АРТИКЛЬ

В українській мові немає граматичної категорії артикля, тому перекладач змушений передавати різні
функції артикля лексичними або синтаксичними засобами цієї мови. У тих випадках, коли артиклі, крім
своєї граматичної функції (маркера іменника), мають і смислове навантаження, виступаючи означенням,
вони перекладаються, як правило, прикметниками, відносними займенниками та іншими частинами
мови.

Неозначений артикль
У більшості випадків неозначений артикль, який виконує суто граматичну функцію, не
перекладається. Коли ж він має певне додаткове смислове навантаження, то перекладається наступними
способами:
1) числівником один (зокрема, коли неозначений артикль стоїть перед іменником, що позначає
одиницю виміру, марку приладу, вузла, деталі тощо, або перед назвами агентів фізичного, хімічного та
інших процесів, такими як молекула, атом і ін.):
✓ An excerpt from his book will give some indication of the approach followed in his own school and in
those that were founded under his influence. - Одного витягу з його книги буде достатньо, щоб дати
певне уявлення про підхід, що практикується його школою і школами, які виникли під його впливом.
✓ The reaction resulted into a complex molecule. - Внаслідок реакції утворилася одна складна
молекула.
2) невизначеними займенниками будь-який та якийсь, прикметниками певний, відомий, новий або
словами та висловами ще один, такий як, постать на кшталт тощо:
✓ It is just a form of coding. - Це просто певна форма кодування.
✓ He accepts a peace plan proposed by the international “contact group”. - Він погоджується з новим
мирним планом міжнародної “контактної групи”.
✓ I suspect that another Marie Curie, a Kepler, even a Roger Bacon would not be damaged by more help,
or by the availability of cooperative research facilities for those inclined to use them. - Здається, новій Марі
Кюрі, новому Кеплеру та навіть новому Роджеру Бекону не завадили б більша допомога у дослідженнях
або ж можливості спільного використання устаткування, якого вони потребують.
3) вказівними займенниками той, такий (насамперед коли іменник, до якого відноситься артикль,
має означення у формі підрядного речення):
✓ It is a world that by its very definition we hardly know how to describe. - Це такий світ, який за
визначенням нам важко зрозуміти і описати.
✓ This is a kind of answer that I reject. - Це така відповідь, якої я не сприймаю.

Означений артикль
Як і неозначений артикль, означений артикль у багатьох випадках безпосередньо не
перекладається, оскільки має суто структурно-граматичну функцію. Однак у деяких випадках значення
означеного артикля необхідно передавати у перекладі. Це робиться звичайно наступними способами:
1) займенниками цей, ось такий, таке, той, саме той (коли означений артикль має вказівну
функцію):
✓ The argument is unconvincing. - Цей аргумент непереконливий.
✓ Then the question arises. - Тоді виникає ось таке питання.
2) займенником всі (ці), зокрема, тоді, коли означений артикль вжито перед іменником або
символічним знаком у множині:
✓ This is true if the p's are complex. - Це правильно в тому випадку, коли всі p - комплексні.
✓ The many possibilities opened up by the solution were not availed of. - Не вдалося скористатися
всіма тими можливостями, які виникли завдяки такому вирішенню.
 Вправа 1. Визначте, чи має артикль додаткове смислове навантаження у наступних реченнях
та перекладіть їх, звертаючи увагу на способи передачі значень артикля:
a) 1. I cannot identify anyone. But I testify that a woman came out of that particular room at that particular
time.
2. On this particular morning he sat facing a new client, a Mr Reginald Wade.
3. “Unless I can get to a major competition” — a young American concert pianist said to me once, — “I
haven’t a hope of establishing myself here”.
4. He hadn’t answered the one letter she had written to him.
5. “She says that as I have my friends down here she doesn’t see why she shouldn’t have hers. She is asking
Sinclair Jordan”. — “Is he the one?”
6. I was beginning to mix with people of a kind, I’d never mixed with before.
7. I don’t believe he is a Newton, though he is undoubtedly an extremely talented physicist.
8. It was a very sharp and decisive Poirot who spoke now.
9. It was the David Rubin I knew very well, the American physicist.
10. Ivan Petrov, a Russian poet, wrote the words to this song.

b) 1. Insofar as there is a dominant belief in our society today, it is a belief in the magic of the marketplace.
2. A visit to the canopy of leaves puts familiar subjects in new perspectives and adds a few surprises.
3. They are, however, proud of the one who went to university in Colombo. Dambane Yunawardena, a
man of 30 with long black hair and fluid grace, returned here as a schoolteacher and plans to remain.
4. The text introduces students to different regions of the United States and acquaints them with the
