Chapter 1 : Learning
from home
As we all know, Malaysia’s government started to
enforce Movement Control Orders (MCO) on March 18,
2019 and, starting from that, all schools in Malaysia
have been closed. There are a lot of challenges and
impacts that I had to face as a student during MCO.
During the pandemic, as a student, I had to learn online using
many applications, such as Google Meet, Google Classroom,
Zoom Meeting, and more. It's because we all know that our
government has ordered the closure of all schools in Malaysia
to control the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic. So, it kind of
stresses me out because I don’t really know how to use them
and it takes a long time for me to learn how to use them. I
had to open and learn about it on Youtube to learn how to use
it. Sometimes, I feel frustrated, causing me to not do my
homework. Besides that, I missed a lot of lessons just because
I'm not smart enough to use this application. But now, I’m
grateful that I know how to use them, and it's very useful for
me to learn and study online.
Basically, when I had online classes, the most challenging thing that I
had to face was the slow internet connection. This thing happens
because of the very poor internet connection at my house and
limited internet data. When I opened the Google Meet for my online
classes, all I saw was a blank screen and the lagging voice of my
teacher. It made me fed up and I lost motivation to learn online. So,
the impact is that I was lagging behind in learning and I failed my
online examination, especially in additional mathematics subjects.
Sometimes, I had to find a place that had a better connection to sit
for my examination. I’m very thankful to my parents for always
motivating me to keep studying and learning. Besides that, the
government also provides a free SIM card, and it helps me a lot with
the limited internet data problem. The government has provided 40GB
of internet data to students in Malaysia. I'm quite amazed by the
fast action from the government because it's very useful for me as
a student.
After that, online learning makes it hard for me to
stay focused. Maybe it is because I felt too
comfortable at home and it made me feel sleepy
during online classes, especially when it comes to
historical subjects. I don't even understand the
lesson that has been taught by the teachers. But,
not all of the online classes are boring. Some of
them are very interesting. For example, my
teachers used creative instructional aids. For
example, they used presentation slides, Quiziz, and
Youtube videos to teach us. From here, we can
see that teachers also need to play an important
role in keeping the students engaged actively
during online classes. However, students also need
to cooperate in giving attention to what the
teachers teach.
Chapter 2 :
Learning at school
during pandemic
When the cases of COVID-19 were decreasing, all
candidates for the Malaysian Certificate of
Education (SPM) needed to learn face to-face at
school. I was relieved when the Ministry of
Education (MOE) announced this because I was
tired both mentally and physically from learning
online. But it's also hard for us because we need
to obey the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
ordered by the Ministry of Health (MOH), such as
wearing masks all the time, checking the
temperature of our bodies, self-distancing 1
metre and washing our hands frequently.
When the SPM was just around the corner, almost all of my classmates
were positive for COVID-19. The symptoms that I noticed are having a
bad cough, a fever, and tiredness. Even though they have been affected
by COVID-19, I'm very amazed because they always keep studying hard
and do their best to give their best for the SPM examination. But, I’m
grateful because I’m not affected by those viruses and I can sit for
my SPM exam until it ends. Thankfully, after all the hard work and
challenges of learning during the pandemic, I got excellent results in SPM.
I'm so happy because I have made my parents and school proud.
Starting from here, I stick to the words of Tony Gaskins, which says,
"Trust the process. Your time is coming. 'Just do the work and the
results will handle themselves.’
In conclusion, pandemics cause a lot of suffering,
especially for students. But, through online learning, we
can gain more experience and knowledge about the
technology that will be useful to us in the future.
Besides that, we need to always believe in ourselves
even though we have been through a lot of challenges
and believe that every cloud has a silver lining.
