

  The interior focused on clean lines and large windows to draw your eye out to the
view of the blue ridge park way that snakes it way along the mountains on the horizon.

Under Construction
 Hello everyone, just thought we’d update you on some of our projects. A lot is
happening currently, projects are either being permitted, just starting, or already under
construction. Here’s a look at some that are under construction.

Just getting started, the Toth Residence is a contemporary home atop horizon hill. The
home has a steel structure and an absolutely fantastic view.

Also just finishing up, the Monahan Residence was a formerly abandoned structure. We
modified the existing framework to create something new. Chris Kaselak at MA|CK
Constructors is the general contractor on this project.

 
The Yero Residence is a master suite addition to a home out in Mars Hill. Solid Rock is in the process of beginning
construction.

Copper Crown, a reference to the building’s metallic roof, will be a restaurant on Tunnel

Road located in HomeTrust Bank Plaza.
Some of our projects don’t have any pretty pictures yet, but we plan on getting some soon.
These projects are:

10 Bilt more, located in historic Biltmore Village, is above the Cantina restaurant. It was
an existing office space, but will be converted to two Apartments. Go forth Builders are in
charge of building the residential space.
Hi-Tech is a home electronic supplier which is moving into a new two story Morten pre-
engineered building. The space will serve as a show room and office storage for the
company.
Sandhill Baptist Church is building a new church that includes a fellowship hall, daycare,
and sanctuary.

FIRST TWO WEEKS

Hello, Employee!

Well today I just finished my second week as an actual employee at Form and Function
Architecture, and both weeks have been pretty eventful. Although the job does involve
getting stamped with the Form and Function Logo,

I did get to attend a meeting at the Julian F. Keith about fire codes and fencing issues.
Later that week I returned with Emili to measure window heights and finalize fencing
plans. I then had to put the measurements and plans onto the program Revit, which I have
been slowly adapting to.

I also got to use Revit with The Hop, so that they have the room to produce more ice
cream (YUM!).
                                                                                

Earlier today, I got to see the progress on The Smokey Park Supper Club, and
although the building has a ways to go, it still has to be one of the most unique restaurants
I have seen.

Also, there are several projects that are making serious headway. For example, Estes
is nearing completion for the addition of bathrooms in the PEP wing, Asia Wrap is nearing
completion as well, and Stf Precision broke ground this past week. The Flight in
Downtown Hendersonville is currently being renovated for a new restaurant,  Postero.

               

Two of our Residential Projects are also in their construction phases. Watch the
construction of the Toth Residence from Merrimon or 53 Roberts by one of my favorite
places, White Duck Taco.
   

YEAR IN REVIEW

It’s been a great year for us at Form & Function. We’ve had the opportunity to work on
some excellent projects, and we’ve added two new folks to our staff.
